Sweet thrift store pickup MattB. Especially intrigued by those Muirfields. Look to be in very nice shape. However.....the bag.....looks a little modern. Nothing vintage around for their close-ups? Just say'in.

All the thrifts around these environs have shifted over to winter items. All I'm seeing are skis and hockey skates. The golf clubs have disappeared. Sigh, I do not like what this portends.

I am interested though in how the short game has evolved. I think it's fair to say that many people are trying to hit pitch shots now with more loft than they would have used in the past and I do think that there's a point where more loft becomes more trouble than it's worth for shots that could be played readily with an old-school PW or SW.
This is an interesting point, as I too have seen people pitching with a 60* wedge. Me, I always try to use the lowest lofted club that will do the job, so I rarely ever pitch with anything more than a PW. In fact, I have pitched and chipped with everything down to a 5i depending on course conditions etc.

Where I like the 60* wedge is in that awkward 50-70 yd range, a place I find myself in at times on very long par 4s. Nice to have a club I can still take a rip with and stop the ball on the green.

Actually I think my Wilson Harmonized wedge has to be close to 58* (by eyeball), but its large bottom flange and bounce make it a difficult tool to use in fairways.
Obviously, if it works, then stick with it.

Just playing devils advocate though - you've given the common justification for a 3rd, high-lofted, wedge - that you can take a full swing and hit the ball a shorter distance that would otherwise require a partial swing with a PW or SW.

There's an alternative school of thought (ie, not me, but people who get their opinions published properly) that this really only works well for better players who make very consistent contact with a 60* wedge.

Tom Wishon, in his fitting book, reckons that a partial swing with less loft is a much more reliable shot for the average player unless you're prepared to practice with the lob wedge A LOT. If you focus on the amount of spin you can generate, the a fuller swing with more loft makes more sense - but many players and coaches seem to find distance control easier with less swing and less loft - and perhaps a bit more roll out.

Terry Kohler also wrote what I thought was an interesting blog about Hogan and his wedge distances as published in Power Golf. SW was 40 yards and in - which suggests lots of part swings with a PW from outside of 40 yards. Makes sense of Hogan calling the PW his "Equalizer".

I'm a huge fan of partial shots with wedges, and even short irons. My usual 100 yard shot these days is a partial 9 iron (45°).

Had a 60* Lob in the bag for several years. Never did hit the thing very well. Not practicing with it....yes, no confidence with it......yes, considered it a special conditions club....yes. The only way I could execute a shot was with a full swing, anything less was a "chunk". Took it out and most likely never to return. Distance control was significantly improved by doing exactly what T.W. mentioned, learning to "feel" the shot using less swing. Never was much of a spin player to begin with. Opening a SW furnishes 90% of the shot capability of the Lob.

In fact, the club of choice for everything from 90 yards in to chip and run around the green is a 50* GW. Pitch with roll is a easier and more reliable method for managing my short game than lob and stop. My 2 cents.

B-S, NR, Fella, yes, I have tried both schools of thought - both the full 60* and the part PW. We'll just say that this year (a year with less golf) the full 60* has been more reliable than "feel" shots with my PW or my Mac 11i.

Scootre, that's one of the lovely aspects of this torturous game.

It's not one size fits all. :)

Agree re. wedges. Finding it hard to locate 49 and 56 degree slazenger wedges to complete the above set (my favourite wedge lofts). Meantime for a 49deg, I'm alternating Maxfli Auzzie blade and Hogan BH Grind; for the 56deg it's between an '87 Wilson Staff and a 200 series Vokey oilcan... Yep, the old set needs a more suitable bag haha - have just landed a non-branded dark blue vintage cart bag...

Here are a few new editions. Macgregor Tourney VFQ 1962 iron set with ceramic faces. Amazing condition except a partial issue with one end cap. Original leather grips are wonderful.

After several dry runs to Goodwill lately, I came upon this $5 purchase today. "Big Herb" is a persimmon driver with a graphite shaft by Bert Dargie in Memphis, TN. Dargie stamped the sole plates with dates and this one says 93. The shaft is a no-name graphite; the shaft band reads "Dargie Golf Memphis, TN". Overall, the club is in pretty good shape and I am eager to give it a spin on the course.

As many of you know, Bert Dargie was a semi-custom guy out of Memphis who did some work for the pros who would frequent the Memphis tournament. I am not completely knowledgable about Mr. Dargie, but he was fairly poplular at least in the Mid-south.

It will at the earliest opportunity!
