No new acquistions...?

Recommended Posts

While not exactly "new acquistions"....came across these 2 putters, for Caddyshack afcionados...the Billy Baroo.

They were made by 2 different Ray Cook golf companies (after Ray Cook passed on, his company was sold to one of these companies, then the other one bought it...I don't remember which is which).

The two sets I found are identical and in great shape including the leather grips. The market for classics is soft and the price was right. I found them at a nice little shop in Toronto.

I never buy online, I want to make sure of their condition and shipping inflates the price way beyond what they are worth. The fun is in the hunt.

The only time I buy "online" anymore is from someone I somewhat know like on here and on FB like forged club appreciation. Last club I technically bought on line was a year or two ago from a Forged Club Appreciation member. It was a 62 Mac VFQ 11 iron in pristine condition and he gave me a great price shipping included. In fact I put it into my main bag 2 weeks ago when I went back to my 588 wedges.

did purchase these today...more for the bag, nice heavy duty canvas (tho needs a "bit" of cleaning) & the leather is in decent shape. The irons are a starter set (3,5,7,9) of  MacGregor Tourney PT1 CF4000 in decent shape, the putter is unmarked except for 4 stars on the sole, & a Wilson 4350 laminated driver. Don't think $25 was too much...

For anyone going to the Toronto Golf and Travel Show next weekend, you might want to check out our Golf Historical Society of Canada booth. I warn you that you will be tempted as four of our collectors have some interesting collectables for sale.

Wish I had known that you were going to have a booth.  I turned down a chance to go.  😕

Too bad, it would have been nice. You might be interested in our April 2 trade show at the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in Oakville. Admission is free and lots of neat vintage stuff.

In our group, there is no pressure to buy. In fact when we play, you can try things out to see what you like. We approach things like a playing museum. It is all about fun.

Maruman made quite a few Guinness models, including a set of decent looking blades (Link). I'm afraid I've no idea what year yours are from, but a set of the same type is currently listed on a Japanese auction site for 4,000 yen (just over $30US at today's exchange rate).

Link

I've not seen any Guinness set priced for much more than that, to be honest. However, if you are based outside of Japan, then they might have a little extra rarity value to them.

No idea on Maruman's connection to Guinness. His connection to Mordor is, however, much more well documented.

Kinda like I used to do with the scrap pile finds----- I did that with the 57 Mac Diamondbacks and the 54 Precisions straight off the pile wrap the grips in athletic tape and take to the course cold turkey----- Yep it is fun---- The 57 Macs I took off the scrap pile on Friday along with a mix of metal woods and a bullseye off the pile. I think I shot like 81 on a tough course. Beat my then boss like a red headed step child and he had a full bag of the latest and greatest TM stuff--- Fun Fun Fun the most fun one can have IMHO with their clothes on

You and I enjoy the same things. Nothing better than doing a number on someone with the latest overhyped, overpriced gear.

I expect that I may have a couple new acquisitions on the weekend. I am working the Golf Historical Society of Canada booth at the Toronto Golf and Travel Show and four of our collectors have booths on both sides of ours. I expect to be tempted by some nice vintage equipment, especially the hickory gear.

Well, after several years of thinking about this....

I just hit the Buy It Now on a "relatively vintage" Mizuno driver, a 9* blue Mizuno TZoid Forged.  It's coming with a BiMatrix shaft, but the main selling point there is the ease I'll have pulling it, so that I can install something else.

A whopping 275cc, such as memory serves.  Not much different than my Louisville Smart Driver, which is 250cc.

For $25, I felt it was a no brainer.  Once it got through the force field of my multi-year procrastination, that is.  LOL

I realize it's not the normal vintage acquisition, but anything sub-400cc and metal is viewed as highly unusual in the modern landscape.

And, I have to admit I've always had a thing for these.  I also have a 13* 3w (or 2w) in the same model.

I actually have one of those blue Mizuno drivers with a ladies graphite shaft. My wife picked it out years ago from some shop stock because " it was pretty" Nowdays she hits a 420 CC I forgot what brand she found at Goodwill. I used to hit that little thing some could hit a little high 190 yard cut with it

The first day of the show was great and I only bought one club, a transitional baffing Cleek replica which modern hybrids bear an amazing resemblance. They are from the late 1800’s. This is of course a replica for my pre1900 set. Forgive the poor photo.

Just found in a box of "stuff"....'88-90ish Wilson Staff Gooseneck heads 2 thru PW, inside diameter of 0.370. I have no idea where or when I procured these. I'd love to reshaft these but wonder with what...I have acquired quite a number of shafts, both steel & graphite, when Golfsmith put everything on severe discount...

So I'm looking to pick ya'll's brains for opinions (hmmmm...what am I letting myself in for?)

Like I needed another set of these.

I was pursuing an online shop at work and saw these listed.  No photos of the grip. I called and as soon as the person on the other end said. “They appear to be leather and some sort of under listing on the back portions” I new exactly what they were.   Price was too good to pass up $75.

These may be my favorite irons. 1962-62.  Which was a great time for irons IMO. Wilson made the switch from Dyna Powered to Dyanpower Turf Riders.  Which are my favorite Wilson Staffs and MacGregor had the big M tourneys and for ‘62 the VFQs both in the FC 4000.   Probably by favorite years for MacGregor.  I’m not sure why Spalding wasn’t more popular as to they probably were making a easier playing club thank MacGregor.

These have the slightly longer 38.625 than the standard industry 38.5 length that Spalding had been using since at least the ‘50s.

I gave them a “reliced” paintfill to match their condition. /cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/https://wrxcdn.golfwrx.com/uploads/monthly_2023_02/BB10E918-832F-4894-A860-F7F085B3FFC5.jpeg.7b154215af3b9b727e1bdc1e6eb9b690.jpeg/cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/https://wrxcdn.golfwrx.com/uploads/monthly_2023_02/9FE5FB84-22F7-4E06-855B-8B62D878C0A9.jpeg.73b0729fac068fcca309d095a4a7caa6.jpeg/cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/https://wrxcdn.golfwrx.com/uploads/monthly_2023_02/5B3634CE-8F80-4C96-B5A6-9000F8B857AD.jpeg.49759e6e34574fc94680375d0aeb76f8.jpeg/cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/https://wrxcdn.golfwrx.com/uploads/monthly_2023_02/EDD1E362-9FD7-4464-B38C-5ECA72C1FBF2.jpeg.5573f6e7de3060081da766a6a63c4b60.jpeg/cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/cdn-cgi/mirage/e7549045455b02c1e4dd55cd9c158750b835c990d012716c6b42e7ec2c92bbec/1280/https://wrxcdn.golfwrx.com/uploads/monthly_2023_02/70A25953-67FE-4E96-BE28-8B7EA1F51569.jpeg.53d1be8da762fe9cfc1f7aa66411a881.jpeg

While I was out on the porch doing some persimmon club grips (severely needed), my Chinesium Honma knockoff grips showed up.  They’ll be a mid-week project.

There are *so* many quality Spalding sets out there, I'm almost grateful I didn't find a Spalding set back in December, 2000, when I was shopping my first blade set.  I would likely have gone a LONG way down the rabbit hole.  LOL

Those came out real well.  The sole plates are perfect and the color is great.  You’ll be proud to play those on the course.  Sometimes it’s not about the money, but conserving our goodies.

Oh my, shiny jewelry indeed!!! Those damn leather grips, kind of a curse. Nothing looks cooler but if you’re used to oversized or even midsized it’s essentially a crime to change them. Nice problem to have as they say.

My Wilson sets have them and they're great.  They’ll need a Lexol conditioning treatment to make ‘em perfect.
