I bought a WaterRower and it definitely has helped. I'm 51 years old and when I first started I could only do 8 minutes at a semi good pace. Now I'm up to 25 minutes. Eventually I would like to get to 45 minutes.

Driver: Cobra F7
Irons: Srixon 565's Steelfibers I95
3 Wood: Callaway Octane Tour 15*
Wedges:Wishon HM's SteelFiber i110
Hybrid: Cobra 20* Putter: Ping Craz-E
Bag: Sun Mountain C-130

Concept 2 rower is the standard erg used by all the universities, teams etc. It's a great piece of equipment that takes up very little space and cost is less than most other pieces of quality home workout equipment. About 950 vs 4K for an elliptical or high quality treatmill.

Aerobic exercise is not the best way to get in shape for golf though. You can do anaerobic intervals on a rower ......HIIT training if you will and that's hard to do on many other pieces of equipment. Those are better for golf.

I love the water rower over the other ones I have used (much smoother, which makes the pulling less stressful on my shoulders), I have one in my living room, and other than banging myself on it in the dark every now and then it's been great for the days where I don't want to run. I do intervals and just straight 5,000 meter to mix it up.

I would say its nether good nor bad. Its certainly good in that anything which improves your overall fitness, especially your core is a good thing but the golf swing is a twisting motion, so a rowing machine isnt really going to be that good for golf.
IMO, youd be better off doing planks, squats and other exercises that improve your overall core strength and balance. A rowing machine certainly isnt going to hurt though.

+1, I have had a Concept 2 rower for 7-8 years, very well made, and you can do a variety of workouts on it.

Was it of any benefit?

Big time. Last year I hit balls as hard as i could for 60-90 minutes, rapid fire. Then I did it for about 10-12 minutes hard core till I wanted to throw up.

I went from 130 to 135 and was able to maintain speed when I previously lost speed as the day progressed.

Need to get on that again to get my shoulder in shape.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

What was your routine?

I do anaerobic intervals on the rower and every now and then a longer aerrobic workout just to clear my head.

I've also been a kettelbell nut for years. Started with those 8 years ago. I can crack walnuts with my butt cheeks!

Not sure how much it's helped my swing though. Hasn't hurt that's for sure.

I've never rowed on any machine that wasn't a Concept 2.

I can't speak to that water rower, but the Concept 2 is just one of those products that you can't go wrong with. They have great online tracking tools. The software on the machines is good. You can buy replacement parts. They've been around forever. There are online forums where people talk about setting them up, technique, performance. . .all the geeky crap golfers talk about.

I don't actually have one, but I've used them at 3 or 4 different gyms and the last time I was working out a lot, I got into putting in my times online. It was something to chase, a ladder to move up.

any opinions on this?

Don't buy anything other than a concept 2. As a former college rower, I can't believe anyone would want to torture themselves this way, but it you're going to include rowing in your workout, there's only one machine worth using.

why buy. here's a video from a well known player also known for being in good physical form knowing what it takes. two for one in this video: keeping it low, and how to smack it long at whatever age with that part of the tape's demonstration starting @ 1:38.

I wish I had the space for a rower! They are great for cardio and a real pain in the a**. Would love one for the rainy days or when I want to get up and give myself an a** kicking but just don't want to leave the house.

Plus, what's better than watching golf while rowing? ;)

Or... penalize yourself for every three putt in a round. Each 3 putt is a 2k row or something like that. You'd really learn to not 3 putt quickly haha!

Due to some ankle issues this year, I switched to rowing for a lot of my cardio this year. I actually feel like I've gained about a club of distance since doing it, with one big caveat ...

Do NOT plan on playing golf after doing a rowing workout!

Tried it a few times, and my swing felt awful, and the ball went nowhere. Now I just make sure I don't do any type of rowing workout before I play.

How long had you been rowing? If you hadn't been rowing for long and tried to play the same day I can see your shoulders being burnt out. The first week I had my rower I tried to play the following day and I could tell my shoulders were shot. Once you strengthen those muscles a little more you should be able to do a light workout before playing.

I'm looking at investing in a rowing machine for the home to target on cardio fitness with golf in mind.

Would a rowing machine be a good exercise for golf? I've read that it targets 90% of the muscles in the body and is a good core workout including arms, chest, legs and back.

The full body motion of the rower/KB swing works a ton of golf-necessary-muscles - probably one of the most efficient movements in sports.

I used kettle bells (I do the very simple KB swing - up to 4 sets of 25...takes about 60 seconds per set...30 seconds to 1 minute of rest between sets. I also do simple and varied planks on alternate days...nothing too strenuous. I can "plank" for 60 seconds easily now. I liked the results of both of those exercises so much I also incorporated a rowing machine at the club....but even with the rower - there wasn't a whole lot more difference than just the KB and the planks.

KB is about $30-50 for 2 different weights; a Concept2 is a bit more. Both excellent. And remember to plank. Can almost guarantee 10+ more yards of carry with the driver, and 1 club more in distance with irons. Also remember to do speed work (I swing a gripped shaft (no head) with alternating arms). BOOOOM! :)

Golf and rowing require particular sequences of movement. In rowing, it's legs, to begin with, trailed by the middle and after that the arms. figuring out how to execute the rowing grouping reliably while expanding force will mean a solid, controlled golf swing. To do this activity, keep the hold and lower arms loose, and start rowing gradually.Every 10 minutes or somewhere in the vicinity, increment your power while keeping up the best possible succession of developments. There are some Best Rowing Machine Reviews, You can get more idea from here.

Just wanted to throw in one word of caution even though I'm a fan of rowing.

I found the rowing machine to really cause any slight soreness I had in my forearm to really flare up. There were times I'd get on the rowing machine not even realizing I was sore and didn't make it a full minute before my forearm would be killing me.
