Swing consistency struggle!!!

I like most struggle with my swing at times. I works on my swing mostly at home on a little range that I have. It's about 150 yards. Mostly wedges and an occasional 9 iron. My struggle is this. I seem to have a different swing every day. The swing thoughts I have are all over the board from old swing instruction (SLICEFIXER) to comments I read here on the board in the swing instruction. I can go play one day and everything clicks shoot 66-70 then a week later shoot 85 not knowing where the ball is going. I have been consistent at times for long periods but I'm not sure why I was consistent. But lately it seems to be like the up and down roller coaster mentioned above. I hit balls daily, maybe 75-125. Wedges mostly. Full, 3/4 and half. What my question is, why does there always seem to be a swing key that I have to have in my head to make this work like I want it to? Keep in mind it's the right swing thought with the 66-70 and the wrong one on the 85. If I'm just ok I'll shoot around 74. The 85's only show up about once or twice a month. I play about 12 times a month. Another question I have is my son had the same instruction I had but he's 25 years younger doesn't think about anything, nothing just hit the ball and it goes with a nice little draw. I use to kick his butt but that seems to be going away with my inconsistency. Any help would be appreciated. Not really instruction but more psychological I think.

Das,

The thoughts I had when reading your post lead me to ask questions more than offer suggestions.... or perhaps a touch of both.

What do you feel like you control? Specifically, do you vary the 85 yard shot from the 60 yard shot via the same swing but choking down more or less? Do you make such adjustments based on the old "clock-face" thing whereby the backswing for one yardage goes to 9 o'clock, and the next ten yards is at 11 o'clock? Do you have the same basic swing for everything like this and just swing harder or easier?

To me, however you personally answer the above questions... is where the answer is. There should probably only be one or two things you control... and I would personally think it "should be" the clock-face and/or coke-down thing... with tempo and basic setup remaining consistent. It would seem that if the tempo stays the same, and the setup is basically the same, the ball position and a few minor tweaks would take care of trajectory... The list of what you are "controlling" is really narrowed down to how you set up and how far back you take it. There are a few minor things in practice I personally have to watch -- like making sure I turn the belly and chest through such shots (as I can get a little too "armsy" with short approaches.) But there is a small list of things I try to "control" other than the choke-down, and how far back I take the club. I "might" tend to purposefully add a little bounce by opening the club a touch in my grip, but I don't over think such things. For me, its getting the sternum and setup alignments up and running consistently and that's where I try and go on auto-pilot.

Perhaps I'm wrong but a multitude of swing thoughts and considerations would become more about putting things on auto-pilot. Example: This shot (hypothetical) is my stock 54 degree with normal setup and tempo... no choke-down and swinging back to 9 o'clock. That shot is my PW with the ball a little back in the stance and my 11'oclock swing... again at normal tempo.

Hope I didn't seen to minimize or underestimate the issues you've probably been through a thousand times. This is just what jumped off the page at me. Hope it is taken in the spirit it is given and I wish you the best with it.

Oh and one last question... just curious.... spending this much time with the shorter clubs in practice... how do you keep the longer game tuned up so well? (no agenda, just asking)

On the full swing apparently it doesn't translate to the full swing very well on the higher scores. The I do hit the different wedge distances and I do it with the clock face roughly. It's mainly swing thoughts that mess me up. Several I guess. I warm up before I go play at home and it usually translates ok to very well but it seems to be a different thought depending on what I'm reading or which direction the ball goes. I'll reread your post again and ponder a few more answers.
