Losing a Tillinghast course is a tough one.

http://patch.com/illinois/northbrook/green-acres-country-club-planned-development

NORTHBROOK, IL - A developer has plans to replace the Green Acres Country Club in Northbrook with a residential development.

Swanson Development has a deal in place to purchase the club and plans to remove the 18-hole golf course and replace it with a mixture of townhouses, single-family homes, assisted living and mixed use developments, according to a Northbrook Star report.

While the golf course will be gone under CEO Rick Swanson’s plan, the clubhouse, Olympic swimming pool, tennis courts and paddle-tennis building could remain. About 40 percent of the property will remain open space.

Even after the sale if official, Swanson will still need to have the zoning in the area switched from “open space” to allow his plan to move forward. Officials have previously warned residents the development of the large Dundee Road parcel could create traffic issues and cause a sharp enrollment increase in Elementary District 28 and High School District 225 schools.

According to its website, the Green Acres Country Club "was established in 1943 and incorporated on January 11, 1944, but the golf course dates to 1924, when legendary golf course designer A.W. Tillinghast lent his world-renown skills to developing what was then known as the Illinois Golf Club."

Swanson told the Star the sale agreement has been signed and that the golf club could close by the end of the year.

Six rounds in Dallas late next week. The forecast calls for morning temperatures in the 30's, with a high reaching maybe 50 degrees, and a chance of rain. Oh boy! Can't wait! Lol. One of my rounds will be at the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas course, which hosts the PGA's AT&T Byron Nelson tournament.

For the money I'm paying, I better! :D Playing the course requires a night's stay at the Four Seasons. I already had an argument with them regarding the "resort" fee. Given that I'll be checking in late, checkout out early, and with the temperatures in the 30's, I don't think I'll be using any towels at the outdoor swimming pool.

I'll also be playing The Tribute at The Colony, Old American, Cottonwood Valley, Cowboys GC, and Grapevine GC.

Tiger Woods announced as lead designer for restoration of Jackson Park and South Shore:

http://www.golfchannel.com/news/golf-central-blog/report-tiger-named-lead-designer-chicago-course/

Wow. Simply wow. I thought the talk about a new course on the site was a pipedream. Never thought anything would come of it, especially given the sad finances of the city. How on Earth are they going to pay for it? I can't imagine that they'll be able to charge enough to recoup the costs. I have to believe also that they'll give discounted green fees to city residents. JP is the only 18 hole city course on the south side.

No doubt. The original concept called for a high end course on the lakefront. If they actually pull it off, it could be amazing. The devil is in the details though. Not sure about Tiger as the architect, though. I'll withhold final judgment until the details are announced. However, I'm stoked. Having lived in the south Loop for years, and having a soft spot in my heart for JP, I'm thrilled with the idea of a great course in the city so close to downtown.

Not sure if any of you are aware but one of our own, Waterboy aka Matt, was one of the lucky recipients of the recent Callaway trip/fitting, etc. Pretty awesome write up on the trip!

DP - I just threw my review up there. I'm no Matt, that guy could play.

Feel free to ask any questions you have about the trip.

Thanks. I know it doesn't meet the "where are you playing " criteria but DP noticed a familiar name and wanted some feedback. I plan on doing a small write up on Torrey South.

I love JP despite the fact that it redefines urban golf. I've found lots of empty 40 oz bottles of Steel Reserve 211 on the course as well as the foil that crack comes in. No two courses have the neighborhood come more into play than JP and South Shore, so if Tiger, Rahm, and their boys turn those places into decent courses and build a championship facility capable of hosting a tournament, I'm guessing that will accompany the redevelopment of the entire South Shore neighborhood. Of course, the 1992 Chicago Worlds Fair that never actually happened was really just a cover to redevelop the South Loop by the mid-to-early 90s. I'm guessing this is part of the city's plans to eventually redevelop the far South Side.

Another crazy season comes to an end. I didn't quite reach the 110 round milestone of 2015, but I sure came close at 108 rounds. Late November and early December weren't as kind this year. Considering that we got off to a late start this season with a cold and wet March, I was surprised I made it to 100 rounds.

I played 81 different courses this year in 9 states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Colorado, Nebraska, and Texas), compared to 67 courses last year. Of those, 55 were first time visits, 10 more than last year. 100 new courses in two years is pretty nuts. I managed 19 new ones in the Chicagoland area, bring my total to 139.

My major goal for the season was to lower my index by a few points, mainly by improving my putting and scrambling. I accomplished that goal. My fairways went from 10.3 to 9.2, and the GIRs went from 11.2 to 10.3. The GIR's did peak at 11.7 in September, so there was some improvement before the cold arrived. OTOH, my putting average dropped 0.5 strokes (31.2 to 30.7), and my scrambling increased from 29.1% to 39.3%. I think it was a combination of better (approach) misses, better chipping, and slightly better putting (w/ new putter). The scrambling percentage is the highest it's been since I started tracking it in 2010.

I put a new counter weighted mallet putter in my bag at the start of the season, which I believe was the key to the improved putting stat. I believe I made many more 4 to 8 footers. Lag putting has never really been an issue. I swapped my 5 wood for a 7 wood last month, but it's still too early to call there. I also swapped my Mizuno wedges for Cleveland RTX's this year, but there's no love there. 'Too clicky. I think I'm going to give the Callaway MD3's a shot next season, and eventually wind up back at Vokey. I may also go from a 3 wedge setup (52, 57, 62) back to a 4 wedge setup (52,56,60,64), but it would require dumping my 4 hybrid. I think that will depend on how well I hit the 7 wood, and whether it can serve as a 4H by choking down.

I was very consistent last season, and slightly better this year. The high number of early solo rounds definitely helps. My low round of the year was a pair of 69's at Bayside in Nebraska, and Bonnie Dundee. My high score was a 92 at Idlewild in early October, where the usual slick greens and U.S. Open high rough around the greens turned pin high misses into bogies and double bogies.

The highlight of the season was my cross-Nebraska trip in August where I played 10 rounds of golf in 6 days on some amazing courses. If you think you can wing it, a trip to the Sand Hills area of Nebraska is fantastic.

I thought the courses were in decent shape this year, but the greens were rather slow. The late fall is usually a time when we can look forward to speedier greens, given the cooler temps, but they didn't seem to materialize this year. Pace of plan seemed pretty good for the most part.

A few courses decided to disallow singles to book online this year, e.g. Ravisloe. 'Way to encourage people to play golf, gang. Fortunately, a handful decided to change their policy to allow singles. Overall it was a wash for single players.

My main goal for next season is to try to play my 400th course with a round at Pebble Beach. I'm currently at 369 courses, so I'm pretty much on pace if I time it just right. With trips to Phoenix, LA, and Upper Michigan planned prior to my August vacation, a golf trip starting at Harding Park in San Francisco, and ending at PB would be the highlight of the season.

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year, Gang. Here's to 2017.

Kudos to VNutz for turning me on to a Groupon for Bowes Creek. It's a weekday of unlimited golf, a dozen Wilson balls (like I need more balls after the KSig order) and a $50.00 bar tab all for $74.25. Pretty sweet!

I think you can buy 1 and then another as a "gift", but I couldn't get a discount on 2, just one order. Have to use by mid June though so you can't just stockpile.
