Here you go @Swingingk, the 1961 Spalding Executives.

I cleaned them up with Bar Keepers Friend and applied new paint fill.   Conditioned the leather grips with a different conditioner that is fantastic.   These grips feel like a soft leather club chair.    Best feeling grips I’ve ever had on a set of classic clubs.

Those are real beauties!  Very colorful.  Very nice ferrules too.  Even the shaft bands are snazzy and intact.  That's a great score in my opinion.

I'm digging the groove pattern on the faces.   The angled borders look really cool.  I've seen some Hogans and Hagens with interesting grooves but yours are extra sassy.  😆

I picked up this 2-10 set of Pro-model from Teevons a few years back and while nice, do not have the bling of your Executives.

Don’t sell yours short, they look fantastic as well!   I am really digging this era of Spaldings.  I believe I need to find a set of those Pro Model Top-Flites.

Re: the angled scoring line boarders.   I plan on taking them out tomorrow but I hit some practice balls in the backyard this afternoon.  The angled scoring line boarders gives the illusion of a wider sweet spot.   When I was checking some of these sets out on eBay it was something I noticed as well. That, and the high pointed toe.  Love that look.

odd to think I was one of the youngest guys in the group back then, now it's the opposite.

I need to find more older pals.

Yes the late 50's and early 60's Spaldings are real lookers.  I suppose the same could be said of Wilson, MacGregor, Powerbilt, and others.  Even the cars of that era are flashy.

I'm curious how you'll find the view of the face from address.   I bet it looks cool.

"The 1961 Spalding Executive - now with 50% more illusion of forgiveness!"  Haha

For the Hogan aficionado, acquiring a set of Redlines seems to be de rigueur.  Once had a set.  They were certainly aesthetically appealing, but did not get on with them all that well.  Demanding beyond my skill set.  Perhaps the Apex 4 shafts had something to do with it.  Certainly not as playable (in my hands) as the appropriately shafted '99 Apexes.  As always, YMMV.

Sounds like half the guys in my bud's group, that are unable to follow the flight of their ball.  Know who the usual suspects are, so when playing with them, spend half my time watching where they are hitting. Just to keep things moving along, minimize the time spent looking for balls.  If I ask where did you hit it, an all to typical response is......"It sounded like it went right".   Attempting to keep track of all the ball spraying going on, forget where I've hit my mine.

Sounds like a typical round with my men's league group.  Most of them don't hit it far enough or high enough for that to be a problem, but I know when I am in a funk I have to have someone behind me because I have no idea where the ball is going!  I used to be able to follow most ball flights from the side, but not anymore, especially in the morning looking into a bright, but cloudy sky.  That is in large part why I have picked up 4 dozen coloured balls with matt finished for DW and I.  Hopefully they will help not only with following the ball in the air, but finding it on the ground.

Believe you will find colored balls to be of help..  I've noticed a benefit in tracking ball flights when using them.  Especially in reduced brightness, cloudy sky conditions.  Yellow slightly more than green (only a couple found ones), but not a meaningful difference either way.  No one in my golf circle plays colored balls, so quick to spot which one is mine.  In fact, just bought a couple doz. Bridgestone e12 Soft yellow balls the other day on January closeout at the LGS.  Since "discovering" them last fall, been liking how they play with modern or classic.  Softer (50 compression) without feeling to soft like a Duo.

Thanks for the tip.  The 4 dozen balls I bought are in fact Duos so we shall see regards softness.  Will keep an eye out for Bridgestone e12's when it's time to replenish.

I've probably posted about this before, but why let that stop me?  LOL

Several years ago, I was playing with a couple guys from WRX.  One of them had some ZStar XV balls in yellow, while I was playing the white.  He talked about how he hated the yellow, I was curious, so we traded sleeves.  I put it in play right away.

Hit a tee shot that rolled into fescue (an American faux links course on some holes).  As we're walking towards the ball, I could see that yellow, in the fescue (albeit fall season fescue, not full summer healthy stuff), some 40 yards away.  There was a white ball nearby that I didn't see until I was within a few feet.

I found that interesting.

The Srixon yellow is really quite good.  It's offered on quite a few golf balls in their product line.  Something for everyone.

I've decided to test the new matte orange color of the Duo Professional, bought a dozen a month or so ago.  Certainly is a little bright.  Haven't been a fan of the visual of the matte balls, but I thought it was worth an effort.

I had used the E6 in yellow, very good ball and easy to spot.

Pinnacle Gold in yellow was also a nice playing ball.

after fixing cataracts a few years ago - white balls became so much easier to track and locate.

this fall (last fall), one of our group offered us all sleeves of hot pink ZF's.. those were fun.

we called them all Allis to honor the late, great PA who had just passed.

hearing 'Go Allis' for 18 holes.....

what a bunch of knuckleheads we can be.

I love golf and all my pals that play.

These Spalding Topflites are the Pro model and I believe the same as Al Geiberger used in his eventful 59. I like them, they have a different feel to the Turfriders I commonly play, stiffer and harder but very reponsive.DSCF4003.JPG.d0d0bfc4ab8acd0cd1c562b1425ce7eb.JPG849720589_DSCF3954(1).JPG.731640302d13ee2a86484644d5f5aa56.JPG

I found a set of these last year.  Great irons.  Chrome on my nine iron is worn thin and it looks like it has a copper underlay, like Mizuno keeps bragging about on their MP20's.  Can anyone confirm if this is true?

High quality electroplating. 2 or sometimes 3 stage. What you are looking at is cadmium. Outside chance there may be copper underneath.

The Macgregors of same period used copper so when the Colokrom irons were made the finish was achieved by copper plating the whole head and then masking off the face before electroplating with chromium.

Compare and contrast today's build quality. I had some PGA irons, their top-of-the-range Tommy Armour Collectors edition with one stage electroplating which fell off as soon as you looked at it. Even the Spalding Tour Editions the chrome is very thin.

Bring back Elvis, I say.

This is what I’m looking at. Doesn’t look like the nickel layer that you see when most chrome played Irons start to wear thin.

Thrift store randomness continues. I picked up the 1 & 4 of these Louisville Golf Personal Models yesterday at Goodwill and I found the 3 wood in another Thrift store 3 or 4 months ago. The driver has a roundish shape that looks like it will work well, the fairway woods are a bit small I think. Nice shafts on the 1/4, some goofy thing I'm not familiar with in the 3; lots of steps close together and it gets thicker after the grip and thins back out. Its a regular anyway, so when they get redone I'll put a Dynamic stiff in there, make them the same color, and see how they play. I'm into all three for $10 total, so a cool little pickup of a set that should refinish nicely.

Sweet finds.  Those look like very solid woods especially with the extra thick inserts.  I'm liking the clean look too.  Nice!

Knocked another one off my list, found a speed slot driver. I had to get my license renewed today and hit up the thrift store across the street. Hogan Apex driver with a Legend 4 shaft. Other than my Commemoratives, I don't know a lot about Hogan wood, so I'm not sure what year this is; any info on year would be appreciated. The head has a nice shape, like my '53 heads, although not as deep. This should refinish nicely and I look forward to hitting it. Today isn't a sale day, so I had to pop for the full price of $2.99.

Picked this FG-17 2i up recently for a decent price. It's been reshafted with a DG200 that's on the short side--same length as a 3i--so I might reshaft it or extend it.

I've mentioned on here before my set of Wilson FG-J8s, which appear to be identical to the FG-17s, so I was keen to compare the two. They're almost identical, but the J8s have a slightly thicker muscle pad. I measured the J8 3i and FG-17 3i with callipers, and the 3i was about 1mm thicker, which is less even than a sixteenth of an inch.
