Scotty Cameron great putters or bag bling?

Recommended Posts

Not arguing that Cameron has made some great putters, some are classic. I play a lot of golf year round, with a lot of different people. And 95% of Cameron owners buy it because it is a Scotty, it is almost like I am a good player because of it. I have owned a few Cameron putters, one straight from a tour players bag for mid-2000's. I am a blade style putter guy, mostly anser style. Hate putters with inserts. That being said, a good quality solid milled putter with the right weight all perform the same with me. Difference between brands are minuscule.

I feel they are like a fashion statement. The same as a female that wants fancy bags/ purses. Scotty Cameron does make a fine putter don't get me wrong but I feel that a lot of people but them as a social status so to speak. They are the "every mans putter". Not everyone can tell the difference between a scotty and any other putter out there but everyone knows what a Scotty Cameron is. A lot of serious golfers don't even know what a Bettinardi is but they admire a Scotty Cameron. I prefer some different putters at the moment because I like a softer feel than what Scotty has to offer right now but my favorite putter of all time is the Scotty Cameron Studio Design #5.

I agree.
Scotty exploded when Tiger was kicking everyone's a**. Then he was the first or amongst the first to computer fit to the pros.
Put that together and he started asking astronomical prices. They became stays symbols.

My worst putter ever was a Scotty.
But that was my fault as I purchased it without demoing.
The Mil Spec was "adjustable" and I figured that I could play with it until it fit me.
NOT

Seen many a player with Scotty's who can't putt.
But I've also seen many a player with name brand clubs who can't play
the style that they should.

EGO

Played Black series, Ping Anser Milled....
But then I found a Scotty Golo 5 by accident.
Was buying my bud a putter for his 60th.

Golo is in my bag because of the playability.
Not because it's a Scotty
I even went black version so it's not so "glam" looking.

IMO there's only ONE good putter.....................the one that you hole less putts with!!

I'm currently using a 2014 Squareback, but my putter history is varied

Odyssey Versa 9
Scotty Cameron Select Newport 2.5
Odyssey 2 Ball
Ping Rite-in B5
Ping J-Blade
Ping B90
Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum

I only change when I "fall out" with a putter but so far my current Scotty is doing the business

That being said, one of the guys I occasionally play with has a Slazenger Cast Putter from years ago from a starter set (whole lot for under £199) that he simply cannot replace

I would only say one "rule" for owning an expensive putter..........................make sure you can actually putt with it!!....There's nothing more embarrasing as seeing someone pull out an expensive putter and proceed to 3 putt every green!!

You don't need to spend $300 + to get a good putter. Pure Bling !
Pure bling implies that the object in question lacks utility. The putter is milled which regardless of brand tends to lead to a higher price. If it was pure bling there would be no difference between a scotty and an $89 cast ping. There is a manufacturing difference between the two.

You can buy a $100 putter that is just as good, Scotty's putters just have a nice look, he is very artistic in how he designs them. You can buy a Toyota or buy a Lexus, they both get you to work but one takes you with style.

Have you ever seen Scotty talk about his putters? It seems more like an art show than a golf demo. "The Art of Putting"

To some they are bag bling or bragging points. I'm sure we've all known people that do the peacock dance. Drive up in their M3 or whatever looking like Rickie Fowler.

And others just use what works the best for them and it's a Scotty.

I've owned a number of them but I've always sold them off. To me, they aren't any better at making putts than any other brand though. And if I can sell one, purchase another putter and still have money left over for a couple rounds of golf. That's the ticket for me. Low bang for the buck IMHO.
I guess I did really well on my bling then. I play a 2001 Newport 2 Pro Platinum that I paid $110 for and another $80 to have it restored and face milled. It's the best sounding putter to my ear when it strikes the ball (except for the first Nike RZ balls, it sounded horrible). I have some history now with it and as much as I try to replace it I just can't. Now I'm not going to lie and say that Tiger didn't have something to do with my choice of trying and maybe even buying said putter.

I really don't understand this debate at all. People should be able to play what they want to play and not be judged be their gear or really anything other criteria for that matter. Since we know that's not going to happen, [sarcasm] you should play whatever makes you look best and forget about what gets the ball in the hole [/sarcasm].

As a tool you can make a putter at home that is just as effective as an SC, Betti, boutique microbrew, or whatever turns you on. It just won't look as good or have resale value due to brand recognition. I myself own 3 cameron putters. A Futura x based solely on performance, a x5r based on performance/looks, and an old 90's Cameron that I've had for many years. Choosing a putter is very personal. The look, shape, and feel are very important to many buyers. Some are consumed by the status the brand imparts. To others, the only value is in performance. While still others equate the brand status with quality. Then there are combinations of all of that. So the simple answer(well sorta) is yes and yes.

You didn't plan to fail,
you failed to plan!

They are certainly great putters, no doubt about that. The price is debatable but they are very well made and will last a very long time if taken care of. I really treat my putter with care and I like having a manufacturer who does the same. I don't own a Scotty for bling purposes, I own it because it works for me (studio design 2).

I think most tour pros would agree it has nothing to do with this brand or the next. Its all what works for you. I have 7 or 8 scottys, few bettinardi's, pings, odysseys, amongst others and I can tell you I never bought a single one of them because of the brand or prestige factor. I putted great with it at the store or tried a buddy's out at the course then went and found one. I do think however, that it has to look pleasing to the eye for me and I like the milled feel without an insert so I tend to stay with some of the more premium putter brands. Its not that I really give a crap who sees what I have in my bag.

Year after year I see people buy the latest 500 dollar driver with a custom shaft just to wear out the heel and toe again....when they should be investing in either lessons or a custom putter that fits them perfect. You hit the putter more than any other club in the bag so why not be a putter ho like me!

Both. They are great putters. Are they better than any other fitted milled putter? Probably not. They have a good pricing strategy and they are easily recognizable. They have huge brand recognition. Unless you are gaming a CT the prices aren't that unreasonable.

I started out wanting one because of the name (and this board to be honest). My TM corza ghost is probably just as good as any of the scotty mallets I've owned (kombi, kombi S, red x5, etc...), I just like how the scotty's look more. One of the other reasons I still use them is scotty's hold their value pretty well compared to everything else, especially if you buy them used. The other is they do perform for me and I like how the look/feel.
I prefer the more square bumper from the top. The other problem my eyes have with the Odyssey and Ping putters is the bumpers aren't symmetrical, the toe bumper is longer than the heel putting the sight line not exactly in the center of the club. I have a Rife that is symmetrical and I'm guessing Ping has made one or two in their past as well but I know that every Cameron Newport 2 is symmetrical. I also have a YES that is symmetrical but I don't like the metallic ting sound it makes. Taylormade Anser shapes are also same size bumpers on both sides and I have two of those and have putted well with them too.

Different things are important to different people. For some it's name / brand, for others is size, shape, sound, feel. I know that most will say that if you sink more putts with a shovel then use that. For me if I enjoy the looks of a putter I inevitably will sink more putts with it.
