2015 Mizuno TN-87

Usually scour ebay for a set of the originals. Saw an interesting listing and did a little quick research. Seems everyone on the site knows about the legendary TN-87s. Didn't see it on here so I thought I'd post it to let people know. Looks like Mizuno is releasing a 35 anniversary set.

JoeK can confirm that rare gap wedges did come with a few of the original sets.

I wonder how the new will be differentiated from the old. Afaik over here the local dealer might still have some. A bright mind might buy those to sell at a discounted $2,000 against the new price.

2k could be doable for this set...

I used to build long range rifles for all sorts of people, some people would ask for the craziest things like intricate engravings with gold inlay. 10 of thousands of dollars and they'd never shoot it. These irons, they'd be like that. Jewelry on sticks. Gorgeous.

Agreed! Bag chatter on these irons would make me cringe...

If I had the money I would definitely buy a set. Amazing irons!

Would you play them or display them?

I'd take them out to the range every once in awhile, and maybe even to the course once or twice a year, but I'd mostly just display them.

That is what is funny the wedges then where god awful shovels with a nasty reverse offset approach the japanese liked for wedges. In those days when you ordered beautiful forgings like some of the ones Bridgestone was making you got your set and they looked beautiful 3-9. But then you wondered what the hell happened and why did they ship a different model wedges with your beautiful set. Cured many of us from ordering Japanese forgings without first seeing the whole set. They made the Ping Eye 2 wedges look like zero offset 588 size wedges by comparison.. Horrible.. And to boot they are going to force you to buy another shovel that didn't exist in those days (AW)... All for $4,000....and a bag tag...

I have not hit a set of the original TN87's in years but from my recollection they felt brilliant - whether it was the copper underlay, the grind, or perception based on everyone chatting them up I couldn't say. For the price there are a few other clubs that I would rather try out, but I am sure that they will bring a smile to more than a few faces whether online, on the wall, or at the range.

Same here. What I'd probably do is shaft one iron, probably the 5 or something, and use it occasionally. Keep the others minty to look at. Purely hypothetical of course.

A gentleman I know at my range (I don't know him very well, but have talked irons with him in the past) asked me if I know what the Mizuno TN-87's are this am.

I said I've read about them.

He had a set in his car and brought them out for me to look at. They were a used set, but in great condition.

He said 'go ahead and hit them'. I was stunned (and a little bit afraid).

I hit half a dozen SW's. I normally play the 33's and wasn't expecting these to be any smoother...but, lo and behold they really were.

I hit one 3-iron and it too felt amazing.

He's selling the full set for $1000. I declined though. I'm not giving in to anymore ho'ing activity.
