Shoulder question?

Recommended Posts

I have noticed that my left arm is lower than my right arm. I'm trying to correct this as I think it is causing me to hit a hook.

Am I correct assuming that if your shoulders are open to the target line you left arm will be lower than the right at address?

If you close your shoulder to the target line does it raise the left arm at address? So the arms are equal height? Do you need to do something else to make the arms equal height?

Or am I off base on this?

Thanks

It might be a spine tilt issue. If you look at yourself face on is your spine vertical or even leaning toward target?

Guess I don't know the answer to that MonteScheinblum. I know that it feels like I'm closing my shoulders to the target line to get the arms equal. But I could be tilting my spine away from the target. I have seen that if the left arm is lower my ball starts left of the target line and hooks. If I work to keep the arm at equal height I get a straight ball. I just discovered this today. I have always used a neutral grip by the way if it makes any difference. Was wondering too if should move my grip more to the left. More closed to raise the left arm.

Do you think it could be spin tilt as well?

Thanks

Not to diminish or divert a word of what Monte is suggesting.... but rather to participate in the discussion..,.

I would tend to believe what's been said to me during lessons in the past. That being that it's very common to want the forearms and elbows to be dead-square to the target line which can end up pulling the right handed golfer's upper body alignment to the left. This is born of the fact that the right hand for this golfer is lower than the left hand on the handle. That lower trail hand can cause a little leak in upper body solution. The coaching I've been given to correct for this is to soften the trail elbow just a fraction allowing that elbow and arm to appear from DTL as though the trail elbow is seen a touch closer to the body than the lead arm (again as seen DTL). This squares the shoulders back up.

I've also been taught that provided the grip is reasonable, the ball will tend to leave you in the direction the of the shoulder alignment. I realize ball flight laws are "laws" and there's more to it that just shoulder alignment. The point being that those fighting pulls, pull hooks, and pull slices might be good candidates to explore if in fact their trail elbow is a little too high and stiff at address. ....its at least worth checking

EDIT: FWIW - I was taught this same effect applies to putting - especially if/when the putting grip is not enough in the palms. Again, YES the direction of the putter face at impact is still a MONSTER factor but we are talking about solidness of contact versus a wiping move across the ball.
