It just me or are a lot of pros switching to Nippon Iron Shafts?

Little help on shaft and flex on the Modus 3. I have done well with PX5.5 and S400 (little heavy) and love the DI, Blueboard and NV in wood shafts. S300 I hit too high, poor dispersion and a lot of spin. X100 is about right traj wise, dispersion good, but I don't load them and are a touch heavy (same for PX 6.0 except the weight bit)

I play my irons 3/4" over Titleist MB standard lengths.

Based on what I have read, I am assuming 120 stiff, straight in, would work, but wonder if playing them over length by 3/4" would suggest a stiffer flex.

Any ideas?

Same guy here - if I go 120s and play over length of Titleist MB standard by 3/4 inch, since I read they are tip heavy, am I going to get a crazy high SW? I like something around D4. Afraid 120s might come out D8 or so. What do you think?

Maybe also check out the 105 in X? Will help to keep your overall weight down, given the +0.75".

Tough to find the shafts to hit without buying some samples. Have a spot where I can demo 105s and a 120s and other shafts for $50 - may do that.

Definitely hit the 120x and 120tx before making decision my SS is 90 with 6 iron I play the 120x hit stock 9 iron 150 yds with nice piercing flight, nippons are a different breed but once you get used to them you can hit it low or high and they dont overspin

Thanks, Fujiman. I will try them if I get access. I am not as long as you - looks like I am one club shorter than you at least with my current setup with Padersons. If I like the 120 profile, I think I may be a SS 120x, but, that is a total WAG off what I have been reading.

So, I am in the vicinity of PX 5.5 and S400 in shaft stiffness. S400 probably my favorite of the two, but, both work. My Paderson graphite are X but not sure how that compares in flex to others, but, supposed to be low flighted which I in Paderson is high kick and stiff tip. I have moderately aggressive swing (per a fitter), a mid tempo, strong release and swing 6 iron in the mid to upper 80's (driver about 104). With the Mizuno optimizer my release factor was 3 - the full numbers were 5 2 6 3 and 6 2 7 3.

I am thinking of just getting some Maltby DBM heads (about 3) so I can build demo clubs to try these profiles out (even the Nippon certified fitter near me only had some 105s and a 120 stiff to try). To start with, I am thinking I would try, 120x, 130 Regular HS, and 125 stiff. Those are the weight shafts I think will work best for me.

Sound reasonable to you Modus aficionados for approximate right flexes so I can feel out the profiles?

Wanted to get the order in so I can try these Modus shafts pronto puppies. Went three, 6 iron Maltby DBM heads (similar to my MP64) with Modus 120X SS1, 130R HS1 and 125 stiff.

Looking forward to the experiment. My lighter weight graphite experiment wasn't terrible but wasn't good either - my GIRs have suffered which hasn't helped.

I didn't notice the 120s being tip heavy when I built mine. Took S300 out and replaced with 120X.

I've wondered about the stiff tip in the 120s and how it impacts toe droop. Does the stiff tip reduce it? If so, this could lead to pulls all else equal for someone's swing. I did order my Srixon's 1 degree flat, partly due to them coming 1/2 degree more upright vs what I was playing.

Funny you mention this. I showed the results of my lie angle testing to a friend who is a fitter at club champion, and he said toe droop (or lack thereof) was probably the reason for the conflicting results. I think the very stiff tip definitely reduces toe droop, especially in the shorter irons. You were probably wise to order flat. I think I'm going to bend AW through 8 iron 1 flat, and leave 7-4 alone. He did also say the profile of the 120 (specifically the soft butt) might just not work with my aggressive transition. I'm going to go see him at club champion next week...may end up switching to the 125S or starting over with a new set. 125 was Mark's recommendation for me to begin with, but Callaway doesn't offer them so I decided to give the 120X a shot. Let me know how the Srixon's work out. I do love the feel of the 120X and trajectory/spin is what I was looking for, but fighting a pull/draw in the short irons is no fun.

I have read here that guys seem to like the higher launch of the 130 in longer irons but not so much in the shorter irons. What about using 130 in say 3-6 and fit-to-flex 125s in 7-W? Similar weight but differrent profile and ball flights - 130 higher and 125 more mid traj. Think that could work? Or, do you think switching profile mid set would be too odd a transition? Anyone try this?

Just speculating ahead of actually hitting the shafts in ho fashion. ?

Got my first round in today with my new Srixon Z765 w/ Modus 125X shafts and RTX 3 w/ Modus 125 Wedge shafts. Didnt even hit them on the range before I went to the course. Coming from X-14 Pros w/ DG X100. All in all I hit them well. Think they feel a bit more lively than X100 and probably launch a bit higher. Have to hit them more to compare distance but it appeared similar. Agree with those who have said these shafts just want to go straight though. Felt dispersion was tighter with less tendency to curve offline.

Again, this could change next round but after round 1 they felt good.

Just an update, still liking 130S in my irons. Especially the long irons. Towering long irons that don't balloon and then stop dead on the green.

Not sure I particularly love the shaft in wedges though. Its OK, but ball flight is quite high for me. Think I will reshaft wedges with the Tour 125 wedge? That shaft is 9 grams heavier than the 130S, but not sure that would be a huge issue.

Mark or other Nippon experts.

Which shaft is closest to the Blueboard 70 stiff? I seem to like a decreasing flex from butt to tip like the Blueboard. In international flex code (first number butt and progressing to tip) (3-regular, 5-stiff; 7-xstiff, etc.) a Blueboard is about 6543.

Seems like I recall Mark saying if you like the Blueboard you will like the 125. Seems to match the EI on Nippon's site.

True?

I alway thought Blueboard is stiif butt, soft mid and stiff tip. White is soft butt, stiff mid and stiff tip. Redboard stiff butt, medium mid and soft tip.

From my "board" view, the 105 and 125 would be most Blueboard like.

Thanks for that info. Blueboard is stiff butt with gradually decreasing stiffness toward the tip - "smooth" profile as MRC calls it. It is definitely softer in the middle than the butt but the middle is not softer than the lower quarter of the shaft. Looking the Blueboard EI profile looks a lot like the Regio MB which Nippon says pairs with the 125 and 105, so hoping that is correct. Blueboards you can find pulls of for reasonable prices - not many Regio MB's around except at $200+ dollars per.

I like Blueboard and similar designs in wood shafts, and I like both Modus 125 and 130. You should probably try both.

This thread is great. A few months ago I was fit for 125's in stiff flex. I am still new to the game and continually progressing in efficiency and club head speed, still taking lessons.

Anyways, still love the 125's feel and ball flight (maybe too high?)but think I may be overpowering them in stiff flex. Fitted for driver, fw wood and hybrid all in xstiff more recently. Driver swing speed then was around 114.

From trackman I hit my 7 iron avg 177 carry, apex about 34 yards. A well hit drive for me is a tad over 300. That is nowhere near my avg but it hopefully gives an idea of clubhead speed. Recently got fitted for wedges and he put me in x100's and said I should consider reshafting my irons to x100 too as I was really bending my current shaft after he asked me to hit my 7 iron. My miss is getting quick in transition leading to a snap hook vs my usual draw.

Am I a good candidate for the 125's in x flex? I love the feel just think I may hit it high and tend to overdraw the ball if I get quick. Any downsides of moving to x flex aside from the cost? Thanks in advance!

I have the X soft stepped once and my SS isn't quite as high as yours (I'm at about 110 mph with driver).

If you need to lower your flight a good amount......perhaps consider the X100 tour issue shafts. I doubt going to X flex in the 125s will lower your ball flight much if any.

Gents,

Been a long time lurker on the forum and have read every post about the Modus line of shafts. If you don't mind helping me it would be appreciated. I am re-shafting my clubs, currently playing CTaper Lite Reg hsx1 in Z565. I found CTaper Lite Stiff too boardy, CTL R hsx1 "feels" ok but flights high. CTL R was erratic but "felt" great. I was professionally fit into the CTL Reg @ Club Champion early spring but my swing has gotten much more fluid and consistent. I am an excellent striker of the ball. Current setup CTL R hsx1 7 iron is 160 carry. I put a 120 into my PW ssx1 and it "feels" fantastic and my dispersion has come down. I have a 6i ss of 78-82 depending on the day and can step on it up to ~84/85 every once in a while. I do like the lighter swingweight of the CTL R hsx1 (D2) and my 120 ssx1 swingweighted to D2.5 in the PW. Would the 120S straight in be better than ssx1? Also, what about the 105?

I just moved from 716 AP2 AMTS300 to 716 AP2 Modus 120

the butt feels softer but amazingly I can control it better than the s300. It's much much easier to load, imho. And I love the flight.

Just got my demo clubs shafted and they are curing - can't wait to try them this weekend.

Best shafts for me thus far are PX 5.5 and S400. S300 too high and spinny. X100 - low dispersion, but, I didn't load well, lost some distance and height. Dabbled with Ctaper stiff but did not like feel at all - likely did not load them well. Also, using Paderson graphite in X now, and they are pretty good but lose a lot left and not in love with the feel.

Demo set are Maltby DBM 6 iron heads, all at 1/2 over Titleist (at 38 inches) are:

  • 130 R HS1 (38.5 inch)
  • 120 X SS1 (39.5 inch)
  • 125 S straight in (39 inch)

Have a 105 S HS1 waiting in the wings for whichever of the above is the hindmost for me in testing.

I picked these flexes based on reading about 2/3rds of this mega thread. Looking for mid to mid-high launch, moderate spin (I tend to spin it a fair amount), better dispersion and great feel. Not too much to ask...

Side effect of this is, dayum, the Maltby DBM heads look great, and, per the MPF are a lot more forgiving than my MP64's. They have the same loft but less offset than my MP64's - I like less offset. I think I like their look better too. We will see how they hit - look like they may launch high - fair amount of beef low in the head and of more on the perimeters too.

FWIW - saw this on Titleist

DG X7: Butt = 347 CPM/ Tip = 979 CPM.

Modus 130Stiff (based on the 124g weight listed: Butt = 340 CPM / Tip = 970 CPM

Not that it means a whole lot, but, I thought interesting that, as Titleist lists them, the 130 stiff is not far off the butt and tip stiffness of the DG X7. The 130 stiff is a beast - the 130 xstiff must be a beast-squared. I am trying 130R hs1.

I always thought the DG shafts were butt soft and tip stiff. The 130S certainly doesn't play particularly stout. I was under the impression that the 130 was butt stiff and softer in the tip? That's certainly the feel I get from it and not surprising given the step pattern in the lower part of the shaft.

I wouldn't say the 130S is anything like the X7. The 130X is probably closer.

Has anyone gone from 105 to 125? If so did you keep the same flex and ball flight? Did you ssx1 the 125? And how much did the swingweight go up? I am playing the 105s currently. Played kbs tour 120s with kushin inserts before that. I love the flight and feel of the 105s in my 4-7 but have struggled with the shorter irons. Tried the modus 120s and that was a disaster for me. Thinking the 125 will be similar weight as the kbs with the kushin inserts but concerned about what will happen to the flight of my longer irons.

To create feels of bendpoints a shaft needs to go from being relatively stiff to relatively soft from one section to the other. Relative is highlighted because that's what gives feels of a shaft, absolute stiffness isn't that important (besides from the obvious fact that you need a shaft that bends the amount you prefer/need in the swing). A stiff butt and a soft mid, you're going to get a ton of flex in that mid. A relatively soft butt and a stiff mid, you're going to feel more flex under the hands. This doesn't have to be isolated to just butt, mid, and tip. Shafts can have micro bend points if you will.

Aside: What is relative? Kim Braly, of KBS, and his Dad did work on shafts in the 70s 80s and came up with a gradient from butt to tip that is about "normal." I say normal because most shafts we've used in the past 30+ years have been pretty close to this. It doesn't bend a ton in any specific spot, just sort of equally down the shaft. You might like this or it might not fit your feel preference.

The DG X100 (a pretty typical Bralyesque profile with some unique bend feels) from my experience is stiff in the butt but loses stiffness rather quickly into the mid-butt, this gives the feel that its butt soft because it flexes a good bit towards the butt end of the shaft. The shaft loses stiffness on a pretty straight line from there. The mid-tip is firm, so that area doesn't absorb much deflection, increasing the feel that the shaft is butt soft.

Modus 130 while the butt stiffness is very firm in absolute terms, its not stout compared to the ridiculously stout mid. So the mid doesn't absorb much deflection at all relative to a typical stiffness gradient, so the butt and tip have to. This is how PX feels to a lesser degree. I have a ton of experience with PX, not so much with 130, but to me PX is great but the relative tip softness lofts the ball just a tiny bit too much. I am getting some 125s soon. I'm hoping they're everything I want!

Had my first range session with my 6 iron demos with 130 R HS1, 120X ss1 and 125 stiff strait in. I am a PX 5.5, S400, hit my 7 iron 160 kind of guy - no crazy speed - typically hit a draw - pull draw is my nemesis. My Mizuno optimizer release factor was 3 so in middle between middle release and Sergio release.

All 6 irons were 5/8 over Titleist CB stock lengths. 120s was D5, 125 about D4 and 130 about D3. So, none of the swing weights were crazy high - D3 or 4 is probably my sweetspot.

Initial impressions for me. Hitting into a 5-10 mph breeze.

Didn't like the 120 - didn't feel good and hit spinny ballooning shots that landed short. Did find middle of the club pretty consistently which I did will all three Modus shafts. I was hitting cuts most commonly - may have been too stiff for me. But, ball got up high but spun up to its height (eyeball test). I will try a 120 stiff just to make sure I give the 120 a fair go.

125s is pretty aptly described (by Mark) as DG performance and KBS feel - pretty much nails it. Like it. Hit mid high shots, very consistent and could hit draws or fades. Could knock 'em down Appeared to be roughly as long as my gamers in distance. Felt mid bend shaft with moderately stiff butt and tip.

130 R HS1. Was the shaft enjoyed hitting the most. Kept going back to it to hit. So, that's a sign. Heavy but swings fine. Ball launches high but does not appear to spin - get a ballistic type arcing flight. I like seeing the high flight, so, no problem there. Amazingly consistent and straight. Could fade it easier than I could draw it. Thin shots got some elevation because of the tip - I thin more than I fat. Liked the feel.

So far the 130 is #1, 125 #2 and 120 #3.

Next, I am going to try a 105 stiff (straight in), a 130 R (straight in), 125S SS1, and a 120 S straight in.

Great feeling shafts, and, finding middle more often with all of the Modus' I have tried than my 95g graphite shafts.

Reading through this thread, something I don't get is a fair number of pretty high swing speed folks using S300 and then switching to 130x and finding them awesome, easy to swing, etc. I am not high swing speed - 160 7 iron - and I feel S300 are too soft, spinny, high flight and a lot of curve. And, I like the 130 but in something more like R flex, maybe plus a hard step. What would be the reason some that have been playing S300 fit 130x so well? And, me, modest speed, hated the S300, but, like the 130 like in R flex? Not savvying that. More curious than anything - what works, works.
