What's the saying....."if you can't play, go teach." I guess BC thought that meant to criticize as a commentator.
He's the Roger Ebert of golf.
No, not even close.
Yeah Brandel probably did have a better career as a Pro golfer than Ebert did as a director.
One was a Pulitzer Prize winning author. The other does TMZ like commentating after rounds of golf.
I was replying to a post referring to BCs playing career.

Brandel most certainly opens himself up for criticism when he stretches the truth to make his point (and I think I'm being kind with that characterization). He made the statement in the wake of the infamous press conference that "(Phil) changed clubs the week of the Ryder Cup in 2004!"

I don't have an exact date of when the official announcement was made regarding the switch from Titleist to Callaway, but I attended the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey that year, 2 weeks prior to the Ryder Cup, (http://espn.go.com/g...ule/_/year/2004), and I distinctly recall seeing him on the range, working with his then-coach Rick Smith and the Callaway equipment.

He actually didn't even replace all of the clubs - "Mickelson will use a Callaway ball, a Callaway driver and Callaway fairway woods at the Ryder Cup, but he will keep his Titleist irons in his bag."

Ebert's career has always been writing. To paraphrase my earlier post, not even close of a comparison.

Still trying to make a terrible comparison I see? Brandel's main career was a golf; Ebert's was a writer. Ebert was never a director. Poor comparison with made up facts.

I looked it up - when I was young(er) Siskel kidded Ebert more than once about his 1 or 2 movies and they even showed clips. Awful stuff. They implied he was the director. He was in fact the screen writer. I guess he was a great writer, just not a great screen writer.

My apologies - he was not the director of bad movies.

Still, BC's fair to middling playing career shouldn't be the standard to which his golf writing career is judged. Personally I've never read anything BC has written that was very compelling. I'd say that whether he'd won 1 tournament or 100.

OK, as a recap, if he's criticizing "a certain golfer," he's a golfing genius. If he's criticizing Phil, he's clearly a hack. I get it now.

He's gotten everyone to pay attention to him, at the expense of some people saying they don't like him. He's a talking head on a tv show, gimme a break. All the drama surrounding the US failure of the Ryder Cup just seems a bit predictable and disingenuous to the European team. Chamblee is working for the sponsors of the network, not to deliver 'hard hitting, powerful golf journalism' . Take the blinders off, it's all devolved into American style politics, the Phil vs the Watson party.

Seems a pathetic commentary for us in this country as we seem to have devolved into a group who can't process either personal criticism or criticism of those who we look up to.

One thing is certain when it comes to TV analysts like Brandel Chamblee and Johnny Miller, and that is the more that people talk about them, complain about them, and/or compliment them, the better their job security becomes. This tells Golf Channel and NBC that you are watching their telecasts and that is their primary goal. I think it goes without saying that these analysts intentionally make controversial statements about any subject in order to rile people like the people on this forum which in effect, enhances their stature with their employer. The worst thing that could happen to them would be if nobody said anything at all about them.

It's impossible anymore to know what Chamblee's actually passionate about vs what he does to cause controversy to keep TGC happy. Shame as his integrity is shot for the almighty dollar.

I don't agree with everything Mr. Chamblee says, but on the other hand he does offer some very cogent commentary. And, he also played the game. There are many commentators in a variety of sports who never played the sport they venture their opinions on.

So you don't agree with Mr. Chamblee says? Fine. That doesn't make him an evil person.

They never implied he was a director, they joked often about his writing and his Russ Meyer connection.

No big deal.

Still, Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls is a bad movie, but I can't help watching it.

I have always thought it strange when in a post it is pointed out that someone who is paid to give a professional opinion is discounted because they had less than a career than those they are commenting on.

It is kind of like saying I don't listen to my Doctor because he/she has never had experienced the cancer I have. Or, my mechanic can't help my sluggish car because he has never been a race driver.

Lets assume just for argument that Brandon must have been a fairly good professional golfer, he was a tour player so he couldn't have been too bad. We read what Golf writers say in Golf Digest and never question whether they ever played on the tour. Yet, they comment on the greatest players of the game and rarely receive our ire.

We all of course have our opinions on various subjects, some of which we have real knowledge, and often on things we have no real knowledge. We obviously are not going to agree with everything Brandon has to say, but maybe should acknowledge that he has real insight and must not be a complete idiot or he would not have been hired as a commentator.

Concerning Phil, he could have picked better timing with his opinion. On the other hand it has been reported that several of the Players were very upset with the way Watson captained the team.........and I believe the "Captained" is an over statement. He didn't engage the players and should be taken to task, however, it could have been done better.
Just because a player has/had a great career does not mean they automatically know how to lead or follow. That goes for Phil and Tom, neither showed much class IMO.

agree with you dave 100%.... I think he is spot on at times with his Xs and Os and stats....But if your wrong you should just say so, then shut up..... I will say however that I agree with him 100% on the tiger swing critique... when hes right hes hard to get along with for sure.... in that case he was right... Now others may have a point on things being jerry springer like at times...BUT look at what we have to compare him too.... surely you don't want to see some of the Morning Drive clowns?

I think that Chamblee has too high of an opinion of himself and his opinion, and once he takes a stance on something he won't let it go. I feel like it makes his opinion less valuable, I respect someone who can see and report things from all angles, BC gets on his high horse and wont get off until NBC shoots it out from under him.

I think a lot of you guys are failing to consider the business side of Golf Channel and how Brandel Chamblee is a genius right now in his on camera antics. Sporting television is becoming a huge business and there is a real lack of tv personalities for the game of golf. Now that fox, espn, cbs and nbc are all covering golf this means guys like Brandel services are in high demand and what better way to negotiate a bigger contract and increase your tv presence than by becoming the most talked about commentator. Forgot that he wasnt that good of a pro that is the stupidest arguement that he cant know what he was talking about because he didnt win multiple majors. The guy is exceptionally good behind the camera and knows exaclty what he is doing everythime he has something to say whether you agree or not.

I question whether he knows any of this "as fact". If you were a player on tour, would you tell him anything? Maybe he is generally liked? I honestly don't know.

I'm sick of the 'he just says what everyone else is thinking!' angle on this. People use the same defense for Miller.

That isn't commendable. It's easy to do and unless you're 8 years old it's a very good way to become known as an asshat.

That said, I blame the "golf channel" for this stuff more than I do any particular commentator. I mean, I love the idea of a network devoted to golf. But it means they NEED to be talking about something ALL THE TIME.

The last time I turned it on I saw 4 grown men in suits analyzing the ease with which Tiger was able to change his shoes in the parking lot. They have to fill the air. Chamblee is not in a position where can just say nothing about it....he's going to make something out of it, because that is why his job exists. For him, what he actually says is not as important as the fact he is saying something.
