All Things Michigan Golf....the Mulligan (MOD EDIT: NO POLITICS, NO COVID-19, NO ECONOMICS)

Hey, cool thread! I'm a West Sider myself; got my start playing at Rolling Hills in Hudsonville, played a few summers at Maple Hill in Grandville, and shot one round at Wallinwood Springs that would've let me walk onto the varsity golf team had I not pendulumed the other way with one of the worst rounds of my life on the first day of tryouts. I'm lucky to get more than a few rounds in per year, these days. But, I'm hoping to get out and practice a little before this fall's church outing...this summer's been an absolute blur, and I honestly haven't had time for any hobbies (let alone golf).

Can't give enough praise for Diamond Springs being 30-35 minutes south of GR. A hidden gem down in Hamilton. Just played it again today and although I played poorly I still enjoyed the design! A fun track for a fairway finder.

Metro Detroit golfers, come out and play the Ben Davis Detroit Open Championship at Rackham on Sept 14th and 15th.

Rackham greens have gotten a lot of attention and are in good shape. The course improvements/renovations continue.

I'll be there!

I was cleaning out my golf bag today, and among the miscellaneous sundries I uncovered was this scorecard from Boyne Monument:

https://i.imgur.com/QbzgBjT.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/7XRRBZK.jpg

I went up there for a golf weekend with my department at work back in 2016...All the execs owned one (or more) homes around Boyne Mountain, and went up there just about every weekend. Naturally, they all teamed up and got something stupid like -10 in the scramble. We scored approximately atrociously, but most of us were nursing hangovers (I was in the best shape out of our entire team, due to the fact that I wasn't doing Jager and rum shots all night; only beers).

Also uncovered were some ball markers from a few now-defunct golf courses, an entire sleeve of logo'd Wilson Smartcores from a different work golf outing, and no less than 3 golf gloves.

Probably a little late for your trip, but my group played The Tribute at Otsego earlier this month.

We played 5 courses in the greater Gaylord area and Otsego was by far in the worst shape.

There were 4 or 5 greens that were in really bad shape with a couple being nearly unplayable (mostly burnt / dead).

I will say that they tried to keep the pins out of the dead areas for the most part and all the other greens were in Ok shape.

This is an awesome piece of property, and I get that they were closed for most of last year, but we paid double to play there versus any other course on the trip.

I talked to the GM about it and she gave me serious attitude.

To me it's probably not worth what they are charging for it. I would wait until they have had more time to recover.

Most of the guys on the trip agreed that we would have been better off playing one of the other courses for less $$$$

Yeah, we jsut got back. Ostego wasn't in the greatest shape. It was a warm up round so we just cared about getting out there and having fun. Greens had quite a few dead spots throughout the course.

Forest Dunes and the Loop were in perfect shape. FD is clearly the better of the 2 courses in terms of layout, but man, I relly enjoyed the loop, just a fun course.

We also played Tree Tops Premier and Signature. Premier was too "tricked" up for me, all of us prefered the Signature course.

You should have played the RTJ Masterpiece at treetops. Very challenging and definitely the other top option there.

Sucks to hear about Otsego, was really hoping it would have bounced back with the new ownership but thanks for the report just the same.

Agree with 1PuttTut, I really enjoyed the Masterpiece when we played it earlier this year. Fun course, challenging, good views, once super tricked up.

Ohioan coming in peace... Played Harbor Shores today, really enjoyed it. Greens were in great shape and as crazy as i knew they would be. The dunes holes were pretty awesome. Good bit of rain the night prior had it playing a touch soft but not bad at all, bunkers were being worked on as we played. Glad i played it, maybe not quite worth the price tag but i would pay it again.

I plan on making a phone call tomorrow, but I figure I'd ask here first: Is Greywalls in Marquette open to the public? If yes, can I just walk onto the course, or do I need to call and reserve a tee time? If that's the case, I don't have a golf partner this weekend...anyone feel like joining?

Grey walls is open to public. I would recommend calling first. I have yet to play there, but have heard it is amazing.

My wife's running the marathon this weekend up there, and Marquette is dear to our hearts (we met up there in college), so we always try to make a trip or two every year. This is the first year where time and finances will allow me to bring my clubs! So, it's either Marquette Golf Club or the NMU Golf Course, but I definitely want to get a few swings in.

You'll get a lot of mixed reviews on this one but IMO Dunmaglas sucks. Over priced due to being in a high dollar town. Range is literally an overgrown field and conditions are mediocre at best.

I don’t think there are mixed reviews. Pretty much everyone agrees it sucks.

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
