I'm heading to Ann Arbor tomorrow for 5 rounds, and will be attending the Volvik Championship on Friday. I'll be adding five new courses to my list, Eagle Crest, Washtenaw, Moose Ridge, University of Michigan, and Radrick Farms. The weather forecast looks pretty spotty across the upper Midwest, so I expect to get wet at some point.

Played Schaumburg today, Player-Baer, and the course was in great shape. The greens were really rolling well. I haven't seen the greens this good in many years.

Sportsmans needs to do something about its greens. Way too firm. Fun to putt on, but last night I had 4 shots all with 9 iron or higher, hit the front of the green and roll off the back. But, on the bright side not a single ball mark to be found!

 

I've been alternating play at Sportsman's and Shepherd's Crook. In past years, the Crook was known for faster greens, Sportsman's, for soft and very well maintained greens.

 

Agreed, zer0, Sportsman's has really raised their greens performance a notch this year. They are like tabletops. The softness has left the building.

I played Orchard Valley yesterday, not a bad course, but it is ranked like 6 in public courses online? Seems quite far off. Not sure it is really a top 15 public track in Illinois. Kind of goofy lay out, but decent condition. Doubled 18 and shot 77. Looking to play twice tomorrow, sunrise/sunset rounds. Not sure where yet though.

Played a quick round this morning at Renwood. 2:10 walking. Course was in good shape, but the back greens were sandy, aerated, and wet. Great morning on the course though.

It's always on those lists, very inaccurate IMO. I think the suspicion is that some of the course management companies buy off some of those rankings... I really like the course itself aside from #13, fun layout IMO with multiple ways of playing the course depending on how aggressive you want to be, but the conditioning is almost always suspect.

Didn't play but got to go on a quick tour of Medinah recently redone Course No. 2 which has always been known as the ladies/juniors course.

 

The restoration looks great. Increased green sizes, restored some bunkers and tree removal. Lots of trees removed.

 

Hopefully get a chance to get out there by the end of the season.

I called an audible on Village Links and played HOE instead. Paying $57 to play in the rain didn't sound too appealing. I shot a 75 despite playing in constant rainfall from the 7th hole to the end. I didn't hit a ton of greens but I was close enough to chip and my wedges were sharp. I switched to MP-T5 52 and 58 about 12 rounds ago and I like them a little better than my Vokeys (insert pretentious comment about missing the feel of forced wedges here). Putting Z cords on my irons and fairway woods made a big difference for conditions like today.

Exactly, as in I was playing a cast wedge and missed the feel of a forged wedge (or so a giant db would say). Honestly, beyond a slight click with the Vokeys, there's almost no difference in feel. Performance, on the other hand, has been more consistent.

Had a great outing at Blackstone today.

 

Soaking rain came and hit our 6 foursomes for the last 2-7 holes.

tee times were from 11:00-11:50

The course is in great condition with its fantastic greens and fun layout.

 

Interesting that it has 5 par 5's in a 9 hole stretch from holes 4-12.

Blackstone's catering did a great job for us for our post round dinner.

No. Heard he was out there though. I know a few of the guys on the maintenance staff that took me around.

 

Rees and I have different ideas when it comes to golf course design. He's the one that's made money off of it, I'm just the guy that calls in penalties to the professional tours 3 days after the fact.

 

I know you need some bunkers on a golf course. It just doesn't need to become the Sahara desert.

I decided to make a last minute early morning round at Nickol Knoll, a par 3 course in Arlington Heights. Was a bit more hilly than I thought, though I can always use the exercise. Felt good to carry a bag though. Highlight was the last, pin being 141 away, and I hit my shot to ~18 inches.

 

For $10 a round, I could see myself stopping by once a week or so, in the morning after work, to get a quick round and some exercise in.
