Might have a good update for this thread next weekend after I have collected what I just won on eBay tonight ... first non-hickory UK purchase for some time (since April lol) .. if I have bought what I think I have, for what I paid, I shall be turning several cartwheels :)

Here are the two pics in the auction that caught my eye and prompted me to bid:

On my set the wedges have "Slazenger" on the back and Equalizer and Exploder on the sole, all the others have "Slazenger" on the sole...

Did you say a buck sixty? Wow.

Hence the cartwheels ... :D

It was one of those auctions that slips under the radar due to a generic title line ("vintage clubs"), mis-spelling of Slazanger (sic) in the description, and no mention at all of Hogan. God bless non-golfers lol.

I have also seen Slazenger Precisions that are stamped as you describe '53 Precision.

The wedge shown is the only photo that shows the back or sole of any iron, so you could yet be right that these are the 58/59s. I'll post a pic when they arrive. I will be happy either way!

dont get excited -those were budget entry department kmart clubs
Yeah I purchased them purely because they're still new in box. While I have no intention of hitting them, I still have no idea what I'll end up doing with them. At the moment I like them for novelties sake more than anything....

Hey, I gave my banker a set of these - in used shape, but will clean up nice. Woods were mint.

And he really likes them.

Compared to comparable Northwesterns, Campbells, and Spaldings, these are pretty nice budget clubs. The grain in the laminated drivers is real pretty.

This latest little beauty will have it's work cut out for it trying to kick my Sonartec 13* out of the bag. I've pumped it full off lead just to give it a fighting chance...

Woodridge, nice score on those old Mac Irons!

Thanks! I've seen a few partial sets in that store, but couldn't believe my luck. I was especially happy that someone had bought a wedge to go along with the set. All the irons have the same serial number, but the wedge does not have one.

I like the MT detailing down the face either side of the grooves ... that's the sort of attention to detail that the accountants would kick into touch these days ...

No kidding! The higher end jdm irons lack the detailing that these old macgregor's have.

Winner there, get some pics up, gutted i never saw tjose.

Here you go ... seemed 'decade appropriate' to stick the MacGregor M85Ws in with them!

Putter is a Slazenger Eaglet.

A previous owner has probably taken the Sand Iron sole to the grinder which has unfortunately obliterated the word "Exploder" :)

I'm tempted to have this iron set completely tarted up. Heads refinished, maybe even new shafts, new ferrules ... etc etc

Certainly need new grips ... any suggestions for that ? I'm learning towards Avon Chamois II in black at the moment ... want something with the period "look" ...

Nice set BJ! If those Slazengers are stainless steel, couldn't they be buffed up with a dremel tool?

Shafts and ferrules would be a bit more involved. By all means go for it - though it's maybe worth bearing in mind the conversation I had with true temper's technical support, who told me that steel shafts don't degrade with age and there's no reason in terms of playability to replace a shaft unless it's been structurally compromised by either rust or a bend or a dent.

Re. grips, I'm of the view that leather wraps look great - but black tour velvets never look out of place.

Have you played them yet?

Blade,

Those are fabulous, what a find for over this side of the pond. V jealous, i agree definately reshaft them, personally am a believer in that they are meant for playing and playing with slippery old grips with half rusted shafts is no fun whatsoever.

Where do you get the chamois grips from? Never seen them form sale?

Tart em up :)

Tarted up!!! Love it. Think I'll use it locally and throw the boys for a loop. Nice 2 wood you have there.
Saw that too, brought out a hardy chuckle. Have to remember that term to slip into the conversation at the right moment.

Seem to see a reoccurring theme with Avon Chamois grips. Must be because they have that period look BJ referred to. I was thinking of some Lamkin Permawraps for a recently acquired set of Wilson's. Leather look without the cost. Realize grips are a subjective thing.....whatever works......well maybe not a set of loudmouth grips on a vintage set.

A followup question has occurred to me. Should I try and salvage older grips? Point in case, picked up some Wilson's with original GP Classic cord grips. They are hard as a rock and I don't care for cord grips. But they are not rotted and in pretty good shape (5/10). I have experience and tools necessary to remove grips. Do you folks make the attempt to save them for.......posterity I guess. TIA for opinions.
