I like that Daiwa 3 wood too. Sold a bunch of those things back in their day.

Had the pleasure of picking a fellow classic club enthusiast and came away with some goodies.

First up, 1953 Spalding Top-Flite Synchro-Dyned iron set. In really nice shape. Some pretty good amount of pitting on some of the shafts but these have probably the nicest, most supple original leather grips on any classic set I’ve ever had.

Yep they are in darn good shape especially the grips are amazing. Yep the triangle tells it all 1953---- Back in my growing up days those were some of the "Holy Grail" iron sets between the hustlers and better players. I have seen them played with every shaft from stock to Hogan Apex.

I just saw a set of these yesterday when I was picking another collector and they caught my eye. The owner said they were very sought after and highly collectible during the classic club collecting boom. The insert is very cool. I should have maybe tried picking them up. Awesome clubs you have there!

Yup Stu. You and I have talked before about the 1953 Top-Flites and now I have a set. I took the 3,6, & 9 out to the range this morning and they are really wonderful clubs. I can see how these were popular back in the day.

Here is another set I picked up yesterday. 1955 Macgregor Byron Nelson Rec. 259. This set is really stunning. The head has a beautiful, compact shape that feels like a hammer when striking a ball flush. The shafts so almost no pitting and the original grips feel great. I believe the are the Park “All-Weather” grips.

I almost passed on this set and now I think it might be my favorite of all the sets I bought yesterday.

Yup - definitely H&B. Grand Slam is a Powerbilt model. Not sure what year it is as they used the Grand Slam name for a long time. I have a set of Grand Slam blades myself. The sweet spot is so small on those things I sometimes wonder if there even is one!

Three clubs that came in this week.

First, a Honma 2w with a carbon shaft. It's a little worn on the sole but very playable. Cost me all of 10 yen plus postage, which was actually quite a bit more than 10 yen. Came in at less than $20US. Hit yesterday on the course and licked* it.ds21p8nev7v1.jpg

*edit: I _liked_ it. I am not in the habit of licking or otherwise tasting my golf clubs.

Next, a couple of Ram wedges. I got the BeCu one because, well hey, BeCu! I think it will be a nice fit between my RAM Tour Grind PW and the RAM TW Custom grind wedge below. I played the BeCu one yesterday, and while it's OK, the offset takes some adjusting to. It does make it a good chipping club, though.

Next is a RAM TW Custom Grind SW, which I am going to bend to 57 or 58* if necessary. It looks like it might be there already. It has a DG R400 shaft, which I don't think I've ever hit before.

Nice stuff Catchy---- Notice the grooves on the TW Grind almost all the way ou to the toe----- Tom Watson knows and this was years before Callaway and TM. Of course I do not know if those preceeded the Eye2. And you know we talked aboiut offset in the Blades thread. That BECU would be Hosel City for me

Good catch on the grooves, Big_Stu, I hadn't noticed that. I've got a RAM Pro Tour Camber Sole set SW that is really similar to the one posted above. As far as I can tell, the only difference is the leading edge grind as the TW Custom grind is slightly straighter. But then I compared the grooves and they are indeed a bit longer on the TW custom grind SW (incidentally, I wonder if I convince any younger guys that the "TW" actually stands for Tiger Woods...).

As for the offset on the BeCu, yeah it's a bit more than I would like. With clubs with lots of offset, I tend to hit the ball a little fat. It's the same with my EYE2 L wedge, which is one reason it's so great out of bunkers.

LOL on this side of the tracks we know TW stands for Tom Watson without explanation . On another golf site one night I made mention of a JP Wilson wedge ( which I am fond of too) and someone asked when did James Patrick start working for Wilson? I had to explain in that case that JP stood for Joe Phillips the cheif designer at Wilson back in the day. Generation Gap

Oh, I haven’t left Macgregor completely. I still have a set of CB-92’s. I’ll probably always keep a set of those around as they were the 16 year old deejaid dream set. The Byron Nelson 259’s are in the bag though. They feel incredible and unlike most vintage sets where I lose a club and a half or two clubs in distance, I’m loosing maybe half a club with the 259’s. They might be a unicorn set.

Scrounging about the other day, found these Spalding Model 18 persimmons. D, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5. Regular flex (which is nice). Pristine spiral wrap leather grips. Near as I can tell, from about 1959. Pretty good shape considering. Started performing some sole plate buff up, fresh paint fill at some point, likely recoat this winter. For 2 bucks per (plus 50% "white tag" discount), they were affordable and thus required acquisition. Just because.

Don't know if I'll ever play them. Never hit a half wood before. The insert looked interesting. Plus I'm beginning to like the look of black wood woods.

Trust me hit them and you will like them. The 1/2 designation signified they were a little stronger than the standard woods at the time. I carried a 4 1/2 wood like yours for years and loved it and finally it cracked sometime in the late 80s. I carried that thing all through High School and my early mini tour days. I replaced it with a Persimmon H&B 4 wood that I still have today

I picked up this set of Wilson Staff woods last week with all the iron sets I got. These are a little harder to come by as they are persimmon not Stata-bloc. I believe them to be 1962 or 63.

I hit them for the first time this morning at the range and they flew very nice. I’m gonna take them out for a late 9 this afternoon.

Thanks SwingingK.

Took them out yesterday afternoon and on the first hole striped the driver about 245. Wow! I thought I was in for a great round driving the ball. Then the rest of the day I was hitting everything right and high. I think it has to do with my new driver set up my instructor has me trying as I am definitely not comfortable with it yet.

The 3 and 4 woods are lovely off the deck as I hit them wonderfully all round, didn’t even swing the 2-wood.

I’m going to keep them in the bag a bit as I think they work well once I get my driver tamed.

Geez, 245y out of the gate is pretty darn impressive. That driver must be a solid unit. Very nice. I'm not a Wilson expert but I'd think your about right on the age. I've got some late 50's persimmon Wilson's and they are a little different but quite similar. I'll post a pic for comparison when I get out to the garage.

I find it kind of weird that Wilson persimmons are seemingly so rare. They appear to be exactly the same as their much more available laminated maple brothers, just made of persimmon instead. Neat stuff!
