No new acquistions...?

Chatting with oldsters at the range, eh?

Maybe part of my issue is I live in "Thrifty Manitoba" which means high level pickins' are very slim.

For older stuff, the best I've found locally are my Honey-Boys (a one in 1,000 event), and my FG-17s. Occasionally a set of Hogan PCs might pop up, but everything here is pretty much Wilson, Northwestern, and Campbell "department store junk". Then again, the number of high-end pro shops was very low for years, and municipal golf was what was played by the masses here. So, most old clubs are municipally oriented.

That's OK anyways - time for me to live vicariously through the hoarding exploits of others.

Money + Nice Weather + Settled Earlier = Better Vintage club selection

Because I have the TM-92s on their way, I'm thinking I need a '92 vintage driver to team with them.

What say you all about Wood Bros. Cool Kats? The Texans are nice, and well above my price range, but there are certainly affordable Cool Kats out there.

Or, what other suggestions might one have?

Nice, but all on eBay right now are pretty pricey.

Though I did stumble across an auction with persimmony-looking Maxfli drivers that apparently have heads made out of carbon fiber.

At a reasonable price for the 3, I had to pick them up, especially as the auction was ending in three minutes.

Now a Tad SW and LW and a Maxfli staff bag and I'm good as gold.

Edit: LOL, since I said I'd quit hoarding, I've bought one set of irons, sold one set of irons, and now bought a woods set. FG-17s with woods to the 'Bay tonight.

Sold one and bought two (-1 + 2 = +1). :)

I recently bought a jigger for no reason as am happy w/ my 11 play clubs set. Oh God, I knew it would eventually happen after reading all these posts. I may need an intervention.

LOL, where else in the world except WRX can one go and see the following on a regular basis:

"I'm completely happy with my ________________, so I went out and bought a _____________."

But no, I am culling. The FG-17s and some WIlson woods to the 'bay. Likely my Maxfli fastbacks to a fellow wrx'er who'd like them. This leaves me the Radials, the TM-82, some Pings, and a set of Wright and Ditsons at the cottage. Maybe I should get rid of the Radials too, and go to the TMs and Pings, and the lake set. Hey, that sounds pretty good. And it will free up lots of room for more clubs.

NO! NO SCOOTER!

Nice clubs again, CC, though the black-faced Macs win hands down IMHO.

And just couldn't do it - took the FG-17 7i out and whacked a few balls with it. No way I can sell those.

Radials are all prettied up, and ready for their photo shoot.

Here is my Ben Hogan Macgregor Texan driver. Little damage to the insert but otherwise, really nice. Also is my set (driver, 3 & 4 woods), of Toney Penna Special Editions with aluminum inserts. These have the original SE leather grips in perfect condition. These are really nice. I have a new TP SE blonde, red fiber insert, still has tag on it too. Well I snuck out to the range and brought 6 irons of my M1MT, PT2 CF4000, and my Macgregor Tom Weiskopf Signature. First thing I noted was flight and distance. The PT2's flew the highest overall and as you might expect travelled shorter than the other two. The R1MT flew lowest and rolled out the furthest and the Weiskopf seemed to have the most penetrating flight, closer to my Hogan Redlines. I would say that each felt nice and other than the challenge of the older grips were not too difficult to hit but certainly not forgiving as today's market. I followed up hitting my callaway razr x-forged 6 iron which flew highest and easily out distanced the other three 6's. It was fun never the less...

Also took one of my gamer Penna Special Edition drivers (not previously shown..), and a Mac PT1 Tourney Velocitized 2-wood. Always a blast!!

Does anyone know any background or details on what a Toney Penna TP.TS 88? See pictures attached. My gut tells me it is a custom build for somebody with the initials TS done in 1988, but I am not a Private Investigator, so perhaps I am wrong..

Thanks!

Having trouble pinpointing it at the moment. What color is that insert? Any decals on the toe or side?

[/quote]Charlie will be the one to answer. It seems to me any custom Penna models had Toney Penna stamped on crown, not a decal, is this stamped?

Insert is black, 6 screws. Toney Penna is stamped on the crown.

Charlie, can you help identify this one?

Big coincidence!
I don't know who ts is, but I do know the club is special.
I have a set for sale today on thegolfauction site that is almost identical to that driver.
My set has never been struck and was a master model

The DFD was a jumbo driver, like the coveted M-09 LFF. If I remember your driver should be stamped either Toney Penna or Tommy Armour on the crown.
The Penna was model 106. Model 40 head with a 1-3/4 jumbo club face. The Armour is probably a model 108, jumbo head on a model 69 club head. I have the 106 Penna in eye-0-matic like yours. If you have another name on the crown, it was most likely a custom order.
Regardless, you have a great driver.

Just picked these up for $15. A little rough but going to try cleaning them up. Old Wilson Sam Sneed Signatures 2 - 9 irons, original leather grips..

Also got 13 Titleist tour balata balls for free and a Macgregor Tommy Armour Black Scott double duty wedge with the Sneeds..

As an extension from ^ on TP, would someone date the following TP 59 I've acquired. "Toney Penna" on crown is a decal. Barely been hit. Guessing late 80's early 90's. TIA.
