Yes sir, that's the real deal, not a reproduction. I had one at one time and the feel is really good. Great find!!!

If my memory serves me correctly and Wilson guys help me out here some of those putters came with that exact grip yours has. I think the leather wrap grips were an option or was it the other way around? But anyhow I am all for you replacing the grip and playing it. I have owned a few 8802s in the past and always seemed to like them better with leather wrap grips

One way to tell whether the 8802 or 8813 is first generation is that the Wilson cursive script has the S and O of Wilson connected. Reproductions are not connected. That was what I was told by former collectors 30 years ago.

Had a couple of big hitters on the team but they could not find a fairway. Had to do my thing and hit fairways which I did. Played the "Machogans" > Main thing I did not hurt my back. We finished "respectable" 10th out of 28 teams honestly. Around here the scramble winners have the sharpest pencils. For me had a amazing putting day canned about 5 putts in the 10 ft and in range. Had been experimenting some left hand low with the Bulls Eye putters. Had done some revamping on my rusty Scotty. Brought it out and putted left hand low and it did good for me

> >

> > Thought of you this week. Found a beautiful Mizuno ( I presume persimmon) driver on the pile this week. Looks to be the same vintage as the 3 wood you posted but has a black finish. Beautiful club and fits my eye great. If I play vintage golf this afternoon I plan on hitting it.

>

> My back's playing up at the moment, this time from lack of activity! I spent a day and a half in bed after getting a fever, and propped myself up to do some work. Should have got up occasionally to stretch, but I felt terrible. Anyway, this time it's just muscular, but just thinking about swinging those heavy X-31s makes me wince.

>

> I hope you give the Mizuno a bash. My favourite driver growing up was a shallow-faced black Mizuno persimmon with a steel shaft. I hit some great driver with it that I can even remember -- and feel -- today.

> The blonde driver and 3w I posted were probably not originally that colour. I think someone with good taste refinished them that way to bring out the beautiful grain. Most Mizuno persimmons I've seen are either some sort of dark red/reddish brown shade or black. But I'm no expert and certainly don't claim to have seen them all.

> Anyway, they made some great drivers back in the day. Based on the amount I see on sale now, I think Honma were probably more popular here back in the persimmon days, but I've hit both and I personally think Mizuno have the edge. Their fairways are certainly more to my liking, being a bit smaller in the head.

> Fortunately, I don't have to choose between one or the other, so I can enjoy both alike.

> Hey, if I get my back right, I might even be able to hit my Toney Penna 4 and 5 woods again, but those ProPel shafts require some serious back strength.

Do your back a favor there old buddy do not mess with the ProPel shafts--- As much as I love my older Macs the shafts are getting a little too much for me now days. That Mac 2 wood I hit so good has been changed somewhere in it's life and I think it may be a R-300 by counting the steps.

Ok I can see that--thanks for the education--- now on the grip part was I correct of just imagined that? I know that flat panel GP grip was popular back in the day. I know I put quite a few on when I first got started putting them on. Just thinking about that I used Ronson lighter fluid in the squirt can and 2 sided tape. I used to buy that stuff by the case from a wholesale house we did business with. My old Man strictly forbade me to use gasoline. I think I gave like 0.15 a can for that stuff and we sold it in the Pro Shop for .25 a can. Everyone in those days smoked and carried a Zippo lighter and we sold flints too. NC was a "tobacco state" and had no tobacco tax at the time and we sold packs of cigarettes for .65 and we were a little high on price there. It is funny when I get to talking about some thing on here the memories from way back come to me clear as day

I'm not sure what grip came on these originally. Most of what I have seen has been some sort of leather wrapped grip with a flag grip cap. The 8813 I got was used, regripped, but was an original 8813. I wish I had that putter today.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I've been doing pretty good keeping my club hoarding tendencies under control for about a year now but I kind of fell off the wagon today and caved in to the urge once again.  Nothing too special to speak of but the stuff is in pretty nice shape and it's a full bag - my favorite way to find old clubs.

The bag is a big bad full size staff bag by Wilson in a cream color with brownish-gold piping complete with matching rain cover, wood head covers, and even a matching shoe bag!  The bag set is quite worn but intact.  Inside were a 2-pw set of Spalding Pro Model "Personal" irons with Power-Dyned shafts of unknown flex.  Actually the 2 iron is a different model but the head is the same type just with different stampings.  Shaft is the same too.  I'm sure these are store-line irons but they seem a little nicer than the usual junk in that they have reasonable looking ferrules and decent faces/grooves.  Zero bounce and razor sharp leading edges of course.  Pre-"new style" midsize Tour Wraps in great shape is a bonus too.

The woods are 1, 3, 4, & 5 Ping Eye 2's with ZZ Lite shafts, also in excellent condition with the same grips.  I know nothing about Ping outside of their putters but I'm expecting good things due to all the pro Eye 2 sentiment around here.  For how weird they look on the face view they look very nice at address.

Everything in the bag had covers on it so it's all quite nice.  All I was really after were the woods but I like the look and heft of the irons too so it's a win-win I guess.  Too bad it's winter here so I'll have to wait a few months to try them.

I don’t need these, and I don’t use regular shafts, but I couldn’t leave them at the thrift store for someone to come along and break up the set. They are too nice to leave behind. After ski season is done and I have some time, I’ll find a nice home for them with someone who will get them out on the grass where they belong.

2-9, 1966 Dynapowers, in just wonderful condition. They have been hit, but not a lot, and there is very little wear on faces. Original leather grips, shaft bands are perfect, and the heads are wonderful front and back…I love the duel frosted stripes on the back.

I really wish they had stiff shafts. Now I have two sets of Dynapower irons with regular shafts, both beautiful, neither one of which I can hit. At least I still have my '85 Staffs in the bag.

Oh wow, they are in great condition. Nice find.

You said 2-9, but I can see a PW in there as well.

The "profile" of those irons to me look like the 62-63 Top- Flites. Probably hit pretty decent overall--- And that is one nice old bag--- Wilson built some great heavy leather bags in those days. I am also going to speculate which for me is fun to do when finding whole sets like this. The guy who owned those was a dyed in the wool old school Spalding man who could not afford pro line clubs. At one time or the other he won the Ping woods in a event and may have won the bag too. Hey just in fun

I sorta agree but then again on the mainstream equipment forums that club is at least 10 years old and would be considered "antique"--- Ya know just sayin

Nice find, they look to be in great shape.

I notice they go Driver, 2w, 3w, 4w, with no 5w. This got me thinking. Was there a time when the 4w was the most lofted wood in a "standard" set?

When I took up golf in the 80s, wood sets were generally 1-3-5. I've seen sets on auction sites that go 1-3-4-5, and sometimes, usually going further back, 1-2-3-4, but I have rarely, if ever, seen a 1-2-3-4-5 set.

You are right. The sets were usually 1-4 up through the 1950’s and even into the early 1960’s By the mid 1960’s the common set was 1,3,4,5 for a 4 club set but I think at that time three club sets of 1-3-4 became more popular. By the 70’s and 80’s 1-3-5 became popular.

What is interesting as I have started focusing on collecting 1950’s woods, early 1950’s specifically, I try to imagine how the clubs were played. Most of my 1-4 sets have 2-woods that are the same length as the driver and nearly the same sized head, but the driver measures 11* while the 2-wood measures 14* or so. The same length is intriguing as it makes me think that the 2-wood was looked upon as a driver replacement on tight holes or when the driver wasn’t clicking. I rarely play my 2-wood of the deck and have used it more as a high-lofted driver.

I've also seen a few 1-3-4 sets here. As they are all secondhand auction sites, I did half wonder if the 5w was not included because it was too beaten up...I see lots of pristine 4-woods come up for auction, and I have a pet theory that players didn't use them much, preferring the 3w and 5w, so the 4w was put away in the cupboard and forgotten about!

Anyway, that's interesting about the 2w, as it backs up a finding of mine. I have two 2-woods, one a restored Mac M85 from 1953 or 4, and the other is a Honma 2w. Now the Mac has a shallower face, and probably was designed to be hit off the fairway, though it is beyond my skill. The Honma 2w is little different from my Honma drivers; it has a driver's shaft, and the head is about the same size. But, as you mentioned, it has more loft, and I use it in exactly the ways you described: on tighter holes and when I am struggling with the driver.

Incidentally, I wonder if the changes in wood configurations brought about some loft creep? For example, are the lofts of the 1950's 4-woods about identical to the lofts of the 1980's 5-woods?

What is interesting is this gauge that Golfsmith sold and I’m sure was owned by many repairmen and diy’ers alike.

XHQ9GF3FPAFV.jpeg

It is made to check wood lofts that were generally considered industry standard for persimmon woods. Notice it has 11*, 14*, 17*, & 20*, not 1,2,3,4,or 5. If I check my 1953 Macgregor M75’s the driver is right at 11*, the 2 at 14*, the 3 at 17* and 4 at 20*. Now use the same gauge to check my 1968 Powerbilt set which is 1,3,4,5 and the driver measures 11*, the 3 measures 14*, the 4 measures 17*, and the 5 measures 20*. Each 4-club sets, though made 15 years apart and with different numbers on the sole but a four club set generally gave you those four lofts, regardless of the number on the sole.

You mention your 2-wood is hard to hit off the deck, and I find it difficult also. Well, ladies sets of woods in the 1950’s generally dropped the 2-wood in the 4-club set and included a 5-wood instead. Could it be that the marketing department in the 1960’s decided to market their clubs as easier to hit because it as a 1,3,4,5 set instead of the old-fashioned 1-4 set, and you now hit your 4-wood further than you ever had, nevermind the fact the lofts were the same and now the 3-wood was as hard to hit as the old 2-wood?

Tossing a brief comment on the wood lofts discussion....

My Golden Ram woods from mid 80s had 11* driver, 16* 3w, and 19* 4w. I don't know that I have or have had a 5w to compare its loft.

Ram woods were produced in 1, 3, 4 and 5.

Ping made Eye2's in 4 and 5 wood models.

Spauldings sets from the 60's featured the driver plus 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 woods. those are said to be 3 and 4 wood heads on longer shafts.

Ping published specs, I believe their 4 was 19*, cannot say what the other manufacturers were building.

currently playing:
FT-5 - D
Cally FT hybrids
Hogan Edge GS, 4-PW
Vokey Oil Can 52, 56
Ping Anser 2

TM FlexTech Lite/Titleist StaDry

My PowerBilt Citation from that vintage is 22° 5W. The driver, 3W and 4W are the same as you listed.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Deejaid, those are very nice. Similar to the ones I acquired recently from a friend. I posted them over in the Spalding thread. It's a 1-2-3-4 set that were refinished at some point. Same sole plate and all in very nice shape. I hit them a couple weeks ago for the first time and liked them. So do you guys think these were from the 50's???

Nice Bigarch. Those look to be 1950’s era, maybe early 60’s, I don’t know Spalding stuff very well so I’m just making a guess based on the sole plate shape and engraving from things I’ve seen. I’m curious if the finish was originally black or changed to black when they were refinished. Cool set.

I was curious about the same thing myself. You'd hope those would have a nice grain underneath and it might be worth it to scrape off the black and reveal the grain with a nice refinish in a lighter color. But it's a total crap shoot and they may be better off being left black. I know often, that's why they went with black....to hide blemishes in the wood. I typically don't go through the hassle of refinishing something anymore unless its something that I want to keep as a display only item...which is rare for me.
