So I was bored yesterday, couldn't golf because it was raining........again. Decided to run some errands and that usually includes hitting a couple of the local thrifts to check out the inventory. Well, glad I did. First stop, found 3,4,7,8,9 Wilson Tour Blade FG-17 irons in great shape. Just a little bag chatter, faces in great shape, shaft bands intact and clean. Now will be searching for a 5, 6 and PW to fill out the set. Also found a Wilson Dyna-Powered Fluid-Feel PW. Leather Grip, pretty good shape....figured I can use that as the wedge. However, next stop found a lone Wilson Tour Blade (non FG-17) PW. Not as clean as the FG's but a good polishing hopefully will restore some luster. Fits into the FG set. Total expense $10.17, 50% off Labor Day sale.

All in all a pretty good haul for a couple hours about town. Mrs. didn't know why I was gone so long.

If you get stuck after your search for fill-ins and need a 5 iron I have one.

I bought these last month, finally had time to clean them up (or at least the irons) and regrip. They are MacGregor CF4000 PT2 (from 1959 I believe), 2 iron thru Double Service wedge, and the 1-2-3-4 woods (actually the driver is a slightly different model, 2-3-4 appear to match the irons).

They were really rough when I bought them but the ceramic faces seemed to be mostly intact, so for $25 I took a chance. There was a good bit of surface rust, and some pitting, but most of it cleaned up. While they have been stored improperly, they don't look to have too many miles on them.

Here's the before pics:

And the driver close-up with a big chunk missing from the face:

They had the original leather grips, which are always cool to look at and contemplate keeping but I just can't get around the hard feeling they transmit at impact. When I took off the grips I found that they did not have wooden butt dowels as expected, just a plastic cap/insert and a one inch long rubber cork-like material wrapped around the end of the shaft butt. Underneath the leather wrap was pitch paper (picture medical tape soaked in emulsified asphalt -- or a soft, thin roofing paper), and under that several wraps of some kind of paper tape that was very thick, dry, and brittle. Perhaps that was the source of the impact harshness.

I soaked them in a plastic water pitcher filled with enough vinegar to cover the heads for 15 minutes or so and then scrubbed them with a copper wire brush. That worked well on the surface rust but unfortunately, they have a good bit of rust pitting that did not come off. Here's some after pics (the faces actually looked a little better before I took them to the range -- I neglected to clean them before shooting these):

(I added my '63 Mac TP Expediter sand iron to the set)

Here's a shot of the new grips -- Lampkin Perma Wrap Classics -- these are a dead ringer reproduction of the original MacGregor leather wraps that came off of these.

I took them back to the range yesterday after completing the new grips and bending them to my usual specs. They definitely have a much better feel to them now. I love the way these set up and frame the ball, they seem to be a bit shorter heel to toe than most classic blades, and the ceramic faces definitely provide a visual aid for centering the ball. In fact, my usual miss is a toe shot, but I probably hit 150 balls and only had a couple of toe misses. I attribute that to the contrast of the chrome vs ceramic face. It really enabled me to focus on the face centers.

The woods are a disaster, but I'm looking forward to trying to resuscitate them. I'll have to finish up some other woods projects first, though.

All in all, I think these are terrific irons. I'm looking forward to taking them out for a full round.
Excellent excellent excellent !! you know I am a big Mac fan. I would not worry about the pitting rust on them that adds character in my opinion

Just some accessories. A Browning Bag Boy Automatic trolly (love that term from our UK mates) and 1,3,4 leather head covers. I operating on limited time this season for putting together and playing a vintage bag.

Needs a good cleaning and some new straps but in great shape. Really nice castings, sort of an art deco look.

Two fairly recent additions for me. I found the Wilson bag at Goodwill for $6.95 and picked up the Button Backs 2-PW to go along with it. Leather grips and regular Ultralite shafts on the 71's...

Callaway X-Hot 5 wood
Ping 410 7 wood
XXIO 10 5 Hybrid, Tour Exotics 6 Hybrid
Titleist T100 7-GW

Titleist Vokey 56*

Mizuno Pro 60*

Ping Redwood ZB 35" Blackout Pingman grip

Like Edberg's forehand, my swing is held together with a paperclip and a rubber band.

Very nice and I love the head covers. Those are the one thing that seems hardest to come by in my thrift store shopping. I have a lone set of Hot Z headcovers and that's it.

Thought I would add that in my "pick up" today, that I got the following:
3 & 4'wood, Macgregor tourney M75TW's
(2) Macgregor Super EOM M85w's
Macgregor A2W driver
Macgregor MTWL4 driver
Macgregor PT1 2-wood

And the aforementioned Calamity Jane putter, the Macgregor Toney Penna VFQ TP-63 2-iron and six other old irons/putters..

Love days like this!!

Gotta figure out what to keep and what to sell!

Yes, usually just the usual riff-raff of OEM and fuzzy headcovers. Today, there they were, buried in the pile. No cracking and just one small hole. But for a buck fity, not complaining.

Sweet pickup on the Wilson bag and sticks! Wilson is the vintage bag I'm working on. Lots of nice clubs around and good prices. Thinking of going on the bay for a set of Staff II 4300 woods with a "fancy face" to speed up the process. $45 + shipping.....more than I'm used to paying. But as I mentioned, got some time constraints.

Thanks! The bag belonged to a local pro who took the stitching with his name off...but still it's sweet, especially for $7. I bought the irons on the bay' after finding the bag. I wish I had found them together...but it makes for a nice set.

The head covers for $1.95 is a score. Good luck on the woods.

I picked up a Callaway Staff bag from the GW a while back. Think I paid 11 bucks for it. Amazing what you can get there at times. My best haul was a set of Titleist 680's and 7 Vokey's all at the same location, same day. Cost me 3.99 per wedge and 19.99 for the set. Had fun listing them on the Bay!

Btw, if you come across a Toney Penna TP201 6-iron, let me know. I need it to complete my set..

Bought these for $20. 2-9 Powerbilt Levelume's along with Citation 3 and 5w's and a Wilson Medalist PW

Pretty dirty with some surface rust. Grips are old and cracked. Gave them a quick clean and hit some on the range.

The shafts must be close to Regular as I had no problem hitting them and they felt pretty good. The Medalist felt heavier and stiffer.

Did not hit any good shots with the woods. Would need some practice with them!
