Golf slang you created

A few 30-capper terms:

 

* Bonnie - a drive or long fairway shot that gets a little help from the cart path. Explanation since it's pretty trivia-based; the song "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean" is notable as the first known use of the "follow the bouncing ball" sing-along prompt.

 

* Duffhammer(s) - thick-soled game improvement irons, like the G10s I shoot. Alternately, a shot where the clubhead comes away with a nice big clump of dirt or wet sand stuck to the face. Both were originally "clodhammers", but that turns out to be beef industry slang for the rotator cuff, which will get pretty involved as well after a few turfed shots.

 

* Sergeant Major - A score of 6 involving a three-putt; "Three up, three down".

 

* String of pearls - a good, clean performance on a hole, requiring the "stringing together" of several good shots.

 

* Warthog s**t - the exact opposite; a sequence of extremely poor or unlucky shots. Taken from a Mythbusters episode, "Poop Polishing", where while collecting the... central material for the myth, they found a specimen in the warthog pen that was particularly lumpy and strung together with straw.

 

* Bong hit - a skulled chip or pitch shot that "burns the green".

 

* Jet ski - a worm-burner over dewy or wet grass, so named because of the nice rooster tail of water kicked up on its way out.

 

* God Toss - A ricochet out of A stand of trees back onto the fairway, especially if the bounce adds distance from the point of impact, and especially when playing on Sunday.

 

* Toe jam - the green spot of smashed turf left on the clubface after hitting out of rough, especially after a mishit.

 

* Channeling - making a particularly excellent shot, in execution and results, in a clutch situation. As in, channeling the spirit of a much better golfer, cause there's no way you'd have made that shot yourself.

 

* Van de Velde - a terrible score for a hole caused by choosing a risky shot strategy that backfires. After Jean Van de Velde, who lost the 1999 Open Championship to just such a sequence of ego-driven decisions. My playing group will mark a "V" on the card after such a performance.

One we did invent was GoooShaahh. It means good shot. We were at a muni in Tacoma when a tour bus full of Japanese golfers got dropped off. We heard that all day long. It stuck. Apparently, it's more cost effective to travel to the US and play at reasonably priced courses than to even think about playing in Japan.

 

Been using that for a long time now. If someone is having a bad day but finally hit's a good one I will usually say in my best try at a female Asian voice "Good Shahhh. Ewww, you big boy. You big hitter." That usually gets a good laugh and lightens the mood a little for the person having the bad day.

 

 

A lot of these are pretty common. Probably some of the ones I have listed as well.

 

A Gump - Any shot, good or bad, that runs when it needs to or a poorly struck shot that needs some run to not be so bad. While the ball is running you say in the voice of Jenny "run forest, run".

 

<My Last Name> with 'd after it - Any shot where you get an 'unlucky' bounce or lie.

 

Paging Dr. Wayright - Any shot well to the right

 

Taint - A shot/putt that hits the back of the hole and bounces out

 

Ryan Howard - Anyone that can hit a long one sometimes but most of the time is hitting bad drives. Haven't run into a whiffer yet but then it would also apply.

 

Nice 9-iron - What I say when I smoosh a drive far past another player who is obviously playing from the wrong tee box (said to the guy playing the wrong box not about my shot).

 

Fred - Any and all older course rangers that are a bit clueless.

 

Donk - A poorly struck shot that doesn't go far

 

Toe Pick - a toe'd shot with any club (Said like the chick from the movie The CUtting Edge).

 

Hanson Brother - 3 bad holes in a row

 

Shagalotapus - A good friend called himself this after we were paired up with another twosome. I introduced him as a Shankapotomus and he quipped back "nah, I'm a Shagalotapus". Good times.

 

Hanz and Franz - Someone who makes a bad choice of shot after ignoring your (solicited) advice and then gets in more trouble. After the shot I give them the "Listen to me now and believe me later" speech.

 

Furyk - Anyone with a funky swing.

A couple of guys I play with will yell 'Caw Caw' if you hit a great shot or sink a birdie. You'll also get a 'don't leave me hanging' for a missed fist pump after a good shot. We've also got 'you're in fussy land' for a poor short drive. Fun group to play in at the very least.

I like "Towardness." As in that putt had good speed but the towardness was off.

If someone hits an aggressive approach that rolls over the hole, lips out or hits the flag I have occasionally asked "Haven't you heard of foreplay?".

"Overcooked" When I'm playing an iron off a tee and planing a high draw and it falls off the green

"Fatty". When I'm playing a standard uphill greenside bunker shot and hit more sand than I want and comes up short

"Drainer". Short putts that I play firm either slams into the back of the cup and falls or lips out
