Graphite shaft tip prep.

When removing the paint from the tip of a graphite shaft how far beyond the hosel do you go?

I use 400 grit paper to remove the paint about an 1/8" beyond the hosel.

Would like to hear what other club makers do.

I do about the same, slightly above the hosel.

I try to abrade it a little under the ferrule, maybe just remove the slick and give the glue a foothold. I also take a wire bore brush to the inside of the ferrule and then use alcohol to clean both. I hate slipped ferrules!

I use a utility knife to remove the paint. Scrape toward the tip end while keeping the blade perpendicular to the shaft. I usually scrape to approximately half way up the ferrule. Then I lightly finish with a green scotchbrite pad.

Sanding the paint off can damage the graphite fibers and reduce the tip diameter.

I use a round rat tail file to abrade inside the ferrule, I like your idea of using a wire bore brush, going to try that on my next install.
I also use alcohol on the shaft tip and ferrule and use brake cleaner and Q tips to clean the hosel bore

I never had a problem using 400 grit paper but I going to practice your tip on using a utility knife on an old graphite shaft.

Just for the record I said sanding CAN cause damage, not WILL cause damage.
