A few rounds with ‘uncle Cardy’ is obviously what the doctor ordered Stu.

The ‘Canadian Special’ will undoubtedly rise again. Never thought I’d be able to elevate that Wilson 2 iron above, but a tip soft graphite shaft did the trick. A uniquely satisfying experience when you nut a beat stick.

Wishing you and yours all the best as we move through the holidays.

Merry Christmas to all.

Oh yeah Cardy can play--- When we played on Thursday I stepped back to the mid tees with him. He did not make me I did it on my own and it made me think differently and it was fun. He hits a driver high and far higher and further than I can even when I was his age. He also played in the Shootout with us on Saturday and it was fun.

Yeah the trick on those 2 irons is to get a shaft that will kick on the bottom end. You know I used a untipped S-300 on the Hogan 2 iron

Merry Christmas to you and all--- Cardy is supposed to be back here on the 30th and hope he plays with us again in the New Years day Shootout

Deejaid,

Brushed set of beauties. Jeff Sheets nailed this design.

I searched for a set of Apex ‘99s in good condition for years. Was able to land a full set of blades AND cb’s at a cost that was too good to pass up. Had both sets, along with a set of reissued Fluid Feels, stripped of chrome and dipped in copper. An aged finish was applied.

Every time I take them out for a round I wonder why I don’t put them into play more often. Too few rounds played and too many irons to rotate.

Sorry to repost all the pics, but they're just too damn sexy not to be on every page.

Question though... how does the copper plating hold up compared to a typical factory finish?  A set of MP33's are begging for this in my future collection.

Unfortunately, I can’t give an accurate durability review as each as seen limited play.

The copper layer is thin, but I assume they would wear like any finish if they were a primary set and saw extensive action.  Sandy balls definitely show in the finish, but I suspect the imperfections will be hidden as they patina.

I am close to obsessive when it comes to cleaning my clubs so they tend to wear well.

Wish I had more concrete answers.

Had a brainwave . . .

A look to some older Colokrom sets could shed some light.

Also included a set I own to demonstrate a true aged finish I would like to achieve on the VIPs

I knew Cardy was a ‘player’ and am not shocked that you would have him back for another visit.  Always struck me as the Real McCoy.

I too enjoy moving between tee boxes. Keeps the season interesting. Almost a necessity when I’m carrying a persimmon short set.

@PeanutsDaddy The 99's are boss!  Way to nice to take afield and beat around into terra firma.  (Unless you're picking with preciseness.)  I'd be taking them along for a stroll and show in one bag, and actually playing the gamers in another.  Push and carry.

Moving tee boxes as well.  Forward.  Way forward with classic W & B.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

5700 - 6000 yards seems to be a sweet spot right now.  Persimmon driver travels 210 - 220 on a quality strike, depending on the conditions, so that’s as much yardage as I care to bite off.

As for the ‘99’s . . . I subscribe to the ‘tools not jewels’ club. If I own them, they will see play, but I care for them as a craftsman should.  Never been one to hold onto a wall hanger.

Merry Christmas Fella.

Absolutely I move up to the Green Super Senior tees ( 70 and over) when playing the blades and real lumber. I only hit the lumber about 200 210 with roll out

The copper finish Macs are surprisingly hard--- They do not have that buttery feel at all--- I have played them down here with no noticable wear--- For me they do not work I have a tendency to hit hot shots with the lower irons but love the long irons as long as I am not trying to hold a green. Now in the wind I love the long irons if going for distance and hitting a runner

Do you think the feel and performance is more a function of the ‘wingback’ design and the resulting distribution of weight?

For me and you know this is just me the wingback design does not affect me--- I have a few wingbacks that are not Colokroms and they hit good for me---- I think for me it is my uncanny feel and I feel the faces are harder. I hit a trap cut and can spin almost anything any type of ball within reason but for some reason i can not spin those copper faced irons. I have had 2 sets of them both 80s repros but with good grooves. Like I said I got real good penetrating ball flight with the long irons and with roll out maybe 5 to 7 more yards distance. But maybe it is just me

So I picked up these recently. Mizuno Craft Model 893s, 4i to PW. The price was too good to pass up, probably because there was no SW or 3i, but that doesn't bother me because I can happily throw in an extra wedge or two and play these.

I re-gripped them all and adjusted the lofts and lies to my liking (they were strong-lofted and REALLY flat), but so far I've only hit the 8i at the range. Very promising.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting these out to the course, but I need to have a practice session or two with them first. They set up really nicely. A little bit of offset, but not too much, thinnish topline, and not too long from heel to toe.

I've a set of those. They play really well. I especially like the shape of the short irons. I've not hit the Fg59s, but I've heard lots of good things about them. Aren't the heads really compact?

Yes, the Fg59s are very compact.  Definitely the smallest blade I've ever hit.  Fantastic design.  Just fantastic...

Hey Nard....I would love to act like it was mostly the back or that it was mostly being really busy with work...but really it was mostly losing my driver and not able to play like I was which was less incentive to get out there when I could and that just snowballed into maybe if I don’t play for a couple years I will come back a 7 cap cause all the bad things will magically go away hahaha.  Time for plan b I guess...

Bloody Hell, he lives!

Talking of losing the swing, I realise I had lost mine for the last 2 years or so. Had surgery on my right arm to remove a big lump of fat, and Hey Presto! my swing comes back. The lump was preventing my right arm from moving properly. I didn't make any conscious changes post-surgery, just noticed that my arms were able to get through the swing better.

Swing speed is also back up, which is nice😁
