I played a persimmon and blades rounds recently, putting my Mizuno MS-7s in the bag. They're a great iron, though in terms of looks I think I prefer the chrome look of the TP-9s.

I bagged 2i to PW, taking out the SW in favour of a Mac VIP SW. The 2i I brought mainly for one particular hole, a short (334-yards) par 4 with OB left and right and one that I never feel confident over the tee shot. I figured the 2i would be short enough to keep me out of trouble, yet still give me enough distance to have a wedge to the green.

 

When I came to the hole, I took the 2i, hit it up the left side of the fairway as planned, leaving about 110~115 to a back pin. SW on wasn't great, but OK. Finished the hole with a nice 3-putt. On the bright side, I've figured out the tee-shot part of this hole😅

Went to fitter this week and my best numbers were with Titleist 620 MBs. Distance wasn’t much more than my MP-33s. Difference was simply loft. About a degree stronger with Titleist and gave about 2-4 yards is all. May buy some when new model comes out but for now I will stay in my 33s.

Welp, the MP29s have officially kicked the i200s out of the bag. I am hitting them straighter and they are just more fun, period. 

 

Right now my biggest debate is this: stick with MP29s (because I kind of don't see how anything could be better) or National Custom Works full set from 1 iron through LW (everything but driver and putter), Blueprints, or those new retro Miuras...  Thoughts?

This has me thinking about pulling the ZX5s out of the bag and slipping in the ol' MP33s for a few rounds. They're obviously not as long but with them, I can take dead aim -- and enjoy that flushed Mizuno feel, too.

I played 9 holes today with the Maxfli Australian Blades designed by Tad Moore in the bag, the TM-92 irons.

 

When I bought these a few years ago, I took them the range and promptly shanked a bunch of shots. Naturally, I lost confidence in them, and put them aside with the intention of selling them. I should add, that the shanking was most certainly swing-related than club-related, but there's a confidence issue as well.

 

Anyway, recently, I decided to give them one last try, so I put them in the classic bag (persimmon woods) and took them to the range. Decided they could be interesting so took them to the course today.

 

In a word: fantastic! Great irons, really precision clubs. The head is really compact, which means that a hit off the toe really goes. On the first hole, I had about 145 to the pin hitting into the wind. I went with an easy 8i and hit it clean, but a little bit towards the toe. Not a problem! The  ball landed about 12ft past the pin to set up a decent birdie chance (missed, but hey, we can't make them all).

I hit the 5i, 6i, 8i (a lot), 9i, and PW today, and enjoyed every shot. Really love these irons, and I am adding them to the rotation. Just got to make sure my game is one for them.

Edit: forgot to add: shot 41 with one OB (tee shot with a 5w) and a water ball from miscalculating distance.

I have really been struggling with consistency this year.  I have been using PXG 0211 irons, then Cobra Forged Tec Copper. I started the year with a 3.6 index and went up to 6.4.  I decided to put my Tourstage X-Blade 909 irons back in the bag.  I play the set at 4-PW and I am really enjoying the blades.  For some reason, I hit these clubs further,straighter, and higher than my other sets.  I have played three rounds with them and have gone 72,72,71.  My index has dropped to 3.9 and is definitely trending in the right direction.  I have ordered a 4-PW set of PXG Gen4 0311ST blades so will see how they compare to the XBlades.

That's in the bag of one of the people I was playing with. As he is an older gent who used to play clubs with more traditional lofts, I'm guessing that the P is to remind him that it's like an PW, the 49 is loft, and the 8793 is distance on full shots (87~93 yards).

Pretty much all the X-blade offerings look good, but the 909 are my favourites.

Been disassembling these for a while now… finally got the heads off. Guess I’ll put them up for sale. The shafts are nice too, but an inch over length, maybe more.

If you've the money, National Custom Works! But from what I've heard, they're not cheap, so 1i~LW will cost you an arm and a leg.

Nice grips, though a bit understated for my liking.

 

It appears that shaft lengths are measured differently according to manufacturer. I think most use a variant of the 60* method, in which the sole is rested on a piece of wood or plastic at 60* to perpendicular and then the club is measured from that angle point to either the end of the shaft itself, or the lower part of the crown on the butt of the grip, or the top of the crown itself. There really is no standard way.

If you're just measuring the length of the pulled shaft with grips attached, I'd just measure from the tip to the top of grip, but as I say, some places might only measure to the lower part of the butt crown or whatever. How long the shafts will play in a different club head depends on the bottom of bore to ground measurement (BBGM), and that varies from club to club.

After a year away from them I bought my MP18 SC's back from my neighbor.  Had the best round of the year with them on the first time out.  Not a true blade so don't be mad, but man did I miss those irons.

Just posted this in completely the wrong thread. Meant to post it here.

 

Played a couple of rounds this week, once with my MP-14s, then today, on a whim, with my Srixon Pro 100s, which I think are an often overlooked blade.

 

The MP-14s I've had for a while, but rarely take them to the course. I think this time was my second time out with them, though I have practised with them a lot. They're soft, like everyone says. Shot 40-40 for an 80, with putting being the main problem. Didn't really have a lot of irons to hit, but what I had I hit pretty well. I bagged the 4i to PW, but next time I take them out I'll probably make it a persimmon and blades round and bag the full 2i to PW.

 

Then today I was at a course I've never played before, which was short but tight. Last night I decided to throw in the Pro 100s (5i-PW) and add my Mizuno Fli-hi #4 as an option on the numerous short, narrow par 4s.

 

I only used the Fli-hi once, a short, tight, semi-blind par 4, and it was for my worst shot of the day, a toe-chunked tee shot that barely made it 150 off the tee. That left me about 180 to the pin, which was on a raised green and led to my best shot of the day, a 6i that landed 3-foot past the hole and finished 4-foot away. Result: a rather unlikely birdie.

 

I really enjoyed these Pro 100s. They have a dense feel to them, and a squat, compact, powerful looking head. I started the round with a driver-6i to a downhill par 5 for a 2-putt birdie, and at that point I knew I was going to get on with them.

 

Front nine was a doozy, 2-under 34, but the wheels came off on the back nine with some poor putting and indifferent wedge play and I finished with a 41 for a 75. I probably wasn't helped by the one-hour lunch break between the front and back nines.

I think they were released sometime in the early 2000s, like 2003 0r 2004. Probably not a large number of sets released, either.

I've been playing the Mizuno pro 221 since about February (fit with the project x LS)...  I have to say that these are the best clubs I've ever played.  I've been playing blades off and on since the late 90s... Lots of Mizuno and Titleist with others mixed in.  I know we all love the old blades, but I think these will go down as some of the best ever.

They do look nice. Really nice. Starting to think, when I go modern 10 years from now, they'll be one of the clubs I look at. Or, I could just swing a couple next time I go to the range...

 

I've been pulling a few sets of clubs out of the attic to finally put up for sale, a lot of classics, and each look at a club has me weighing what I want in each club. I want to settle on something and they have a great fitting center at Mizuno down in Osaka.

Nice timing of this post. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on these. Nothing has ever compared to the feeling of the MP29 for me. Might as well stick with the king of feel. Quite intrigued by the "soft copper underlay: a microlayer of copper beneath Nickel Chrome". They look fantastic.

You won't be disappointed.  The shape is perfect to my eye.  Turf interaction is great, too!

Got into a PGA Superstore today and was able to look at some full sets of some mbs: MP221, Wilson Staff, P7MB, Miura. Actually the P7MBs were by far my favorite

to look at from address. Made of 1025 steel, too. Obviously a favorite on the PGA Tour…
