Titleist 915 D4 and AP1 forged

Recommended Posts

I was talking with my Titleist rep that just came back from their merchandise show preview. He talked to me about a D4 at 400cc. Looks like Adam Scott made Titleist build such club for him. He tried this setup but went back to D3. The rep told me it would be on custom order only.

He also mentioned a forged set of AP1 to sit in between AP1 and AP2 irons.

Anyone else heard about these clubs?

Cheers,

The original thing I heard was that the D4 was 440 but with the weight up front and then the D5 was 400. Heard this from our rep last summer, he didn't know if they would be available at all. The Ap1 forged have been available to the asian market for a few years now.

I never have understood why Titleist offers such a wider variety of products in a few asian markets. I think a lot of the products they offer there would sell good elsewhere to.

Their VG3 line looks interesting to.

Same reason a lot of OEMs do. That market is more willing to pay a lot for them.

They may sell a decent number of them, but the overhead that goes with them and the likely cannibalization of something else in the lineup may not be worth the return on investment in their estimation.

If this is true, I'll have to buy this and the Vapor Flex to test against the SLDR 430. Love this small-headed driver resurgence.

I don't get the hype here. If 400cc heads were really better, why do very few tour players play them. And why has the trend for the past ten years been towards larger heads. They are easier to hit. No one on here is a tour player. It's not like the D3 at 440cc is too high spinning or not workable enough for enough on here with the right shaft. I just don't get why someone would want a less forgiving driver than the D3. The best amateurs don't play tiny driver heads, and neither should you.

It's not always about performance. I personally just find smaller clubs more aesthetically pleasing and it inspires confidence.

I actually play the 420cc Nike VR driver. Not trying to sound pretentious, but my ball-striking is good enough that I'm not going to lose strokes with it. Now if only I could putt...;) I'm not trying to start an argument here, I was just trying to say that at the end of the day, you have to feel comfortable with your equipment. And for some people, that means smaller clubhead sizes.

Yeah no worries and I agree 100% that it's about confidence more than anything, as a +2 you are probably one of the few guys that could successfully play a D4. I was at TPI late last year and spoke to a few guys about the D4 and D5, they told me that it would fit such a small minority of players and they were concerned with people playing it that had no business doing so, they thought it would amplify the opinion that Titleist clubs are harder to hit. They have really tried hard to rid themselves of that opinion.

Racist, no. Generalisation of Asian across many races, ethnicities, economic backgrounds, etc, ? Pretty much, eh.
