No new acquistions...?

Recommended Posts

Recently ventured down the expensive road of filling out a set. Kinda goes against one of the core reasons we love these vintage clubs but my heart over ruled my head again. Mostly cuz of shipping on just 2 clubs I basically doubled the $37 bucks I had into the initial 9 clubs I started with and I still need a 2 iron and a SW.

  3 iron is a perfect match condition wise. Other than serial number you’d never think it wasn’t from the set. Dreaded Legend 3 shaft like the rest of the set.

  5 wood was an extremely pleasant surprise when it arrived for multiple reasons. First its condition is awesome. Great mahogany color is very rich, elegant even. And I wasn’t aware Hogan did this with their sole plates. Has a Legend 4 shaft in it so 1976-78 I think. Hogan ahead of the times perhaps cuz i see a little TM V Steel in this. Check out the extra mass in it. 3 wood sole plate is normal. At first when I reached into the shipping box I thought g.d. it the club is water swollen and sole plate is lifting.

   Have to admit I wasn’t a huge fan of these Y faceplates and the Speedslot initially but they have grown on me. Pictures don’t do it justice. Has very quickly become a favorite club of mine already and I haven’t even hit it yet. Won’t till I can get outside and see it fly. Not gonna waste time in a dome or simulator with it. Gotta say I’ll be gutted if it doesn’t feel fantastic. If the 7 woods have this sole design how cool would it be with say a 4 hybrid Recoil shaft in it. Vintage hybrid hmm….63F08DCC-9E62-4D1F-89DC-0D028A8A1D84.jpeg.84060707cdc1c41ffab1227786cbd62e.jpeg7467AD0F-48AD-45B9-9E7C-78891309D4D4.jpeg.7941a853022e23f25df71189158c74a1.jpeg6C3C4C4B-E53E-4B76-B098-3058172902C7.jpeg.f67a2427306287a185a84685c9ab4599.jpegF2FD04B7-F8B3-4206-B930-15669A9285F2.jpeg.2863a3efa6bb9aabac79e79f425d8182.jpeg6849E866-7471-47C3-A969-B674283247EB.jpeg.db1809a9084caf29b9289ef49b4ceb61.jpeg53ECDF69-2CB9-4EB7-9B58-A51D8460EB9D.jpeg.b40d27906fd97446bf42cc7316c8e0eb.jpeg3 wood has lived a harder life but is still pretty solid overall. Luckily whoever did the sky marks was so bad they didn’t wreck the persimmon toe of the club. Regripping these next so gonna be interesting shoe horning a .600 core grip on a .700 butt core shaft. Got a Zebra putter I’m in the middle of gussying up to game with this set. Perfect vintage wise for late 1970’s. Sooner or later I’m bound to stumble on a Special SI in a bargain barrel to pair with this instead of paying $25-35 on line. There is a few medallion sand irons I believe are for this set online but I’m trying to resist. Looks like the Special SI they sold gazillions of is just a copy of that.

I just passed on a set of the Louise Suggs CF4000 3-9 at the Goodwill. Very nice condition, and the red paint fill next to black ceramic face looks fantastic. Didn’t think I’d play em and at $4.99 per club I didn’t want to spend the $35 bucks. If anyone is dying for them let me know and I’ll see if they are still there.

the set I have is 2-9 plus the 11, Pro-Pell Action shafts by MacGregor, w/1 stiffness - I forget what MacGregor stiffness it is, but since they're Louise Suggs', it's a lady's or senior's stiffness...interesting if it's something else. I removed the grips, they were not leather as I recall...
they are worth the $35, if you were to play them...I have a couple of other sets from different years, like a starter set of First Lady w/leather grips as I recall, not sure of the shafts...I would love to find a set or any clubs of Joyce Wethered.

hmm....do you have one of those grip installer tool thingy's. I still have one I got from Golfsmith, but it looks the same as what GofWorks is selling, they really help in the installation....
I think I have a gazillion Special SI...I'd love to know how to differentate between the years, if there is much difference...

I’m looking into that grip expander tool. Gonna see if PGA Superstore has one or I’ll just get one online.

  Not sure if the Hogan serial number thing is the same on wedges but I do know AMF owned Hogan till 1984 and you do see chrome Special SI with a Vektor(maybe) AMF shaft. Pretty sure the Medallion wedges just say sand iron on the soles but look the same in pictures anyways. Always seem to have the red labeled Apex shaft in them. Maybe a little more curve on bottom of face/sole and if they were in fact for this set that would be 73-78. The beryllium SI didn’t show up till 88 I believe

ok....more work - now I gotta go look at shafts

Ok, came across 4 Special SI in a bag of Sure Outs (and 1 Sure On & 1 Special PW w/Sunburst & unreadable red shaft label)...

- 1 is in red Hogan Apex w/"0" for stiffness & AMF above Hogan and Hogan grip;

- 1 is in Hogan Apex red w/"0" & no AMF and Hogan grip;

- 1 has no label & a Chamois grip;

- 1 is in Hogan Apex Extra black w/"4" and Golf Pride grip...oops, this one says "Special 60"

all hosels are just plain black & all but the 3rd one have straight line "crimping"...the 3rd has no marks on it. All "Special SI", "Special PW" & "Special 60" are in red lettering.

I know I have at least 2 "Special SI" wedges that are either blue or green lettering....somewhere

Regarding the 5 wood, I believe your first observation was correct ... a moisture swollen head. I think what you'll find if you pop the soleplate is a lead weight that has risen and buckled the aluminum.

Unfortunately for me you appear to be correct G.D. it! My attention to details is often not so good. If you run your finger nail along the very front you can feel more separation in the middle of the plate. Guess I was too intoxicated by its condition, damn dreamer.

  Pretty amazing in a way cuz rest of the club is fantastic. I was kinda amazed how great shape the edges of the plate still are even if it had really light use. Was wondering if it was made out of some really hard exotic for the day alloy.

  Gonna dissect the club in a few days. Never done that so will be interesting. Hopefully it’s fixable. Guess maybe I should start searching for Hogan of the era I can get as cheap as possible for a plate just in case. Be a shame turning this into a desktop pen holder.

I've run into that on a number of Hogan woods in the past. And not only their persimmon but laminated as well. You wouldn't think laminated maple would swell like that being more of a closed pore wood structure.

I think there may be some kind of corrosion thing (galvanic?) going between the aluminum sole plate and the lead weight under it as well.  A white powdery substance seems to build up between the two materials and create a pressure that can push the sole plate out.  I've seen it a few times.

Interesting. You could very well be correct.

After coffee this morning, I broke down and messaged the FB seller.  These had been up for nearly 3 months with no sale with a bunch of other “stuff”.  Yes sir, yes sir, two bags full.  *grin*

1963 Wilson Staff Fluid Feels that are in eminently playable condition. 2-9 irons and the accompanying WS persimmons.  Sadly, the driver is MIA.  3&4 woods are regripped, but still sporting all the decals.  Irons have the originals in supple leather.  They need a real deep cleaning, but will come back nicely.

Bonus was a MacGregor bag with a set of ‘86 JN Golden Bears in nice shape, a set (1-4) of H&B Citations that need serious help and a few putters.  A nice Bullseye was there with the original playable grip! Got some olde metals too.  Lastly, a nice Voit bag.

  Gosh, sure seems like you can’t go wrong with any Wilson Staff iron can you?!! Especially any in the 60’s.

  I don’t have any yet but I sure won’t hesitate whenever the opportunity presents itself. Nice work

I'm in awe of the size of these blades.  Dinky doesn't describe it.  They should be interesting play the first time around.

(Working another deal on some Spaldings to finish up two sets.  Got a set of '74 Dy-Nertial woods, need irons.  Also have a set of '71 MV2 irons, need the woods.  Guy local to me has my needs all in one Spalding bag cheap.)  😉  Just waiting on a response.

Oh, did I post my '52 Wilson Top Notches from eBay?  hahaha

The two sets I found are identical and in great shape including the leather grips. The market for classics is soft and the price was right. I found them at a nice little shop in Toronto.

I never buy online, I want to make sure of their condition and shipping inflates the price way beyond what they are worth. The fun is in the hunt.

I’m with cold war era on this.  I haven’t gone further that 10 miles from wherever I’m at to pick up these sets from FB marketplace.  I’ve also gotten a few really smart deals on eBay for under $40 including shipping.  Yeah, a real small $20-25 gamble for some really decent playable vintage clubs.

The score yesterday was less than a mile from where I got the Honmas and both were 8 miles from home.

I spent a cold day rejuvenating some sets and cleaning bags.  The JN Golden Bear set and the Turf Riders got a good cleaning, the leather grips were deep cleaned and conditioned with a Lexol kit (my first time using it). The results were fully acceptable with some nice tacky grips.  Once everything was dry, I dug out the paint pens and some fiddle time while watching the pros play at Torrey made all pretty.

Waiting on the chill to disappear today and off to the course with the K-28s!

Awesome!  You sound like me.  I have had great results with the Lexol treatments.  Are you doing the 2 step?

I’ve found that sometimes a second treatment with bottle #2 makes for even better results.  Maybe a month after the initial.

These cold months I’m going to hit each set every month with bottle #2 and see if that makes a difference.  Although all leather grips are slightly different.

The chill around here may not disappear for another 2-3 months.

Awesome!  You sound like me.  I have had great results with the Lexol treatments.  Are you doing the 2 step?

I’ve found that sometimes a second treatment with bottle #2 makes for even better results.  Maybe a month after the initial.

I’ll give that a try with the conditioner before heading to the Michigan home up north.  Yup, cleaner, then conditioner.

Last half of March will be packing and burning up free rounds at work course.  Dunno if I’m coming back to Houston next winter, so donating a bunch of stuff and trailering the good stuff up.

Been using a scotchbrite sponge and Dawn dish soap with hot water on the rubber grips.  The water usually runs black with dirt when doing that with these old sets, but they get some stickiness back. If they don’t, cheap new grips!

It’s 36* now, headed for mid 50s.  Next couple weeks are forecast cold and wet.

Taking a page out of @Hickory4evercollecting.  Someone had a set of 1963 TF Spade Faces on eBay.  I messaged the seller and we haggled a bit, he then told me he had a second set in even better shape.  I offered an amount for both and he accepted.

The "rougher" set isn't really that bad.  I think most of us here would put them in play.  The 7i is the roughest and doesn't have a matching serial.   Both sets have pitching wedges which is sort of a rare club from this year.  Shafts are really clean for both sets too.

Dude, the clubs are OK , but that Zenith!!!

I posted my new acquisition in the Grille and Stu suggested that I post this here as well.

I picked up my new replica Tom Stewart hickory shafted golf clubs. It is unusual in this forum to post clubs that are new but I think these qualify.

The heads were ordered from Edmonton and I had my friend Bill, one of our best craftsman install the new hickory shafts and install the suede leather grips that I like. I prefer playing original irons but like having a set of replica irons for bad weather.

Thanks. They play nicely as I have used a set on a number of occasions before. But they are almost too perfect with frequency matched shafts and 4* gaps. It is too easy to play in a modern style which is why I prefer the originals.

did purchase these today...more for the bag, nice heavy duty canvas (tho needs a "bit" of cleaning) & the leather is in decent shape. The irons are a starter set (3,5,7,9) of  MacGregor Tourney PT1 CF4000 in decent shape, the putter is unmarked except for 4 stars on the sole, & a Wilson 4350 laminated driver. Don't think $25 was too much...
