Why do we talk about the '06 open how Tiger dismantled the place?? I always wondered this as he won by 2
It was estimated at the time by Tiger forgoing his Driver, it was as if we was playing an the course at 8500 yards.

He dismantled with strategy, long irons, and lag putting.

Reminds me of Tommy Armour's book "A Round of Golf with Tommy Armour". A quintessential read for all golfers, as 99% of them don't know how to think there way around a golf course. Great book, better than even Penicks Little Red Book.

8,500 yds? That's quite a number...

Wasn't that course absolutely baked to a crisp, allowing for seriously fast conditions?

That it was. Fairway shots were followed by plumes of dust and tee shots were running out 50 yards and more.

Interesting to see the pics of "most" of the players signing autographs, but not one of Tiger ?????? whats up with him, does he not do autographs.
Can't tell if you actually don't know or are just being sarcastic.
Well I wasn't been sarcastic, Tiger doesn't make many appearances over here so we don't see him like you guys. If he signs for the kids then fair enough, all the times I have seen him on TV (Golf Channel) it seems he cannot wait to get into the recorders hut and then away home.
I understand.

That is true. His personality isn't to stop and spend time signing his name. His inclination is to get out of the public eye ASAP. But at least he does sign some for the kids here and there.

He also had Hank Harney and Steve Williams helping him. Since he fired both of them he has had trouble in majors.

He only hit it once in four days, and he should not have hit the one on the 16th on the first day. He was going in with four irons and I think they calculated that he was playing an 8,500-yard golf course playing it that way. Seriously. So that was Tiger at his optimum. That was him in a Tiger Zen.

I believe what the calculation was is... the average player that week was using driver. They would hit driver and have 140 in, tiger would hit 4 iron and have 200 in. The calculation was... If Tiger we to have hit driver like the rest of the field up to his driver average... and still had 200 left... it's as if tallying all these up would have been an 8500 yard course. That's how far out he was playing approaches.

Trust me, I'm not knocking it. He put on both a course management and ball striking clinic that week.

To me, it just doesn't quite add up. He hit any number of irons off the tee. At worst, four iron which, I would imagine with all things being equal, is good for 220yds. With the calm conditions and forty to sixty yard roll out... Well, it certainly wasn't playing it's stated yardage. It's not as if every other participant was getting up to the tee pulling driver whenever possible. So if in fact it played longer for TW, it played longer for nearly everyone in the field.

Just a thought. Might be wrong. Still, impressive victory no matter how you slice it...

It's a 'stupid/for-fun' stat to begin with. Has no meaning really, but the phrase turns heads. Someone probably just found that the average player with 7 drivers per round for an average of 290 yards. Tiger possibly hit 4 iron in all those situations for an average of 230 (inflate 290 and 230 'typical' yardages by a good 20% because of the dry conditions that week... just using these numbers because they're easier to understand). So Tiger gave up 60 yards on those holes, 7 holes a round. 420 yards. Multiply that by his 4 rounds and he 'gave the field' 1620 yards (1680 minus 60 as he used his driver once the first day). The course was actually playing 7258 that year, but since Tiger 'gave up 1620 yards'... it's "as if we were playing a course 8878 yards".

Likely it was some sort of weird 'maths' used to calculate a meaningless/for-fun stat to try and hammer home the point that Tiger used strategy and course management to plot himself around the golf course.

This stat reminds me of the old Indian saying, “Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket.”
