No new acquistions...?

Those irons I THINK came with a different set of woods.  Those grips on the model 76s were matched up a different set of irons I had.

I'll check the archive when I get home.

Appreciate the effort but…

Yeah, but they were the correct year/model for the irons.  Probably never will match up the iron grips due to the customization factor.  The condition was comparable is what I was referring to.  Been hunting diligently for a similar set, but no joy yet.

Spalding had a few different sets of woods each year.  Those 76s were from '57 I agree.

I bought those you have now with I believe a different set of woods is what I'm saying.  I remember they had the same "regular flex" shafts when I picked them up.

However, "what is a 'toe hang'?'

It refers to how the putter head is weighted.  You check the toe hang by balancing it on your finger, on a table, etc.

The Spider on the right has zero toe hang, it's face balanced.  The second putter from the left is just short of 45* toe hang.  Something like an 8802 would have 90* toe hang.

The idea is to align the amount of toe hang in the putter with your stroke.  Someone with a gated putting stroke will do better with toe hang.  Someone who is straight back-straight through will do better with a face balanced putter.

And so on.

Thank you, tho I gotta pick your brain once more…what is a “gated putting stroke”?
I was taught to putt “straight back/straight thru equally” over 60 years ago…I putt the same today, no matter what the putter (I do gotta admit I use that same 60+year old putter🥸😂).

Anyway, that means when I practice with any other putter, I learn the characteristics of that putter with my stroke…

yeah...saw the putter is a First Flight & quite a nbice putter. However, "what is a 'toe hang'?'

Face balanced putters vs toe hang putters are supposed to match your stroke style not just your visual preference. If you swing the putter in any type of arc or if you swing it straight down the line is supposed to dictate which style you use.

If you have a putter with a double bend shaft and balance the club on your finger the face will probably be pretty horizontal if not perfectly these are face balanced. Lots of mallets like this

Do the same with a Anser style putter with a straight shaft and the toe will hang down as long as it isn’t center shafted. Different style necks will give it more or less hang and this maybe where a preference will come into play.

Be careful not to stumble to far down the Scotty Cameron fanboy path (I’m kinda guilty of being one) but there’s a good video of Brad Faxon and Scotty talking about releasing the putter head in the stroke. Brad admits there’s countless different ways putt and this is just the way he does it. Tiger does also and there some great stuff on that in the video but the really cool part to me was hearing the reverence Faxon and Tiger had for Crenshaw’ and would pick his brain whenever they could.

3 pretty fair putters all using toe hangers…hmmm

I now have a set of persimmons to match up with the ‘57 irons.  Life is good.   Now deleting all the watched persimmons in my ebay account.  🙂

While I was there, I picked up two wedges to finish the set. Vintage ‘50s  Tournament model PW and SW.

Thanks, better understanding now....tho, I still don't understand the term "gated putter stroke" - what does "gated" mean?

I'm not a Cameron user, or an Anser user either (tho, I love the DOC 17, it has the same "feel" as my H&B Grand Slam Mars 70 putter that is the putter in my bag at all times)

Just took delivery of this early John Letters putter, 1930s I'd guess.

Not sure if the paint fill is original but it's been there a while, the pistol grip is one of the more extreme examples I've seen.

It'll obviously need a new leather wrap to replace the insulation tape wrap currently on it!

Nice putter. I'm a great fan of this type and putt well with them. I saw a pistol grip like that on a Gassiat style hickory putter, a Gibson version I think.

Got this bag off FB market place for $25. Never seen the brand before, TAGS-by-LANIG, has anyone else? Suspected it was a woman’s even though it’s black with the pattern stitching it seems feminine to me but still semi cool. Sure enough it’s pretty short at 31 on short iron side and 33 on tall side and looks like about 8.25 opening. Seems like all my other bags are 34 & 36 tall respectively. Whatever the leather appearing material is it’s actually pretty lightweight. Check out the inner pad on the shoulder strap. Cool bamboo zipper pulls. Matching rain cover and 3 head covers.

With a little remake M85 & T85 bling. Notice how long the irons look in it.

I can’t explain it. Maybe because it feels like it’s gonna just spin in my hands as dumb as that sounds idk. Like I said it’s irrational cuz of these 2 clubs I’m way less afraid of the iron and believe me it’s not cuz I’m some great ball striker.

Something I’m gonna get over. Bullseye’s don’t scare me cuz of that heal weighting or whatever design of the traditional style. Don’t have one yet but always on the lookout for a nicer early one especially at Play it Again’s. Lots of interesting styles also on them. I like the Bullseye’s that aren’t two sided. Just me but I don’t like really beat up clubs and every Bullseye I come across has terrible marks and dents cuz they are so soft. Most call it patina I guess. There’s a few out there with my name on it somewhere just gotta find em.

We are very similar... I hear a lot, even on these classic forums that 2 irons are one of the harder clubs to hit after the 1 iron.  I have more confidence in a 2i than any fairway wood.  Probably because it was my recovery club after duffed persimmon drives while I was learning the past few years.  I would get to the green and just fumble with heel shafted blades and now looking back you are right I woulda rather hit a 2i off a fairway!

That’s impressive. I will hit long irons off tees or the right perfect lie in rough but off a fairway I absolutely love the baby persimmon 5 woods. Once you wrap your head around the club isn’t a hole lot bigger than the ball  the spin you get and the shape you can get that you never had any idea you’re capable of is just amazing. Explains my love of the modern hybrid but I’m sure i just lost a ton of you with that last comment. Definitely can’t shape a hybrid as easily either so it seems to be purely a size relevance.

I like my hybrid as well🤣

Also like a little persimmon 5w, but to me, the old 5w is more similar a modern 7w (a V-steel is still modern, right?).

The hybrid is an easier replacement for that 3i club, which was more in the bag as a decoration than anything else.

Not really a club, bag or ball new acquisition...just finished reading "The Gods of Golf" - hilarious, yet sooo spot on (better than "Golf In the Kingdom").

Should you pick up a copy, you'll meet the Great God MacKenzie (founder of the game of golf), Mulligan (God of Excuses), Shank (God of Cruelty, Eunuich (God of Lost Balls), & others (including the Goddess' of Slicers & Hookers)....all playing on the Country Club of the Gods - "Mount Augustus"

If you can find this gem...enjoy!

Found a box of heads, Copper Classic I w/the 1 thru PW & a Chicago Classic wedge (~50*?)...any idea who might have made the Copper Classic clubs? Or when?

Went looking for info the Chicago Classic wedge...nada - tho, I came across something that mentioned Chicago Cutlery. Did the Chicago Cutlery take a stab at the golf market sometime in the past?

Ah yes, Chicago Golf.  I'm not sure if they were at all related to Chicago Cutlery, I'll leave that to another.  They offered components for a good length of time, were moderately well regarded.  They had an interesting diagonal to their cavity back, I think one of the clubhead models was the 944DB?  Don't quote me on that, LOL.

well, I read your post...so went back to search even more, to find where I heard of Chicago Cutlery associated w/golf...there was a set of Chicago Cutlery Level Two clubs on Worthpoint site. So I googled Chicago Cutlery Golf and found this from 31 years ago

Thanks, that makes sense to me....I don't remember pulling the shafts on these & I used to "haunt" North Austin Golfsmith for "stuff", especially when Golfsmith was having their "going out of business" sale. Since I have no beryllium set, I'll shaft these....should be fun
