A few pics on my latest purchase. I wasn't even aware of the PGA brand persimmon, but I found this beauty on Ebay last week. It's a Tommy Armour Silver Scot Collector 709 by PGA. Doesn't look like it's ever been played before.

I've often thought that pga tommy armours were seriously underrated.

My first true set was pga tommy  armour bought in an off course pro shop in mid 70s. 2-pw, 1,3,4,5 woods. Played the irons non stop til early 90s, classic 985 style reverse musclebacks, keep them in LA and play them when I'm there and play golf with my daughter (double fun). Played the woods until metal woods came along. Trouble was I had necked the 3 and 5 wood and busted them, pga replaced them but the replacements weren't nearly the same.

So for years played just the pga tommy armour driver and a golfcraft dick mayer 3 wood that I still have but am also scared to hit now. One more neck job and they could be done for. Too scared to hit any of the old persimmon, esp the golfcraft that I haven't ever even seen that model for sale over the years.

The old memories never go away lol

First foray into the classic club market. Thanks to @BIG STU and others I have joined the dark side.

I don't know much about the Wilson X31 but having given them a hit at the range (gently as the grips are original but very worn) they felt great and produced a lovely flight,

1974-5 X-31s, right? I've got a set of the previous model somewhere. That looks to be a impressive reverse muscle design.

Apex 4 is stiff, although I find them a bit softer than S300s. Its a lovely shaft if you play the stiff range. I'll assume the Apex pro is similar but perhaps someone will correct me; I have Apex and Legend shafts, but no pros.

That's a nice head. I have several Hogan drivers and love the shape. It's hard to go wrong with a club that Mr. Hogan's name on it.

Sometimes things are so rare that only one set isn't enough.  The original 1976 Maxfli "Australian Blade" that were "Made in Australia".  Two sets now as well as a set of the 1978's which were the first year they were made in the US.

Maxfli AB's.jpg

Got a weakness myself for "made in Australia", albeit right handed. Just so clean, very cool.

Anyone know the meaning of the ferrule serials? I have a set of 23S2, 24S2, and 23X2. The letter denotes shaft flex, the 23 sets I have still have the Dunlop TT Dynamic shaft labels. The 24 set does not have labels but are the same steps.

Last number I assume is swingweight as originally assembled.

So the first 2 digits, do they denote production runs? Can't discern any differences between sets.

Searched the old threads but nothing on this particular iron. I know someone out there knows! TIA

24 sets!!!  And people have been telling me I have a problem getting a second set......   I'll have to go have a look at mine but it might be worth sticking the 23S2 and 24S2 on a scale and seeing what the swing weights are.

Hahaha the set starting with 24 serial number, I only have 3 sets!

For comparison, all are 3 irons. I assume none are with original grip

23S2 D3, 436 gr, griptec easy grip

24S2 D1, 432 gr, ping golf pride grip

23X2 D3, 426 gr, victory grip

None of the grips look oversize

@LeftyMac@MrFlipper the "Made In Australia" a bit of a grail set for those of us in Australasia 🙂 Pretty much the direct descendant of the clubs Trevino got from Dunlop-Slazenger in Sydney. Wish I had some!

Very much a grail thing for me too. Most folks don't have an appreciation for them and don't seem to value them much at all. Timeless classics! Appreciate the comment

Talking of Australian Blades, does anyone have any info on these look-alikes?

The ferrules are unusual for UK clubs so I'm not sure where they originated..

The 1 iron was found separately and some crazy person has bent the loft to 23.5 degrees and almost snapped the hosel.

Profile is almost identical to the black dot Australian Blade show.

Can I ask what loft the 3i is?

Seems strange to me to bend the 1i to what is about the same loft as a 3i, unless the whole set has been bent weak.

The 3 iron is 23 degrees.

I found the clubs on ebay within months of each other but from different sellers, which was strange because I've never seen the model for sale again.  My suspicion is that a previous owner of the 1 iron didn't like the loft so bent it to something they could handle, and pretty much ruined the hosel in the process!

Here are the lofts as measured for the 3 to SW:

3 4 5 6 7 8 9 PW SW
23 27 31.5 34 39 43 48 51.5 58.5

Picked up a couple of Wood Bros Texans. I pretty sure they've both been reshafted, and possibly reworked a bit long ago. The 10* head has a Honma S-2 flex carbon/boron shaft, which I have in a Honma wood and really like, so I'm hoping it will be a good combination with the Wood Bros head. The 11* head has an Aldila HM-40 shaft, which appears to be a pretty stiff flex. There's definitely signs that this one has been reshafted, as there is a filled in hole on the neck where a screw must have been.

These were both bought for hitting, and I hope both will turn out to be good players. I swung them in the garden, and the balance felt really good.
