This is not a Tiger thread like the other gazillion Tiger threads. Plus, Rory would drum roll Tiger right now. 5&4 or worse if they met up in match play.
Yea but what would he do with Spieth ? Rory is Impressive when he's on. But let's not pretend he beat Spieth , mickelson and stenson to win the match play. Yes furyk is ranked 5th but we all know he has one of the worst match play records on earth . Something about the format left all top names out except Rory. And he got in by sinking a long one. Can't put my finger on it but something about the format just bored me to tears. Why not play it as sudden death? Winner take all. Also not a fan at all of these consolation matches. Why would we want to see two eliminated guys play?

Over the next 10 years, Rory will play in 40 majors.

If he wins 10%, that is 4 more. 20% is 8 more by 36 yo.

20% is a littlish less than 1 per year.

He could win 30% of his majors, say 1 of 3 starts for the next 5 years.

That would be incredible.

And he would have 10 or 11 majors by 31.

Thats what it would take to track TW and Jack
He has won a major per year over the last 4 seasons. If he keeps that going, he is going to have a huge pile of them 15 years down the road. I don't think his body will fall apart like TW's. He hasn't had anywhere near as many injury problems so far (TW even had knee surgery as a teenager). I think Rory's smooth tempo will serve him very well into his 40's like Els and Mickelson or Snead.
I think he's going to have back problems in his late 20s, early 30s. Just my opinion. There are reasons only one person has won 18 majors, the biggest one being it's really hard to do. To maintain that pace long enough? We all thought Tiger was a done deal, and then, guess what??? he wasn't? Tiger was going to have 10 Green Jackets, but guess what??? he doesn't. Why?? it's easy to run away with enthusiasm with the latest greatest young player, but ..

These things are HARD to do.

embrace the present.

FORE RIGHT!!!!

The format left the Top players out? Seems to me they lost their matches, and that's why they were left out :dntknw:

But you do illustrate why there isn't more, and why there shouldn't be more, matchplay events. It's different and it's fun once in a while, but it doesn't usually identify the best player of the week.

There's a different set of challenges involved in matchplay that doesn't make it any less worthy than strokeplay.

First of all shooting lights out in one day can get you far in strokeplay. In matchplay that will only win you one match, you have to show up every single day. In that way it rewards consistency.

Secondly, you have to adjust your expectations mid-round which brings it more in line with other sports. If the player you are playing is getting birdies all around him then you're going to have to attack the pins. Meanwhile in strokeplay, the only time that sort of reaction comes in is in the final round. On Thursday, the players will be trying their best to get the best score they can. But middle of the greens will still do the job. As you saw with Rory McIlroy this week, matchplay often asks you to pull off the big shots everyday and do or die situations are much more frequent. So it's generally interesting to watch.

Strokeplay is dull outside of the Majors - matchplay is far better to watch, and engage the viewer over 4-5 days.

In my never ending quest to take the WGCs around the world (novel concept) why not make all 4 of them matchplay events and take them to iconic courses where the lack of spectator facilities would be less of an issue. Have one in Australasia, one in Asia, one in Europe and one in Africa or South America?

Part of the lack of golf's appeal is that it's quite often the same players playing the same courses using the same rules and format, with most grinding out a living rather than playing for a spot in the next round.

Don't get me wrong...I like it and wee die hards like it, but that's pretty much it. And this tags to the end of Bingo's post, but unfortunately bringing out new formats confuses this much sought after "casual fan" that everybody clamors over.

Look at the one Stableford tournament. Stableford is a wonderful format, that if it caught on, would alleviate some of the slow play and frustration that the casual player experiences. But do you think anyone pays attention long enough to realize what's going on? Hell no.

My opinion is that between the WGC, The Volvo and the RC/PC we have enough Match play on TV in a year. If there was enough interest in more, then there would be more.

1 vs 1 golf isn't made for live television. Good for a highlights show but not when you have to wait on them to walk up to every ball and there's nothing really else on the course.

On Sky Sports they spent more time replaying old shots to fill in the gaps than the actual match itself. Which a pity because it is a great format.
