It just me or are a lot of pros switching to Nippon Iron Shafts?

Loving my 105s in my i200s however i want to experiment with a graphite shaft in the 4 iron. Do you guys have any suggestions on a graphite option that is similar to the 105s? Looking for something in the 9-95 gram range in attempts to get little more swing speed.

You may want to look at aerotech steel fiber shafts maybe the i95 stiff, had them in my Ping i25's

Are the ns pro 1150 as joint friendly as the Modus versions?

Absolutely, I have the 1150gh x flex in a set and they are a very good shaft. Every bit as good as the modus. Feel great. Tried all the modus profiles and I like them, but I liked the 1150 better.

have 130s ssx2 in my irons and LOVE them

need the active tip for launch for my late release

but

have the modus wedge 125s in my sw and lw

love the action on the lw pitching and chipping, but struggling with distance and direction control on full shots with the shaft

thinking the higher weight and lower torque of the wedge shafts may be the source of the issue

thinking of trying the wedge 115 (lower weight to just around the 130s and bit higher torque)

any views?

thanks

I currently play the 105s straight in 5-GW, tried the 125, 115 and 105 wedge shafts and the 115's were the right fit for me in my 54 and 58 vokeys. Play the 105 s in my gap wedge for mainly full shots.

Just try the same shafts that you already like in the wedges. I did and they are fine.

Well, I got the help I needed in this thread moving from C-Taper to Modus 125, and I love them. Unfortunately not an option from Mizuno, and I can always reshaft to Modus later if needed.

Outside of S300, what would be comparable to the 125? I need the weight. I was thinking a 6.5 LZ ssx1.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

LZ is probably a little closer to Modus 120, feel-wise probably somewhere between 120 and 125. Might work, might not. Pricey but the new $ taper might be an option.

Quick update on my 130's in my irons, at 5/8 over Titleist MB lengths (as reference point).

GW messed up initial delivery by sending me parallel tips but they sent me taper tips on 2 day mail except for the 37" 130 Rs. GW says they are out of 37", so, pending delivery in a few weeks. Here are the sticks.

  • Titleist 712U (3 iron bent to spec) 4 Nippon Modus 130R HS1 (121 gm)
  • Titleist 712U (4 iron bent to spec) 5 Nippon Modus 130R HS1 (121 gm)
  • Mizuno MP-64 6 Nippon Modus 130R HS1 (121 gm)
  • Mizuno MP-64 7 Nippon Modus 130R HS1 (121 gm)
  • Mizuno MP-64 8 Nippon Modus 130R HS1 (121 gm)
  • Mizuno MP-64 9 Nippon Modus 130R HS1 (121 gm)
  • Mizuno MP-64 Pitch Nippon Modus 130R (121 gm)
  • Callaway MD3 Milled Matte Black (W Grind) 50-11 S400 SS2
  • Callaway MD3 Milled Matte Black (W Grind) 54-12 Nippon Modus 130S SS2 (124 gm)
  • Callaway Mack Daddy Matte Black Wedges (PM-Grind) 58-10 Nippon Modus 130S SS2 (124 gm)

Titleist and Mizuno's came in at D1 for 4i, D2 3i-9i and D3 for PW - so pretty good SW's for me even though over length build because of the high balance nature of shafts. The Callaway wedges are much higher at D7ish which I am OK with.

Absolutely love the 130R HS1 - plenty stable through the entire swing for me with nice kick through impact (PX 5.5 guy prior as reference). Get nice high controlled flight and no ballooning - can knock down and can turn them both ways (sometimes on purpose!). They feel exactly how I wish my irons would have always felt. A joy to swing. Although I find the 130S SS2 in my 54 and 58 really stable and accurate, I may go 130R 37" in those just so all my irons have the same heft and feel, or, I may just stick with the heavier shafts - really not much to complain about.

All in all, in was worth the trial and demoing over a few months. Modus 130s rock.

Which 130s shaft did you use for the 54 and 58 when you ssx2

Thanks

For those of you playing the 105s in your iron shafts, what do you play in your wedges? My concern is that the 105s is just going to be to light for the wedges so I look forward to hearing what other 105s users are using.

You could go with the Modus 105 wedge specific shaft, which is 111 grams or the 115 version, which is 122 grams. Both are super smooth so pick the right weight and enjoy!

I used the 8 iron 130S shaft (38"). Really is stable. Never liked wedge-specific shafts like DG Spinner or similar.

I'm have the 105 X in my i200s thru GAP wedge. I have Ping's AWT 2.0 wedge shafts (118g) in my 54 and 60. I've been very pleased with the entire set. In fact this combo is the best set of irons/shafts I've ever owned.

I came from C-Tapers 130 & X100's to Super Peening Blues (which are hard to find second hand but you can still order them thru Nippon dealers) and the change has been absolutely wonderful for me especially into the wind. Where the C-Tapers & X100's (especially) would shoot up and get carried away by the wind these still will still hold their line VERY well which allows you to be still somewhat aggressive but you'll just have to club up a little. Overspinning has always been an issue for me, at least in the Callaway MB heads I've been playing for the last few years but the SPB's have tamed that down for significantly. SPB's have a great smooth (yet firm/solid) feel and their dispersion is just as good as the C-Taper's and bonus points for the SPB's since the tips don't bend like the KBS's do.

I cannot stand the feel of the C-Tapers but there's no doubt they perform. I wish Nippon would come out with a true low/low Modus variation.

Scour the internet for some Super Peening Blues, they ended my shaft search after years of trials. you'll find nothing but great feedback (yet limited) on here. I found a set of brand new pulls last year on the bay but I was able to order a 3 iron shaft through a dealer without issue. Not the cheapest way to go no doubt but they are worth IMO.

Yep! I have a set in my Miura Giken blades, which I have no business playing but couldn't care less. By far, my favorite steel shaft of all-time. I think the Modus line performs a little better into the wind (I tested the SPB against Modus 120 TX and the Modus launched higher but surprisingly got through the wind more effectively) but in terms of an all-around package including feel, the SPB's are the best. Pair them with Epon 302s and there is nothing better.

That's very interesting! The majority of people on here have said the 120's hit high moon balls but I guess it goes to show how much shafts perform differently for each swing. How would you compare the feel the 120's to the SPB's?

I'm finally going to try some Nippon shafts. Ordering the mizuno mp18 with modus 120x hard stepped once. I hit them yesterday and was blown away by the feel and dispersion. Spin was a touch higher than I'd like at around 6500 with a 6 iron. Hoping the hardstepping will help shave a few hundred RPMs off.

Playing PX 6.0 after a recent fitting. Just a few rounds and my elbows are not good. 2nd place in the fitting was Nippon 1150gh stiff. They did spin a little too much and I tend to do better in the 120+ gram range. Should I try an 1150 in x? I know many have gone from PX to 130. Which Modus is closest to the 1150? Is it the 125?

All I can offer is my experience, had px 6.0 lz stiff, got rid of them and have two sets now, Nippon 105 stiff in iBlades and 130 stiff in a CF16 Apex and hit a 7 iron 180 and have no ballooning issues, no other issues, I know I have 100 mph driver SS and maybe it's the Nippon shafts that give me the distance and control with my irons, plus those two shaft are free upgrades on the clubs respectively.
