All Things Michigan Golf....the Mulligan (MOD EDIT: NO POLITICS, NO COVID-19, NO ECONOMICS)

I got my bag out of storage Easter weekend and I’m making a 2020 bag from stuff around. I keep my gamer bag in Louisiana and only bring it to Michigan for tournaments.

Leader of the pack Michigan Bag

TS3 10.5 with Mitsubishi XT 60. Just a forgiving rocket of a club. My sim is longer and more forgiving bit the TS is very solid.

16.5 915f with Fujikura Pro95 regular flex. That’s right regular flex in the pro 95 is money for me, tipped 1 inch.

need something in this spot. Have a 5 wood epic flash with ventus and a 915 the small headed one with Fujikura Trti46, or a tour m4 18 deg with some cool shaft

irons for sure will be my Miura PP-9003 straight necks with Steelfibers

wedges right now I think I have a miura k grind 51 and a pp-9003 to battle out the gap wedge. SW PXG forged 56 or a Scratch Golf Ryan Moore 55 deg. LW I might go without, or pick up a 58 around

putter, was bb1 flow neck carbon last year, it picked up a bit of rust in storage. I have a Dass bb1 stub neck I’ll probably swap it out.

ball for sure the new Bridgestone I’m using.

new balance shoes need replacing might grab another pair they are solid.

Is anyone else tweaking their bag?

I had 21/24/27* H1’s last year, I’m trying a 21* TS2 7 wood and a 24* sim hybrid. Still have the 27*. If I had to tee it up in a tourney tomorrow they would make the cut, we’ll see if it’s a honeymoon period. The 7 wood especially is working great. Pretty bummed about how the season is going so far, I’m playing better early this year then ever.

My bag is staying pretty stable from last year to this spring. The biggest change is my new Byron, which I had built late last year, though that is very similar to the B-17 I used last year -- just a different finish, and it's a little more upright. I also put in a new 52 degree wedge, which seems to be going about 5 yards farther, which fits the gap between PW and 58* wedge a little better. All other heads are staying the same. I switched driver shafts from the Rogue Silver to the Ventus Black. The only other change is that I got a couple of new headcovers from Seamus -- one with the logo of my favorite course in the world (Royal Dornoch). This is probably the least change I've made from year to year in the last decade.

Are u just playing PW, 52, 58?

I will be buying new wedges once miles opens and we can get fit again. My gapping from 9i down is a mess.

I'm thinking of a 7 wood option, but what do you think it replaces, the 21 deg hybrid? 4 iron carry length?

Thanks

Yeah, most of the time. I occasionally will go with only one club between driver and 3-iron (one of 3 wood, 4 wood, or driving iron), and put in a 62* wedge. I don't do that very often, because the 62 is really a specialty club that I only really use around the greens, because I'm not too confident with it on full swings. I can only hit it about 75 yards, and I'd usually rather take something off a 58 and hit it in low. I only really ever use this setup on a course like Washtenaw. The tee shots there set up where I usually hit driver on most holes, and the holes that are forced layups off the tee call for a 3 or 4 iron, so I don't need a ton of other options off the tee. The par 5s there are generally not reachable in 2 for me, other than the first one, which I can usually get to with a 4-5-6 iron with a decent tee shot.

Most of the time, though, I would rather have more options in the longer clubs, because I'm pretty comfortable with distance control hitting less than 100% shots with wedges, and I'm a lot better at those kinds of shots than trying to do that with a long iron or wood.

Its slightly longer than the hybrid I had before but that’s fine. I don’t hit the ball very high so based on that alone I picked up a little distance. I’m probably ~215 with it, 230 with a 4 wood and the 24* goes 205. I went a lot shorter and with an 80 gram shaft to make up for it, if you look at my recent posts check the thread about being fit at titleist by another remember. I basically copied their idea and it’s been good, shorter and heavier is making the ball go way straighter.

Wedges can be tough depending on what the loft on your irons are. Both loft on irons and length of woods has gotten crazy. I went to a 50* Ap2 as my gap wedge a year or so ago and love it.

Forgot I also have some other stuff that was built for fun. I have black new level heads that are getting MMT graphite shafts and did two new sets of identical scratch 56/60 to what I play now. One has the Masters Nippon wedge shaft, the other I went with lime green/black Accra shafts. They are obnoxious and mainly for fun so I can have an all graphite setup sometimes, and they are absolutely terrible haha. I duffed every chip for two rounds and they are sitting in permanent timeout, waste of $400.

Yeah, iron lofts make a big difference. My 3 iron that I carry is 22*, which is the same loft as a lot of people's 4 irons, and I have a 48* PW, which is why I can get away with with just two additional wedges. If I were buying new irons, I'd probably be looking at the Ben Hogan Icons, both because I think they look amazing and because they have 4 degree loft progression from 22* 4i through 46* PW. I could then go with a 50-54-58 wedge setup, which on paper seems like it would be good gapping. It probably wouldn't make much of a difference having an extra couple of yards of gaps between the longer clubs (the gaps between my 3-4-5 irons are 3*), and I could reset to a little tighter gapping in the wedges. But I'm not getting rid of my irons anytime soon, so whatever.

Play it regularly. I hate it. Course just doesnt fit my game. Too many weird tee shots for my liking. Much prefer the Blue course (UMGC).

I agree with the wolverine above. Definitely prefer the UMGC to Radrick, though I have only played Radrick once.

How many private courses does UM have? Snobs.

Both of MSU’s courses are public. Just saying.

Lol. The Blue course is technically open to the public for a ridiculous daily package fee. So I guess you could say 1.5.

Cant disagree with the practice environment. Conditioning is hit or miss. Sometimes the Blue course greens are more abused from pitch marks that pi$$es me off. I have never found pace to be that big of an issue. They already run at 12 min tee times. It just gets more play than Radrick.

I've never found any Pete Dye courses (the very few I've played) to be all that much fun to play. He was kind of a dick.
