Long Sleeves

Phreddy

Recommended Posts

Maybe it is just me, but it appears that the Asian players on the LPGA tour wear long sleeves under golf shirts, and often times very high socks or leggings while North American and European players are more likely to wear "traditional' golf attire. Is there a cultural difference in approach to protection from sun? I realize that for any player, male/female or pro/recreational, protection from sun and skin cancer is a real issue, but it would seem to me there are contrasting approaches. Or is it something else entirely and I'm just missing it? Clues?

More & more of all the LPGA players are wearing long sleeves these days.....just protecting their skin from the harmful rays of the sun (sounds like a commercial doesn't it)? Ever seen a "veteran" player (I won't name names) real closeup? Their skin looks much older than their years.

I play ~80 rounds a year, and go through 6 or 7 bottles of sunscreen. After a visit to my skin doctor last year, I started wearing a wide rim straw hat. I don't particularly like it, but it helps keep some of the sun off my neck. Nobody needs too much sun. When you consider that the players are out there for 5+ hours a day 5 or 6 days a week, I see why they go for the protection. I may pick up a set of sleeves this year to give them a try.

I think the gals are going more & more for long sleeve lightweight tee-shirts to wear under their golf shirts. The "sleeves" that are on the market aren't all that comfortable...they slide around some and there can be a little gap between where a short-sleeved shirt & the "sleeve" don't always meet. It'd be a funny-looking little sunburned strip. I tried the sleeves once and they drove me crazy...they wouldn't stay up where they belong.

The ones I have--Nike dri-fit solar sleeves--fit very securely and don't slide at all. That may be because, you know, I work out and stuff :bb2: . Seriously though the problem I have is that they feel funny, especially in humid hot weather. Restrictive. I keep thinking that it's just taking me some time to get used to the feeling of compression. I noticed Brittany and Morgan's sleeves looking extremely tight, like overstuffed sausages, but that is clearly not affecting their performance.

Yes, in many Asian cultures, being dark is a sign of the lower class. So I've read.
[/quote]

Correct. It's a sign that you work in the fields all day.

Had a friend from SIngapore that went to Spain for a week in 30 degree heat. I thought the weather would be awesome. She apparently spent the whole time under a large hat and all covered protecting her procelain skin. I lol'ed

I much rather date a lady who works (be it in a field) than one that does nothing.

The long sleeve sun tees help a lot as do wide brimmed hats. Unfortunately, most people start worrying about the sun later, when the damage inflicted as a teenager is starting to show back up. You don't see younger people in sleeves and big hats.

Maybe a little cultural persuasion to cover up in the sun is a good thing. Not only do the Asian ladies wear the sleeves but they have their own style of very large brimmed hats and sometimes surgical style masks for the golf course.

As a Melanoma Cancer survivor, I know the benefits, and consequences, if not being fully protected against the sun. When I got that call from my Dr that told me of my positive result, I was scared.
Thankfully it has not resurfaced in the two years since my operation. I am at stage 1b and go for full body exams twice a year.
My advice? Get educated about the dangers of the sun. I really think young people, especially young women are very susceptible to skin damage. Lots of "competition" out there.
30 SPF is all that is needed. Anything above that you are wasting $$.
I buy a lot of sun protection clothes from a website called sungrubbies. There are others of course. And Nike is beginning to have more and more.
By the way, I'm fair skinned.
But please, get educated about this. Check out the Skin Cancer Foundation website. Please!

Can somebody please tell me where to purchase the long sleeve  sun tops that the ladies are wearing?  The only ones that I have found are way to lose and not comfortable.

There are generally three types. You have your basic sun sleeves that cover only the arms. Friction holds them up.

Then there's a full long sleeve base layer. There are ones that are fairly loose, and ones that are compression fitting.

Finally there are "shawl" sun sleeves that have a partial top that loop around the upper part of the back.

What type are you looking for? All are available on Amazon from multiple companies.

I love the sun sleeves as I’m very Irish and don’t really like putting too much chemical on my skin and don’t like the “mineral” sunscreens that make you look like a white clown. They actually make you feel a little cooler and completely block the sun. Plus they make me feel like a superhero. The Nike and under armour are the best
