It just me or are a lot of pros switching to Nippon Iron Shafts?

So I've got Mizuno JPX 900 Tour heads coming in, but I need a shaft to pair it up with. I've hit the S300s and the 105Xs but really didn't love either shaft. The 105s are too light for me and I've had better results with KBS than with DG shafts over the years.

Driver is around 108-112mph and 7i about 90mph. I'm leaning towards 125Xs right now, but I am considering 125Ss as well. Is the X Flex in the 125s going to be too much shaft for me? The KBS shafts I'm gaming are clearly not a great fit for my swing now, but have been serviceable. Maybe I should soft step the X's...thoughts?

To me...the Steelfiber 110 Stiff straight in feel more stout (boardy) than the 130s Stiff straight it.

I won't get another set with SteelFiber 110s...or Modus 120s.

I will likely get another set with 130s.

Sec-Ede - Really Appreciate all the very solid advice

on the the SF - if i could, any commentary on ball flight (workability, height, etc) vs the 130s

the 105 seems to have more dispersion issues even in a X-flex from what i have heard

Just looking for more of what i can expect when i ditch the SF 100icw's i have for 130s

thank you again

When I had the 105 in my irons the only time I had dispersion issues was when I got out of rhythm and would get too quick. If you keep your tempo then you won't have any issues with the 105's

when I hit the 105 vs. 120, I ended up getting more above the plane line coming down. I think the added weight in the 120 helped keep my club below the plane line coming down to the ball from the top. Really wish the 105 could have worked since I could get some more clubhead speed with it but hit the 120 much better.

I think the whole 120 hosel rocket thing is in people's heads now.

I agree. My gf thinks I'm a nutcase. In the end, I still hosel rocket them and I will be moving on for my own mental reasons. Haha

FWIW....

Last winter, I took my Modus 130 shafted blade 8 iron to the heated staff driving range. Was hitting my regular clubs, Ram Tour Grinds with Super Peening Blues, the SPBs being a new reshaft, looking to get ready for the impending season.

Grabbed the 130 shafted 8 iron, first swing, shank. Hit another, almost off the hosel. Hit another, shank. I think I hit it 7 or 8 times, and shanked three of those.

All about how the feel of the shaft load affects one's swing. :)

100% correct. I keep saying that you need to have a smooth tempo in order to play the 105. It's such an easy shaft to load so if you have a fast tempo, your dispersion is going to increase. Once you understand and get used to how the shaft loads, it damn near does all of the work for you.

Such a smooth effortless shaft.

My flight on the SteelFiber 110 was lower overall in all irons than both 105 and 130.

Like I said before, for me, the 105x tended to curve more than SteelFiber or the 130s..

I didn't particularly like the SF 110s...I thought they were boardy feeling...but that's just me.

Initially I had a set of PING i25s with the 130s...and the 1st day I had them at the range I was standing on my 4 irons...swinging out of my shoes...and the ball just wanted to go high and straight. I made the mistake of selling those irons...tried to buy them back...and the guy I sold them to said no way he's selling them.

I landed on AP2s with DG Pros b/c they give me decent height with the long irons, and I hit them about a 1/2 club to a club farther than the 130s in my AP2s.

Before ditching your current gamer shafts...test out a 6 iron or 7 iron.

If you like them...shaft up the rest of the set.

appreciated - I will be doing exactly that with 6 and 8 irons - thanks again

Wow

Is this the Norm with most Shafts 98 Grams or 115 Gram the Best choice..

does this Shaft Flex a Lot

It just depends on your swing. Technology has gotten to a point where lighter shafts no longer mean high launch and high spin. Yes, the lighter shafts tend to have a little more flex than the heavier ones.

In regards to the 95, it was just too light for my liking.

With the 105, it's easy to overload so I'd recommend a smooth tempo. If your tempo is not smooth and you have a high swing speed, your dispersion could increase due to over flexing. Once you get used to how the shaft loads, it will do most of the work for you.

You are starting to see a lot of tour pros gravitate towards lighter shafts due to the increase in swing speed.

Still bewildered why the modus 130s gets such a bad rap and is played by so few

Shouldn't Every late release/lag swinger be using this shaft?

Does anyone know a player on tour using it?

Plenty of players here extoll it's virtues

I am about to have a 105x ssx1 vs 130s shoot out - already thinking 130 will win out when i go after it

Keeping left away and getting the apex up are the keys i seek

Any insights to why so may shy away

Anyone have another shaft i can throw into the shootout?

thank you

There has been a recent move to lighter shafts on tour. That's the only reason I can explain it. Also, the 130 is a high launch shaft. Not many tour players need the extra launch nor are many looking for a high launch shaft.

I too was scared about the stoutness of the 130. I have them in X, I don't know my CHS with a 6 iron but it's my 190 club. My transition is smooth, slower overall tempo as well. I was playing S300 before. I will say the 130 do launch high, but I also launched the S300 high too. Biggest difference is to me is the 130's just want to go straight. I had a pretty big draw with the S300's. I can still hit a draw with the 130's if I need to. As far as weight goes, they feel lighter (to me) than S300's, perhaps it's the slight counterbalance.

I play in wind basically all year here, maybe June and July aren't as windy. The ball flight with the 130's is up and out, meaning, it's get up and goes. High without ballooning, at least for me. I'm also able to flight it down. I can't say enough good things about this shaft, and I will never switch again. Of course everyone swings differently so YMMV. Hope this helped a little haha!
