Brandel's Got Something Else to Say...

I guess Phil is on Brandel's sh!t list this go-round. For someone who had far less than mediocre tour success (in comparison to his star subjects), he's sure got a lot of opinion.

Thanks for the link!

I have to disagree though. I see the main point of the story as factual--did Watson solicit input or not? Unfortunately, the post morteum on the 2014 RC has devolved to a dissection of Watson's captaincy.

If Brandel has these facts, he almost has to come public with them, it's certainly his job, but more importantly IMO its becoming part of the historical record on the 2014 RC.

The second part of the article, re Phil and the 10 RCs, and accountability and looking in the mirror is opinion. He's a commentator, paid to give opinions however. It's a valid POV in my estimation, regardless if made by him, a writer or anyone really. (He does have a point).

I do think BC is miffed at Phil for a snarky comment Phil made about BC's playing ability tho.

Brandel Chamblee is the Maury Povich of golf. Drama sells, and that clown rakes the media muck all he can to make a name for himself at this point.
He's firmly in my "ignore" list. When the day comes golf drama is so over the top they need to start paternity testing everyone to see how many tour wives are bearing DJ's love child, Brandel will be there offering to do the paternity tests. He's a joke.

Kevlar strapped on.

I'm a fan of Brandel. He does a lot of research and always has his numerical facts on point. HOWEVER...be a man when you're wrong, own the statements you make, take a deep breath and say, "I was wrong." People will respect that and think a bit more of him than they do now.

I guess BC rubs people the wrong way. (I don't think about him enough to care either way). In this case however, for the life of me I can't see how this:

“I know for a fact that all the players were brought together with their caddies and Tom walked amongst them and said, ‘Tell me who you want to play with. Write it down on a sheet of paper, and all of you tell me who you want to play with. Let me know.’ And everyone but one person contributed there.
“So what Phil said was not, in fact, true. They were allowed to contribute – and who they played with was pretty much the way Paul Azinger went about his captaincy.”

Is not relevant to golf discussion in the aftermath of the RC loss?

Is not important information? Would it have been better if Feinsten or Rossie reported it? Maybe both of those guys were afraid to say it for fear of angering Phil or the other players? In which case, I would give BC some respect for cojones?

The guy is paid to run his mouth and stir things up. Golf Channel has A LOT of air time to fill, they have to argue about things. If everybody just said the same thing, it would be really short and boring segment. I'm betting these guys plan out these "discussions" before hand and decide who is going to take each side. TV is not a real organic process.

Brandel Chamblee is great when he talks about golf. He knows the numbers....or at least has one heck of a good researcher behind him. Either way his discussions regarding golf...are informative and entertaining for the most part.

When he talks about golfers....that's when he starts rubbing me the wrong way. His reference to Watson being “unfairly denigrated”? Aside from some misinformed, over the top and frankly brain dead comments I have read and seen regarding Watson and his ability to be a captain....I don't see that Phil or anyone else (from a professional golf standpoint), as having denigrated Watson, unfairly or otherwise.

Chamblee seems to enjoy his position as moral compass of the golf world. Where he loses credibility with me is that if his job is to in fact report what he believes to be the truth..."I know for a fact....<fill in the blank>", then do so without all the bluster and well...denigration.

He makes a point of pointing out what he feels is unfair treatment....which he referred to as "taking shots" at Watson, and follows it up with a comment about Phil being on the last 10 Ryder Cups, and they lost 8. Again....and I am speaking *my* opinion here....it's hard to swallow some of what he says, when he gives a wonderful impression of standing on moral high ground to defend Watson....while taking a swipe at Phil at the same time.

Like I said....I like it when he talks Golf.

Lesser people have had greater opinions on whatever subject they talk about. To say that you have to have a pedigree to say anything is a bit much, and would be very boring.

As Chuck said, there isn't anyone better when he sticks to discussing the statistical side of golf and the game itself - he and Nobilo are the best.

However, he is just as terrible as he is good when he gets into this petty mood and goes after players. I have no problem with him having an opinion on a player, but he gets on it a rides it for months.

I'll be willing to bet that he sticks with this Phil thing until his favorite lighting rod returns at the beginning of next year.

I agree to some extent with what Johnny says here -
“That could have stayed within the walls of the PGA [of America], so to speak,” Miller said.
But maybe this has been being said within the walls of the PGA only to continue to fall on deaf ears. Maybe Phil was sick of the players being ignored by Bishop and his crew.

I have to agree the Brandel can be annoying with his opinions on certain subjects and whether agree or disagree he reserves the right to say what he wants and I don't want to take sides .... but I thought Phil could have been more discreet with his comments and gave his opinion about the Ryder cup to Tom Watson in private versus spewing them to the mainstream media , maybe Tom may have earned the right to not be hammered in public and I am not sure if Phil proved anything by his actions

There were a lot more decisions made at Gleneagles than "who do you want to play with?". If the players didn't think they were part of the decision process, then they probably weren't. That wouldn't have been a big deal if they had won. Personally, I think the Euros had better players, and that's why they won. No matter who was on the American team, no matter who was paired with who, the other team still had the better players. It would have been an upset had the Americans won. Sure, it could have happened. It's golf.

As far as BC... he's opinionated and he's a lightening rod. I'm not sure how informed his opinion is if he's not talking to the players themselves. I don't hear him quoting players, so I assume that they don't like him enough to talk to him. He's probably got a relationship with Watson that goes back to when he was on tour. I don't mind him sticking up for Watson. It certainly wasn't all Watson's fault that the US lost. Watson didn't hit a single shot. We need to develop better players.

The truth is that he is only saying what everyone else is thinking.

Mickelson was totally out of order with his comments in public , they should have been said in private between Watson and himself .

Brandell is a journalist and a critic and that is how he makes his living.

For you Gentlemen who say he was not a good player please tell me when you played the PGA Tour and did you ever win ?

You do not have to do that to have an opinion or to be payed for it . If you did there would be very few golf reporters.

By the way , Mickelson is not in the same league as Tom Watson as a golfer or a Gentleman.

He whines more than my mother in law , but so does Azinger and that is maybe why he wants him back.

Phil Mickelson is not a sportsman , he needs to go have a lesson with Jack Nicklaus for that .
