Asembling my first set of irons?

Funkey

Recommended Posts

So I'm getting ready to put together a set of irons. First time doing this so I don't have many tools.

I'm ok with the procedure as I have looked at some utube's on this. I'm going to use 18 hour shaft epoxy to put them together. The shafts have grips already installed and they are Project X shafts. So I would like the grip ID turned down and the shaft labels turned up.

So: 1. Is there a good way to aline the head so it matches the way I want the labels to look? 2. When you have the shaft installed and glued. The head is in the proper position. How do you keep it from moving until it dries?

Thanks

Without tools like a swing weight scale you are likely to have swing weights all over the place. Not an ideal spec. If you want to do it correctly - invest in a scale and tip weights at the very least.

After applying epoxy and installing the head to shaft - wipe ALL remnants of epoxy and just carefully place the club with head on the workbench and butt up on the wall.
You may have to tweak it but they will be fine.

You'll want to make sure to poke a hole in the grip tape at the butt end to allow air to escape. And of course +1 on the SW scale...

Use a narrow piece of tape to mark where the shaft and hosel line up. Put it in the vice first, line up them up as good as you can and mark it with tape. (not a marker as you might erase the lines as you clean up the excess epoxy)

Once you set it down properly it won't move. They do sell clips to hold them in place but I can't see them being very necessary. I made a functional drying rack out of a cardboard box. I just cut one piece like dental molding and screwed it to the side of the bench. Then another 90* piece taped to the floor. It works slightly better than just the bench.

Thanks for the tip on the swing weight I did not think of that. You can buy tip weights to fit into the tip end. I'm guessing you fit the weight in the tip put the shaft in and check the swing wt. You can then keep all the clubs in the set at the same swing wt?

Next question is where is a good place to buy a weight scale? What weight should you have the swing wt set at?

Thanks for the Help!

Unless the shaft pulls are from the exact same set of heads you are using, the finnish club length is very likely going to be off in some way - either longer or shorter than standard. You should always measure length and trim/extend the shafts as needed otherwise you clubs may not fit you properly.

Check you local Criag's list for a scale- if not- you will have to spring for one on Ebay of Golfsmith. I would advise against the very cheapest model. It's a tool will will have for a lifetime so buy a good one. When you get the shafts- more than likely the tips will either have a tip weight or epoxy inside the shaft- you will need to remove this to get new weights in them. Heat them and pull the weights and run a drill into the tip to remove unwanted epoxy. I would remove the grips so the the lengths can be accurately measured and cut if necessary prior to swing weighting. Always people here to assist, so don't get in a hurry and botch the job.
