We got out to Koshkonong Mounds this morning. The conditions were great and having the second tee time definitely helped the pace. I enjoy seeing nothing but Illinois plates in the parking lot, but good Lord are FIBs horrible behind the wheel. Why use a turn signal when you're changing three lanes of traffic at 90 mph? Seems safe. Good to get back in the low 70s with a 73. 6:08 AM tee time tomorrow at Prairie Woods. The name sounds contradictory but it's prairie on the front and woodlands on the back. It's a 6200 yard par 71 but it's maintained much better than most country courses.

... Played Prairie Bluff today with my wife and son. Supposed to be 9-10mph winds but more like 15-20 with stronger gusts. Best driving round I have ever seen from my wife. She has not played in a month and I put a CK Blue Tensei in her RBZ HL driver and she was just bombing it high and straight all day long. 200-220 and it was just awesome to watch even though she shot a 99. My son hits it around 300 but is still learning the game and shot a 92 but really a treat to watch him kill a few drives a good 30-50 yards past me. I hit a 285yd drove on 18 with a new Epic/Rogue Black 60s combo and was past him by a couple yards as he missed his a little and I caught my perfectly. Of course I told him I caught it juuuust a little on the toe.

... Prairie Bluff is the best conditioned course I have played this year. The greens are true and relatively fast and the tee boxes and fairways are in excellent condition.

Played Mistwood yesterday. Unfortunately didn't get a break for playing with a member (apparently you get the discount only during the week) , and the round was $110. Ouch... As much as I like the course, buck ten on the weekend is getting up there. I guess mr McWethy is trying to recoup his multi million $ investment. We played (as a foursome) in even 4 hours, which was nice, since 2 of the guys I played with barely broke 100. Course was in perfect condition, but I couldn't figure out the greens to save my life. Started off with a four putt (not a good thing when your first putt comes back to your feet) and threw in couple more 3 putts on the front 9 for a 45. Back 9 went little better though. Birdied 10 and 18 (after reaching it in 2 - driver, 4i to 15', just missed the eagle). When the dust settled, carded a much needed 37 on the back to make the final tally little more respectable.

Nice course but I agree Stan, $110 is a little steep...

Wow, I must have been dreaming. Minjee was wearing a blue top and white skort. So Yeon was wearing the black skort.

It's hard not to go low at Prairie Woods since I gave the course too much length in my last post. It's actually a 6010 yard par 71 and it was playing fast and firm. Still, even par for 18 holes is even par and that's what I got today. Bogies on 8 and 14 were countered by birdies on 2 and 5, though it kind of stung to be -2 through the first seven holes yet not finish under. Conditions were great, though in keeping with true country course traditions we played behind a fivesome who insisted they "played fast." They didn't. I'm gonna miss Prairie Woods since I don't plan on driving out of my way for a 6000 yard course. Every summer I play it once and I'll be back in a year. The Broadlands tomorrow. I wish the challenge level matched the numbers there, but the USGA doesn't give out the same favorable rating/slope combos to courses in Wisconsin that they give to places in the Chicago area.

A wonderful morning at Sportsman's. 5:30 start, 9:10 finish. Sunny skies, perfect course conditions, fast greens and some tricky hole placements.

Hit more fairways as I regripped the T800 shaft with a midsize GP to match everything else in my bag and it felt much better control-wise. I should have ordered it that way.

The pair of riders we were matched with were the type to be 25 yards out front before we could shoot.. We didn't mind when they hurried off on the back nine.

Some textbook pars and we stayed for breakfast.

Hope to see some Wrx'ers there.

Played Cantigny yesterday for the first time. Subpar range, but tight, well-kept course. I got blocked out a few times on approaches and that is unusual around here. Great staff, better food, challenging layout, but the greens were not as fast as the difficulty from tee to green was. Great deal for $79.

... If ya need a low round for your confidence, Cog Hill #1 is always at your disposal. $20 at twilight on July 4th ain't bad, so with the Mrs it only cost me $40. And we just about had the course to ourselves. That is a bargain in my book. As long as the greens are in decent shape, it is pretty easy to go low there. Yesterday they were pretty smooth rolling but agonizingly slow. Great for chipping and pitching but putting is difficult on hard breaking putts. Hit it hard enough to take some of the break out and risk running it by or die it at the hole and watch it break twice as much as normal. But other than a few gusty periods, and even then no more than 10-15 mph, it was playing easy with mild winds.

... Combined with a new Epic, that to my surprise longer than I expected, I shot a 68. The first hole, a long par 4 masquerading as a par 5 especially downwind, always makes for an easy start. Two really good shots is an opportunity for an eagle, two pretty good shots a birdie but you can even hit a few bad shots with the 200 yd wide fairway and still make par. Two holes in particular were key to my low round. Playing #11 I pulled my tee shot into the hazard on the left and had to drop. Hit a 195 yd 5 iron to about 6 feet and made the putt to save par. Learning nothing from the previous hole, I pulled my tee shot again on #12 (where I didn't even need to hit driver but on a honeymoon with my Epic) and was against a tree and could only chip back into the fairway. Hit a 95yd sw to a few inches and saved par again. Two holes that could have derailed my momentum and really helped me avoid a let down. To be honest I hit too many loose shots to card a 68 and the fact that the rating is 69.7 tells you all you need to know about the course difficulty, but it was still a fun afternoon.

It was a beautiful day at The Broadlands. It's a Rick Jacobsen course built in North Prairie, WI that I love but that requires an early tee time for hackerish reasons. The sprinklers were on during play for a bunch of holes on the back, which seemed odd since the course was in great shape and was quite busy due to the presence of out-of-towers still around for the 4th. I'd complain if I paid a lot, but, alas, I paid $30. The place is a handicap killer (72.1/125 for a difficult course that, at almost 6900 yards and with plenty of tricky bunkers, water hazards, and thick fescue feels more like it should play a full stroke over par and with a slope over 130) but I wasn't as sharp as I was earlier in the week. I still finished with a 77 with a birdie on the fourth hole, a 184 yard par 3. Back to Chicago area golf tomorrow.

Anyone hear/read anything on the "Preserve at Oak Meadows?" The plan a while back was for a July opening but they're not taking tee times on line as of yet.

Thanks!

From the email they sent out on Sunday. Not committing to a date yet, claiming end of July they'll announce on their website when it will be open. So it sounds like August/Sept. to me.

thanks for posting that up VNutz.

I hadn't seen that yet.

Looks like they are making good progress.

I like the tee markers (we had stained some of them as part of volunteering, but they got most of it done themselves by the looks of it).

Same guy who did Mistwood clubhouse was chosen for the clubhouse at The Preserve at Oak Meadows

I like the logo as well.

Looking at the dupagegolf website for this new video, there is also a link to the clubhouse design information and open house.

Some great materials are available to look over (links are at the top right)

There are three documents:

1) Open house materials with some good project summary information

2) Daniel Wohlfiel's (clubhouse architect) design narrative

3) clubhouse designs presentation

No problem. I'd signed up for the Forest Preserve golf emails as they used to send out special coupon deals for Oak and Maple Meadows. If you want more updates on the course I suggest signing up with that as well.

I'm really looking forward to this, I'll be excited to play it when it opens. Just hope the cost isn't too out of hand.

I played Water's Edge today with a friend from out of town who was looking for a course close to Midway. I don't think there's an 18 hole course any closer than WE and $33 is pretty decent. It was in really good shape and the greens were very smooth. Only the par threes had a bunch of ball marks on them, which was a nice surprise. Holy humidity it was sticky, but the ball was absolutely flying in that heavy air. Three wood and five wood were plenty off the tee for all but a few holes. I shot a 75 with one birdie on 15.

Surely you jest... I miss the days when my brother worked there. I always thought it was a great course with some really fun holes, but without the budget for the upkeep. Sounds like maybe they've figured part of it out.

I have been signed up, but for whatever reason, I haven't been getting any emails.

I updated my profile, so hopefully that will take care of that.

I heard that max greens fee would be $89 to ride and less to walk (green to tee walks are very mininal).

Glad to hear WE's in good shape. Might give it a try. Did you walk or ride?

I walked. The online rate we paid with a cart was cheaper than the walking rate but the starter didn't care if we took the cart or not. I was expecting the course to be kind of dumpy since that's been my experience in the past but it was well-maintained throughout. I'll definitely go back again this year.

Thanks. WE's first few years, the course was one of my favs. The last few times I played, it was a $hit hole. I've also been given a hard time about walking. Hopefully, I can get there next week.
