It just me or are a lot of pros switching to Nippon Iron Shafts?

Anyone know of graphite shaft alternatives to the Reggio M that have a relatively stiff butt, stiffer mid and softer tip - something like 6754 or 5643 in the international flex code (higher number = stiffer, lower number = softer; numbers, left to right, are butt to tip)?

High price point but maybe the AD MJ or AD MT?

Fujikura pro tour spec. The black and white one that came out a couple years ago. I know the XLR8 profile is different, not sure about the latest Fuji pro.. but that black and white one has a real stiff mid that goes into a softer tip. JB Holmes swings it, among others.

Thanks, MTG, I will check the Fuji Tourspec out.

I play KBS C-Taper S+ Hard Stepped Once and I'm going to be upgrading irons in the near future and want to try some different iron shaft options. Which Nippon shaft would be similar? The 125 or the 130? I like my C-Tapers fine, they don't blow me away but I've had them for almost 4 years now and I haven't kicked them out of the bag. A slightly higher ball flight with the same spin would be nice.

Long time Ctaper guy. Been playing the 125X. I suppose I would slightly agree with the 125X idea. I would implore you to test the 125X extensively before deciding though.... they are quite different from Ctapers.

I did a fitting fairly recently and hit the 125x. They produced lower spin and flight for me then c taper and project x 6.5, which was the last shaft I used. Only shaft that was similar in flight and getting spin down was steelfiber i125x.

I am playing 125x now. Coming from PX 6.0... DG X100 before that. Modus are slightly lower than PX and higher than X100 for me. Spin is in line with PX. Feel of the 125 is phenomenal. It has a stiff butt, softer mid, and nice firm tip. I honestly think the closest analogue for 125 is DG S300. It has a stiff tip and butt and flexes in the middle. I just think Nippon really perfected the profile and with their super tight tolerances just take it to a new level. That and the 125x is a little stiffer than S300. X100 has a different profile altogether than S300 so it fits a serious need in the market. S400 gets a ton of play on tour. They're probably hard stepping them, but I'm not surprised because when the profile fits your action its hard to beat.

I think you see a lot of variation with the feedback on 125's trajectory because of that lively mid. Unless you're playing them too stiff for you you'll feel the mid flex a decent amount. So you have to get some, not necessarily a ton of, shaft lean at impact to keep ball flight under control. Otherwise I could see how they could fly pretty high. If you can control your dynamic loft at impact though and jibe with the feel this is going to be one great shaft for you.

Quick report on my demoing with Trackman, indoors (which I don't like) to see the numbers - found my shafts finally.

Demoed (all six irons) my gamers (MP64 w Paderson TSI x-stiff (88gm)), 130R straight in, 130R HS1, 130S SS1, 125S, 125S SS1, and 105S HS.

Club head speed is pedestrian - around 83-87 mph regardless of shaft.

  1. Started with gamer and was getting 21.5 launch and about 7,500 spin and a fair amount of dispersion mostly right on Trackman, but, on course it is mostly left - he thought they were too light and too stiff for me.
  2. Fitter wanted to go to opposite end of spectrum, so, we went 130S SS1. Lower dispersion but still spun it circa 7,200, launch around 21 but a fair number of right pushes. He didn't like me in it - thought it too heavy for me, so, he put that on the reject pile right away. Said he thought spin was up because the shaft was too heavy for me, so, maybe I was flipping it a bit to power it through. Coming in, that was my favorite shaft by feel -loved the feel. He said it is too heavy and the shaft was swing me.
  3. Then went to 105S HS1. Better dispersion, launch 20-21, higher 6ks spin better dispersion few MPH more speed. He liked that for me and went back and forth with it and the 125S
  4. 125S - less dispersion, launch 20-21, still in the high 6ks spin, very consistent - I like the feel of the 125S over the 105s HS1 even though I had a few more MPH with the 105S SS1. Peak height of 105S HS1 and 125S were both at 100 feet +/- 3 feet - very consistent.
  5. Tried a 120s he had in a PXG 7 iron - couldn't hit it solid at all and spun it up in the high 7k's
  6. Tried a 105s he had in a JPX900 7 iron and that was more inconsistent than the 105S HS1 and spun that in the mid to high 7k's.
  7. Flipped back and forth with the 125S and 105S HS1 and the results were nearly identical, but, the 105S HS1 had a few MPH more speed and the 125S was more consistent and I liked the feel better - we were leaning 125S. Spin, launch, peak height were all virtually the same between these two.
  8. I told him I was being stubborn, and picked up my 130R HS1 and hit that. Boom, boom - He said, I like what I am seeing with that. Very consistent pattern, even thins went 100 ft peak plus/minus only a few feet, descent angle was about 50 or so, launch about 20.5 and spin about 6,200. Feel awesome! He said they fit and I was swinging them at the 121gm weight - they weren't swinging me. Really love them.
  9. Tried the 130R straight in and I was less consistent and spun it more which confirmed the 130R HS1. He said the 121 gm weight seemed to be a good weight for me and the profile fit my swing well.

So, we ended with 130R HS1 (think HS2 would work fine without an issue) as the choice and I am very pleased. Purchasing shortly and sticking them in my MD3 wedges, MP64 PW-6 and 712U 3 and 4 irons (I bend them to be stronger 4 and 5 irons and since I play overlength 1/2 they are perfect)! Really can't wait.

Next is trying to find graphite shafts that mimic the 130 profile. I know Nippon makes one (Reggio M) which I will probably splurge on down the road, but trying a cheaper route first (RIP beta 70 in fairways and RIP gamma 60 in driver - will see how that goes).

May have found an alternative 130 match in graphite. Not cheap though.

House of Forged 49 shaft. Light at circa up 50s grams but very robust butt at mid w medium stiff tip. I had an X which is too stiff for me on paper. But, feels fantastic in driver. Maybe stiff would have been wiser but x was very stable and still launched mid high and could draw it. Hit some of my best drives today. 2 cents

I haven't installed yet. I went 130R HS1 which means both the PW and 9 iron have the 37" shaft (actually so will my GW). For my 54 and 58 I went 8 iron one flex up - so 130S SS2. The only irons I am a little mixed about with this setup is PW and GW with 130R straight in, but, it shouldn't make too much of a difference. I will see soon enough.

I just shafted my i200s with the modus 130s ssx1. They swingweight a little lught for the weight of the shafts. Had to add a little weight to get them to the swingweight i wanted.

I had been traveling for work so no range time except for a few balls to warm up before the round. Almost everything was off the center of the face. I could go after them as hard as I wanted and i could hit a 3/4 knockdown. They feel very stiff in my hands but they have such a smooth kick at the bottom of the swing. Flight didn't start all that high for me but they apexed pretty high and just kept going. They were at least a half a club longer for me than the 105s were. They may take a little time to dial in the yardage but it didn't take me any time to get used to the feel.

7 iron was flying 170. Hard transition and normally low ball hitter. Will report back once I get some practice time and a few rounds under my belt.

I wouldn't worry about it, I have mine hard stepped and I don't notice a difference in the 9 or wedge. You will be fine.

Playing the Modus 125X and have been happy. Been more consistent compared to the X100 in my prior irons. Question - has anyone tried the Modus 105X in a hybrid? I have a hybrid with a PX 6.5 (steel) now and I like the feel of steel. Figured the Modus has a similar bend profile to the 125X so maybe worth a try in a hybrid?

Hey guys. First time poster here. Love the input on this forum. I'm sure it's somewhere in the 233 pages, but any feedback would be much appreciated. I play mizuno blades with s400 hsx1, and everything else I've tried seems to fall short. I always get fitted for x100's, but they don't feel as good and mishits sting the hands. Had some c taper 120s and they went good just kinda flatlined in the air and went far. I've tried the x7 and it's ok I just can't work it like I want. Tried some blades with 130s hsx1 and they went a mile. I've got some pxg 0311t heads I want to shaft. Thinking about a 120tx or a 125x both straight in. Driver speed is around 120. 7 iron speed is 93 or so with an s400, little higher with something lighter. Flight is good with the DG maybe just a bit spinny.Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks very much!

For those of you playing the 105s in your iron shafts, what do you play in your wedges? My concern is that the 105s is just going to be to light for the wedges so I look forward to hearing what other 105s users are using.

I have stock 105 stiff in all 3 of Ping glide 2.0's wedges all cut to 35" around D3.5 and no issues being too light or whippy, and I have the 130's in my Apex CF16's and performs as well as 105's just little more height, plenty of guys on tour have 205 stiff and it holds up well for them.

I know it's in here somewhere, but I really don't have time to read through this thread for the 3rd or 4th time .... Those of you who have played PX, which Modus shaft are you getting along with? I was fit for and am playing 6.0s and having some elbow issues. Nippon might be my last steel resort. I've demoed 120s and didn't love, so other than those, what's the suggestion?

Well, I got the help I needed in this thread moving from C-Taper to Modus 125, and I love them. Unfortunately not an option from Mizuno, and I can always reshaft to Modus later if needed.

Outside of S300, what would be comparable to the 125? I need the weight. I was thinking a 6.5 LZ ssx1.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I wanted to drop a quick note here that I shafted in a set of Modus 125 into my Srixon 945 heads a few weeks ago, and these are the best feeling shafts I have ever played.

I play a Rogue Xstiff driver and fairway shaft, but the Modus 125 are stiff flex. I was worried they would feel whippy, but they are great and when the iron face hits the ball it feels like butter! I noticed no change in ball flight from KBS 125 in stiff+, but these feel so much less harsh!

Loving my 105s in my i200s however i want to experiment with a graphite shaft in the 4 iron. Do you guys have any suggestions on a graphite option that is similar to the 105s? Looking for something in the 9-95 gram range in attempts to get little more swing speed.
