Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

February and already pitch marks and divots everywhere. Playing a round at Bartlett Hills. First time, fun little track but the tee boxes on the par 3s are beat to hell. Pace of play is horrible. I understand people being rusty but when all 4 people go to everyone's shot and sit there and convene. Brutal. If not for hopping back on to the front nine I wouldn't finish.

Teed off a couple hours ago. First tee time today I could get as a single was 1:36. Course is packed. Sure it's been like that past few days. Fun little track tho

We talked to the pro on Saturday at check in and he said they had 500 rounds booked over Fri to Sunday and another 200 or so today with the holiday.

Incredible for this time of year. I'm just happy to be outside golfing. Hard to complain when we could just as easily be buried under snow

That's surprising as I didn't feel like the greens were really leaving that many marks, at least not big marks. But go figure with weather like this you'll have a lot of the fair-weathers out that couldn't care less about maintenance.

I had a lot of plugs with the driver, which is uncharacteristic of me. The greens were really soft too. Like, plug half way down on the ball, soft.

I'm not going to complain about course conditions. Its February and I played golf. Now I am sick and trying to figure out a time to get out of here for the day.

I had better stoppage from my driver than any wedge into a green. Driver with -1 yard roll, full wedge bounces and rolls out 10 feet. Just that time of year.

We played the East nine at Sportsman's on Saturday morning and the course was in pretty good condition.

Sunday afternoon at Bonnie Brook in Waukegan. Truth be told - should have gone back to Sportsman's and done a double.

BB was really soft and many shots plugged in the fairway. We maxed putts at a pair due to the conditions of the greens.

That being said, our group had a great time being out together and how can you beat two fine days with your pals? :drinks:

Best news I've heard in years for Chicago golf.. Harborside is being renovated. Removing 2/3rds of bunkers as well as some other changes

It always baffled me why people bother with Harborside. There's literally hundreds of other courses in the Chicago area for people of every skill level and everyone who plays Harborside has nothing but bad things to say about it. Seriously, why drop $100 (or whatever it costs) on a course people just complain about?

I actually LOVE harborside. I probably prefer the Port over the Starboard but I'm not real sure why. The layouts are challenging and the course conditions are usually very good. Sure you can complain about bunkers, but I'm in the camp that they're supposed to be hazards. If you can't afford it, then drive out to the burbs. Location determines price, just like anything.

Ah, Harborside, the course that everyone loves to hate. Thunder Dan, were did you read about the renovation? They told me two years ago that they were going to redo the bunkers, but nothing came of it.

I've always preferred the Starboard course. The Port course is the tougher of the two, and it seems you can get into trouble with a decent shot, whereas you'll only get into trouble on Starboard with an errant shot.

Can't say I find the conditions excellent. We all know the bunkers are complete garbage. Hardpan with the liner coming up in many places. This goes way beyond being hazards. They're real hazards in that you can kill or injure someone when you blade a shot of the sandless greenside ones.

The bigger issue with the courses is the poor drainage. The low points are always wet. They had more cart-path only days last year than in any recent year I can remember. Keep in mind that the course has no natural drainage, having been built on a clay capped dump. Obviously they installed drainage wasn't enough. If they do renovate the course, I certainly hope they add more drainage. The need to redo the clubhouse as well. The "bar" area is designed for banquets, and not hanging around for a drink after a round. I've said it before, they should go steal Lost Marsh's clubhouse, or visit Arrowhead to see how much business a well-designed bar can attract.

For those of us who live downtown, the biggest draw of Harborside is the proximity. It, and Wilmette GC, are the two closest "real" 18+ hole courses. The surrounding neighborhood is a non-issue. I don't know anyone who plays the course who wants to hang out in a neighborhood bar after the round. Besides, the clubhouse is over a half mile from the nearest home, with the Calumet Expressway, err Bishop Ford, acting as a buffer.

Now, I'll believe it when I see it. The course is owned by Illinois Port Authority. Like the state itself, it's on the verge of bankruptcy. There is very little shipping traffic going through the Port of Chicago these days. It'll be interesting to see where they come up with the millions necessary to redo the courses.

Played Deer Creek today, it was a long day. Suppose to tee of at 10:20, got to the course and was advised that there was a half an hour frost delay. Got in line to tee off, and was advised that they were letting members of their league to get earlier tee times. Started at 11:00, got done at 4:00. Shot a 79, not bad for first time out this year, but the constant waiting to hit a shot on every shot hurt my game. Ohh well can't complain about playing in mid February.

My mindset at Deer Creek when it's busy is either get the first tee time or play elsewhere. Honestly, I get there and tee off before the pro shop opens and just pay at the turn. I can guarantee you their "frost delay" was a case of the employees not getting there on time to open the place up.

That's probably what I should have done. The course was absolutely packed, and I don't think I've heard the word "fore" used more in one round than I heard on Sunday. I had to hear it at least twice per hole yelled from various areas around the course. The whole letting league members have early tee times was also upsetting. Ohh well, can't complain about playing golf in mid February though.

Because I can tee off at 7 am and be home by 10:30 most weekends living in the city.

Harborside has problems with turf being soft bc over over saturation and chemicals from the past management company. They are planning on removing many of the bunkers that never come into play for what I assume will be more attention being paid to the ones that do. I think they are also planning to remove some rough and long grass in favor of more run-off areas.

Course has good bones, and best location in the city. Hopefully Kemper hits it out of the park.

Last minute (literally) round at Ruffled Feathers. Teed off right after 10. The course was packed, but somehow we managed to finish in just under 4 hours. The greens were painfully slow (the dew/water) never quite evaporated, making putting a challenge, to as the least. You couldn't hit the ball hard enough to get it to the hole. Otherwise, it was a typical RF experience. Keep the ball in play ( which I didn't), and you can score. Oh well, off to Florida next week for 4 rounds (give or take) at Jacaranda Golf Club.

Harborside is built on sledge and in doing that, they have to keep the grass over saturated or it simply will not grow. The fairways are soft by design because they have to. It's not a drainage issue.

I understand that they have to over water the fairways, but when it's cart paths only two and three days after a moderate rain, it's also a drainage problem.

Does anyone know where I can play 9 on Saturday?

Several of the Forest Preserve courses are open, including Indian Boundary, Highland Woods, Meadowlark, George Dunne, and Chick Evans.

Cog Hill and St Andrews are usually open.
