Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

I'm playing Brighton Dale Links: Blue Spruce and Thunderhawk tomorrow. I'm violating my rule about early tee times to avoid slow play by booking a time around 9:30. It's the only way to get the twilight rate at Thunderhawk without waiting too long in between rounds. Props to Thunderhawk for moving their twilight time up to 3:00 from 4:00 though, especially since playing that course for $35 on a weekend in June is a crazy good deal. I wish Stonewall, Foxford, and Oak Grove would follow suit.

Wow, Schaumburg is in really nice shape. They're putting fencing up on the Players side to start the renovation already.

Pace was great at 3.4hrs with 3 guys riding and me walking.

Waking beats riding any day. My back doesn't get all stiff when I walk, it's cheaper, I can walk right to my ball rather than going to the other guy's first, that whole exercise thing. Plus, it's awesome when I get put in a group of guys in carts and I'm walking. They tend to roll their eyes, then I get to the green before they do on every hole.

I've been a cart rider for the past 7 years and kind of forgot how nice it was to walk.

Everything just seems to flow.

And the Clicgear 3.5+ helps!

Played Naperbrook on Thursday from the blues. Was hotter than a pistol in the front 9 getting 2 birdies and scoring a 39. Then in the back, I parred the 10th and 11th holes - thought just maybe I would break 80. Not to be - shot a 42 in the back. Breaking 80 - I've only done it twice. Oh well !

Has anyone noticed with this warm weather the ball just seems to jump off the irons? Usually my 58 degree goes about 70 yds, The last 2 weeks, I've been getting 85-90 yds (w/o high winds) with the proper traj.

By the way, the course is in very good condition including the greens. This course and Prairie Bluffs are very similar (IMHO).

... Interesting as our opinions are so very different. I am not a big fan of Naperbrook's layout or course condition. The greens were soooo chewed up when I played yesterday and of course the fairways are not real fairways like Prairie, just light rough. I find the fescue and overall scenic beauty of Prairie Bluff to always be impressive while Naperbrook has very little of that natural charm. Next time you play Prairie take a good long look on the 15th tee. You are in the middle of the most fescue scenically and you can see 5, 8, 15 and 14 along with a few other holes in the distance. It is one of my favorite views on any golf course.

... That said I do play Naperbrook a lot because it is closest to my house and only $19 to walk 18/$16 at twilight with a senior Brooks Card and I can always get on almost immediately in the afternoon. Especially if I want to play a practice round as I did yesterday. And to be fair I like the back 9 quite a bit more than the front 9. But I have some friends in the area that won't even play Naperbrook. More freed up tee times for you! :derisive:

Have played NB a few hundred times over the last 10 years. It's the go to course for when I need to feel good about my game. It's also about 10 minutes from the house so the convenience is nice. Can't see it being close to Prairie Bluff in comparison though. PB is in much better condition, has elevation changes, is visually appealing, has a much better practice area and the post round options of inside/outside is much better. The staff at PB is awesome, the staff at NB is a bit less than accommodating.

Well I agree PB is in better condition than NB and it has a much better clubhouse and driving range. Funny you mention about NB being your go to course when you need to feel good about your game. That's how I feel about PB where I have carded by best rounds ever. I too have played these courses numerous times.

... Propman you have touched on one of the beauties of Prairie Bluff imo. It is a challenging course from the correct tee's and can eat you up on any given hole and almost always windy. But if you catch it on a calm or slightly breezy day and you are really on, you can go very low there as it's main defense is the wind. I too have shot my lowest round ever there. Something about the very wide fairways and ample rough so you can really hit it off line from the tee with little penalty free's up my swing and I don't miss many fairways. Played Waters Edge in 25+ winds and found myself subconsciously guiding the ball off the tee because it is so tight and rarely found a fairway. Crazy game.

As we know golf is wacky. From 1991 thru last year, we had a permanent tee time at Cog Hill (no Dubs). Logic would tell you that one should score better on courses 1 and 3 vs. 2. Not me - my scores were no different. I play Cinder Ridge maybe 5 or 6 times a year and my scores (on average) were no different from Cog 1 and 3 and even both courses at Gleneagles. Like I said - wacky.

Some years we would take a golf trip to Myrtle and play some difficult courses and I would shoot mid eighties to low nineties and then get home and expect to tear up Cog 1 and 3 and shoot a frickin 98 !

A nice round of at Silver Ridge in Oregon, IL this morning. The course is built on a very nice piece of rolling terrain above the Rock River. It's a decent layout, but the greens are rather ho hum. If they did something with the greens to give them some character, it would be a much better course. A couple of of the holes were challenging driving holes, with a tight chute between the trees. I didn't care for the dogleg 12th, as it was a short club off the tee, and no real way to cut the corner. The scorecard had it down as a 385 yard hole, but there's no way it played more than 320. Conditions were good. The fairways were a bit shaggy, but playable. Greens were quite soft, but rolling nice.

Excellent day ballstriking given the winds, with 9 fairways and 12 greens. I opened with two birdies, and then it was boring golf the rest of the way. The winds didn't really give me many chances to stick an iron close. The highlight of the round was my tee shot on the par 3 2nd. I pulled my shot left, and thought I was in the left bunker. When I drove up my ball was 4 feet below the hole. It must have hit the big tree guarding the bunker.

Overall the course is a decent layout. For $20 to walk, and $35 with cart, it's a bargain. I can't say I'd recommend driving out from the city to play it, but it's worth a visit if you're in the area. It might be a good 2nd course to pair with Prairie View.

Had a great time at the Trent Steckel Memorial Golf Outing at Pinecrest yesterday. My team finished second at -16. I hit one of my longest drives ever at 337 yards representing GolfWRX, but I was one foot off the fairway for the long drive contest. Greens were rolling very smooth, but the fairways were long. Guess that helps them stand up to the heat. Short course at 6,000 yards, but I had a fun time.

Naperbrook this afternoon. Sadly, nearly a 5 hour round. On 16, there were 3 groups on the tee waiting for the 2 some on the green to finish. The remainder of course in front of them was wide open. Hello...Ranger??? They've taken so many trees out the course is even more wide open than before. Conditions were good, far from great. Tons of ball marks on greens. The grass on the range is very spotty although it's nice that they added a ton of targets.

Had the chance to return to the younger days of being GolfWRX long thanks to the winds. Drove 10, reach 18 in two and was pin high in 2 on 7.

Not sure I'll go back there this year. Springbrook has so many more positives from the range to the set up, etc. But hey, it was a great day for a walk.

Stonewall this afternoon. Quite a few three putts early on. The greens were pretty quick and it took some getting used to. The wind was howling, but really didn't affect my play too much. As always, a fun time there.

Hoping the winds die down for tomorrow's round at Bowes.

I'm taking full advantage of the free range and getting to the course early.

I'll try and not start drinking until the 1st hole... :)

I got some revenge at Blue Spruce and shot a birdie-free 37/37 74. The wind was really howling throughout the round but in the hot weather it wasn't a big issue off the tee. The last time I was there it was the same 20+ mph winds but it was 50 degrees. Conditions were a bit different today despite the guys who set up the course making sure it played its maximum length (6687 from the back tees so it's not a monster or anything). For a 9:50 tee time, pace was pretty good and The Bear and I got around in about four hours.

Thunderhawk was awesome. The wind was at its worst for the first four holes so I decided to play from the brass tees (Countryside finally changed it up and went black-blue-green-silver but Thunderhawk is sticking with the douchey black-brass-bronze-silver-auburn tee color combo). Good decision. I made four birdies on 3, 10, 12, and 14 and had a really out of character birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie stretch to open the back nine. There's lots of ways to shoot a low score, I guess. The birdie on 3 was a season highlight. The wind was at its worst (about 30 mph) so I launched a moonshot five wood into a hole playing 184 yards. The ball stuck inside six feet and I made the putt. I shot a 37/36 73 and missed finishing at even par by burning the edge of the cup on the 18th green. Given what a disaster that hole has been for me in the past, I'll gladly take the par and that final score.

Nice shooting at Thunderhawk.

I played there Friday at noon with my work group and it was awesome, as you said.

Shot well for me...but s*** the bed on 17/18. ugh!

got suckered into going for back pin on 17.

Love the course and my swing is getting better and so is my putting, just a few brain farts cost me some strokes on

A very pleasant round at Deerpath this morning. The 3:40 pace for a foursome certainly helped. The course is in very nice shape. They removed a number of trees, and spruced up some bunkers, and it turned out quite nice.

I had a great day driving the ball today, hitting 12 fairways, but the irons were taking a day off. Nine greens just doesn't cut it. Fortunately my touch around the greens almost made up for it, as I scrambled for 5 pars. Two birdies also helped the cause.

Thanks. It's one of my favorite layouts in the Chicago area. The greens there are excellent, but I guess that's to be expected since the course is only open for about five months a year. They aren't lightening quick or anything but they always run at exactly a 10 and they're really smooth. It's like putting in my living room.
