WGC - Cadillac Match Play

=======================

• FIELD: The 64-man field is set.

• FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 550 points.

• COURSE: TPC Harding Park, 7,115 yards, par 71. First opened in 1925 along Lake Merced, the Willie Watson/Sam Whiting design is enjoying a second heyday following a major restoration to save the historic course from decay. Best known for producing U.S. Open champion Ken Venturi and longtime host of the San Francisco City Championship, Harding Park fell into disrepair in the 1980s until former USGA president Sandy Tatum stepped in. Backed by the PGA TOUR, the course underwent a 15-month renovation with the intent of hosting a WGC event. Tiger Woods won the 2005 WGC-Cadillac Championship at TPC Harding Park, beating John Daly in a playoff, and the Presidents Cup made a visit four years later.

** TPC Harding Park will be rerouted for the WGC this week. Front 9: 10, 11, 12, 13, 4, 5, 6, 2, 3. Back 9: 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 1, 7, 8, 9 **

• CHARITY: The First Tee is the primary beneficiary of World Golf Championships events. Proceeds are shared with local charities, which have received more than $14 million since the tournament’s inception in 1999.

• FIELD WATCH: New Masters champion Jordan Spieth and world No. 1 Rory McIlroy head the revamped brackets as all but two of the top 64 players in the Official World Golf Ranking converge on the California coast. … Former world No. 1 Luke Donald will bypass the event to attend his brother’s wedding; Tim Clark is sidelined with another elbow flareup. Their absences open the door for No. 65 Miguel Angel Jimenez and No. 66 Francesco Molinari. … Phil Mickelson will compete for just the second time in the past six WGC-Cadillac Match Plays, as the previous date usually conflicted with his children's spring break.

• LARGEST MARGIN OF VICTORY: 9 & 8, Tiger Woods def. Stephen Ames (1st round, 2006 at La Costa Resort & Spa).

• LONGEST MATCH: 26 holes, Mike Weir def. Loren Roberts (1st round, 2003 at La Costa), and Scott Verplank def. Lee Westwood (1st round, 2006 at La Costa).

• LAST YEAR: Australia’s Jason Day survived Victor Dubuisson’s display of escape artistry down the stretch to finally claim his first World Golf Championships trophy with a birdie on the fifth extra hole at Dove Mountain. Day stood on the verge of winning at 2-up with two holes left, only to see his French foe sink a 15-foot birdie putt at No. 17 and win the 18th with a par-save from the bunker. Dubuisson went long with his approach at the first extra hole, but hammered his pitch through cactus needles and a TV cable to see it crawl within 4 feet for par. The next hole was much the same, as Dubuisson whacked a wedge through desert bush and rocks to save par again. Three holes later, Day finally ended it with a pitch to 4 feet for a winning birdie.

• STORYLINES: A new round-robin format in the opening stage keeps everyone around through Friday, eliminating the specter of a “Bloody Wednesday” that has sent top draws packing after one round. Players now are grouped into 16 four-man pods, with group winners moving into a single-elimination bracket for the weekend. … Each of the top 16 in Monday’s Official World Golf Ranking will be placed atop a group, with the other slots filled via blind draws from players ranked Nos. 17-32, Nos. 33-48 and the remainder. … Day, already a 2015 winner at the Farmers Insurance Open, seeks to join Tiger Woods (2003-04) as the WGC-Cadillac Match Play’s only back-to-back champions. He now sports a 14-3 record in the event, having reached the semifinals one year earlier.

• SHORT CHIPS: England’s Andy Sullivan, twice a winner in South Africa this year, and Ben Martin (Shriners Hospitals for Children Open) are set to make their WGC debuts. Nine others will tee it up in their first WGC-Cadillac Match Play. … The old format produced 39 first-round upsets in the past three years – a 40 percent success rate for the underdogs. Two of those three opening rounds ended with 15 upsets. … The event will be on the move again in 2016, relocating to Austin, Texas, and a date two weeks before the Masters.

• TELEVISION: Wednesday-Thursday, 4-10 p.m. ET (Golf Channel); Friday, 5-10 p.m. (GC); Saturday, 3-7:30 p.m. (GC), 7:30-11 p.m. (NBC); Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (GC), 2-6 p.m. (NBC).

• RADIO: Wednesday-Friday, 4-10 p.m. ET.; Saturday, 3-11 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. (PGA TOUR Radio on SiriusXM and PGATOUR.COM).

WGC-Cadillac Match Play's new drawing process

Players will be selected from four pools to establish group match-ups

March 18, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO – Tournament officials at the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Match Play announced today a new selection process for how the 16 groups of the event’s new group-play format will be determined. As previously announced, the top seed for each of the 16 four-player groups will remain the top 16 players in order of their position in the Official World Golf Ranking. However, on Monday, April 27, at noon ET, the remaining three players in each group will be determined by a blind draw from each of three pools depending on their standing in the OWGR. The World Golf Championships-Cadillac Match Play comes to TPC Harding Park in San Francisco from April 27 - May 3 and will feature 33 hours of live coverage on Golf Channel and NBC, the most ever for this event.

Under the guidance of the PGA TOUR Competitions Officials, the drawings will be from Golf Channel’s Golf Central studio in Orlando as part of a live telecast. The 90-minute selection show will televise the draw, analyze the groups and feature live shots from San Francisco to get comments and reaction. Groups will be posted live to PGATOUR.COM and fans will be able to follow analysis and commentary throughout the draw. A live stream will also be available at PGATOUR.COM and GolfChannel.com through the Golf Live Extra application as well through the PGA TOUR mobile apps.

With the new format in place the three remaining pools will be as follows:

• Pool 1 – Players seeded 17-32

• Pool 2 – Players seeded 33-48

• Pool 3 – Players seeded 49-64

“We think this model for determining the 16 groups at the Cadillac Match Play will add intrigue and excitement to the event,” said PGA TOUR Executive Vice President, Chief of Operations Andy Pazder. “This system maintains competitive balance in each of the 16 groups, yet allows us to create discussion and conversation over a variety of platforms when the groups are announced. This will enable the Cadillac Match Play to have a unique live draw announcement.”

“I think this is a very cool concept,” said No. 1 player in the world Rory McIlroy. “I’m excited to see who I end up paired against. The new group format as a whole is going to make for a very exciting three rounds.”

Each four-man group will play round-robin matches on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The player with the best record in each group advances to the Round of 16 for single-elimination match play (in the event of a two-way tie in a group, head-to-head results will be used as the tiebreaker; a three-way tie will require a sudden-death playoff). After the three days of group play are completed, the Round of 16 will be played Saturday morning, followed by the Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon. The Semifinals will be Sunday morning, followed by the Championship Match and Consolation Match on Sunday afternoon. This means that fans are guaranteed to see the field in its entirety during the first three days of competition before players begin being eliminated.

Fans can add their own flavor once the groups are chosen by playing along with the PGA TOUR's World Golf Championships-Cadillac Match Play Fantasy Game presented by Dell.

The event is the only official tournament on the PGA TOUR schedule with a match-play format. The tournament moved from a traditional February date and will now be held April 27 - May 3, the week prior to THE PLAYERS Championship, and will be televised live on Golf Channel and NBC in the U.S. with 33 hours of coverage, including Saturday’s primetime coverage on NBC following the network’s coverage of the Kentucky Derby.

Selection Show Broadcast Details:

• Live, Monday April 27, 2015, Noon Eastern

• Live coverage on Golf Channel’s Golf Central Special

• PGATOUR.COM and mobile apps will include a live stream, live brackets, commentary and analysis

• GolfChannel.com live stream via Golf Live Extra, including live commentary and analysis

I think Rory is a big loser in this draw. Horschel, Snedeker, and Duffner can all be pesky for a round or two. The saving grace for Rory is that Horschel, Snedeker, and Duffner have all been off-form a lot lately. But, match play is always a bit of crap shoot.

I would not really want to tee it up against Graeme McDowell in match play, either.

Justin Rose and Patrick Read got nice soft groups. I think you can pretty much pencil them in for the weekend.

Spieth didn't draw a murder's row. Westwood will be cagey, but unless he holes a lot of chips, Spieth's putter should prevail over a rapid declining Westwood. Ilonen and Every don't seem to be riding hot hands. The Arnold Palmer win looks like a fluke that hasn't been backed up at all before or after.

This photo really captures Rory's season so far. He seems quite bored by it all.

Seems focused...on something

Rory McIlroy is going the extra mile to ensure he's at ringside for Saturday's mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

The world No 1 will be playing in the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship in San Francisco this weekend, but will make the 570 mile trip to the MGM Grand before heading straight back after the fight.

This will mean, if McIlroy is still around after the quarter-finals of the Championship on Saturday, the sports fan will fly by private jet to the fight, before completing the 1,140 mile round-trip in order to get up early for the semis the following morning.
