Can any Mac experts please help me with info about this set I picked up from Teevons (Thanks Tim).

MacGregor Nicklaus N1 set of irons. Here are pictures from the front, back, and side. Looks and feels like a nice forged blade with diamonds framing the grooves. Simple Jack Nicklaus signature and "N1" stamped on the back.

I could not find any info in Kaplans. I know Jack's company called their irons "N1".

Maybe this was a transition set from MacGregor Golf to Nicklaus Golf.

Also, they kind of look like the MacGregor Limited Editions (at the bottom) Jack used to win the 1986 Masters - but I'm just guessing.

Thanks,

Isaac

Never have seen a set of those stamped with N-1 and Nicklaus on the back--- They look exactly like Muirfields or VIPs from the photos. Which the limited editions you pictured look like VIP/ Muirfields too. I know a couple of years the Muirfields had a little more rounded toe. Something else a lot of people do not know is that some Muirfields are cast--- The forged ones will have "Tour Forged" stamped on the back of the hosel. I have 2 sets of forged Muirfields and one cast set and believe it or not no 20th editions.

Thanks for your response Big Stu. Teevons mentioned that they could be from Japan. The only thing I don't like about them is the hard bright chrome finish. It seems like most of the MacGregor Nicklaus irons (SS1, VIP, Limited Edition, Muirfield, JNP) all had a satin-y finish.

Thanks again,

Isaac

IsaacK If you do not like the shiny finish and are going to play them soak them in white vinegar or Purple Power for a night. It will take the sheen off some. I know some will shudder at the thought but I for one can not stand the glare.

Powerbilt used B and C to denote their flexes, even if they were using Dynamic shafts. B was regular and C was stiff. Senior flex was A.

Didn't they even go A to E? I recall trying to look up the flex designations for Powerbilt shafts one time, and I read somewhere that there were 5 ranks.

But if C is stiff, then a putative "E" would have been rebar! Maybe there was a Ladies's flex in there as well.

Maybe the E was ladies. It would make sense that D would be X-stiff, with the ABCD progression. And sadly, ladies clubs are kind of an afterthought, in equipment history.

I'm not even sure I'm correct about the A-E designation. I was looking up Powerbilt irons and shaft flexes because I was looking at a set on an auction site and wanted to find out more about them. I found a site that mentioned the A-E flex designation, but I wouldn't take that as authoritative.

I’m getting very exasperated at this forum. How many times do you have to sign in to get on, where is the PM button . Anyone that’s been here a while can sure tell the difference I. The number of posts to almost any topic has dropped to nothing, and all topics seem to start back at the beginning. Small stuff but still a pain in the A.

The only topics that start at the beginning are those you haven't read since the switch to the new software. Once you read them, it will be back to normal. It's annoying, but it's better than the alternative, which is total implosion of the forums.

You can PM anyone by clicking on their profile. There's a "Message" button in the upper middle right, that's your PM button.

Content should pick up a bit more as time moves on. And, as the WRX staff and owners get things adapted to their preferences.

I finally took it to the range. I'll just say it would be great to have in the bag on a windy day and I'm a pretty high ball hitter for an am. Feels fine, but you have to put a good move on it to get it to stay in the air for more than 200 yds

I just took a old custom Mac driver that has an FM6.5 shaft to the range today. I liked it well enough and intend to use it in my next persimmon round, but I think 18 holes with driver with a 7.0 shaft would do my back in. Just even thinking about the 7.5 in yours makes my back ache.

I was hitting the Mac with the 6.5 shaft against a Mizuno persimmon driver with a DG S400. After the Brunswick 6.5 in the Mac, the S400 felt really soft in the tip. It played havoc with my timing. Then I went back to the Mac and was hitting it sweet. But it's at the limit of stiffness for me. Any more than that and I'd need a direct line to a chiropractor on the course.
