Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

Walked Oak Grove again this morning and was the only person there. Weather was beautiful compared to yesterday. Felt like ten degrees warmer and practically no wind. My driver has been on fire, only one missed fairway today and it was just off. Iron's are still a mess causing me to miss half the greens. Luckily, my short game and putter were bailing me out. Finished with an 82. I've got to stop missing greens from 170 in.

Played a quick 18 at Springbrook. Everyone must have stayed home to watch the Masters as it was a 2:45 round. They continue to take a ton of trees off of Springbrook and it very different visually. More wide open than I can ever remember. The course is dry but soft, minimal roll out. New sand in the bunkers and if you came in with any height, you were having fried eggs with your round. Both of the Naperville courses have updated technology in the pro shop and everything is done off of iPads. The starter has an iPad and they said the bev cart will have as well. No more little rewards card, update your profile and you're good to go.

Looking for opinions. I am deciding between Ruffled Feathers and Bolingbrook twilights deals. RF is the Arcis pass - basically $30 a month plus $20 cart fee per round. Doing the math, and averaging 3 rounds a week that comes out to $1400. Bolingbrook has a straight twilight membership - $1500 for unlimited twilight golf. Both include range etc.

I did RF last year, and it was pretty good. Not the best course or great shape, but never too busy for twilight times. I have never played Bolingbrook. I am waiting til it is warm enough to go try it. That will obviously be a big factor.

What is everyone's thought comparing the 2? (both include unlimited range)

At this point, proximity to home/work would probably win out.

... One of the best years for new clubs at the 2018 PGA Show in my opinion. New AP2's are just awesome and by far the best AP2's, and a nice touch adding the AP3's on the lower end. I change irons all the time for reviewing purposes but the Taylor Made P790's are just so forgiving and the mid irons are long but the long irons are insanely long. Good luck with your AP's!

Was it too cold for everyone to play or something? Bear and I played at Shephard’s Crook and Glencoe and there were about 7 other people on both courses combined. I guess everyone was comfortable watching CBS pay homage to racism, elitism, and classism heritage at the Masters. You guys do realize that after Larry Elder broke the color barrier at Augusta in 1976, Clifford Roberts (the brains behind the whole concept of the Masters) went to the par three course and blew his brains out? Needless to say, I have some fundamental issues with watching Jimmy Nantz gush to Augusta National over the sound of piped in bird noises. Conveniently, that, as well as some admittedly chilly temperatures, left courses wide open for us.

I've seen your same comment now on two different forums. That was twice too many...

That was my thought too, until I put them both in maps and they are the exact distance in travel time! Ha.. I guess I'll just have to play bolingbrook Thursday and see how I like it. I never hear much about the course, I think it looks like a pretty good deal. I live on 7 bridges, their twilight is 1300, but with no range, and a course I don't love it is out of the picture.

As long as Ruffled Feathers conditioning is up to par I'd go there; it's been sketchy in the past. Bolingbrook is fine, and usually in pretty nice shape, but I just find the course so boring. I've played it several times and can only remember a handful of holes. I like Ruffled Feathers' layout and variety of holes, if only it wasn't surrounded by homes.

Never understood why they didn't put some sort of range in at Seven Bridges, the land just north of it seems ideal. My uncle lives off 14 and you'd think his home would never come into play, but I'm always amazed to go there and find a half dozen balls in his back yard.

... I am not really fond of either course, especially the rock bunkers at RF. Both can get pretty backed up but RF can be ridiculous. Lots of outings and the worst I experienced, in the middle of the week, we pulled up to 3 groups waiting on #12 after a 2:45 minute front and the 3 guys I was playing with just left. It has happened to me several times there. BB can be slow at times as well but faster than RF. Both have excellent practice facilities but BB can have pretty chewed up greens from time to time. I get resident rates but rarely play there. I would much rather play Prairie Bluff which is similar to BB but the greens are always in good shape and it has more wildlife.

I'm a bit behind on the post but we kicked off the season on Good Friday at Willowcrest. All things considering I was a bit surprised at how good the greens were. They have a great collection of Par 5's and Par 3's on that course, wish during prime season the rates weren't ridiculous because I'd love to play it a bit more than we do.

Have not played RF in years. The BB course (while not the most exciting on the eyes) is challenging enough for me.. Also, the short game practice area at BB can't be beat. If I had to make this decision, it would be BB.

More or less agree. RF has been a mess condition wise the last few years, although I have heard last year it was much better. I never really cared for the course, too many goofy holes that feel squeezed into the housing development..like an "oh no we're running low on land how do we make this work" type thing.

I'd say that there are only 3 holes that feel "squeezed", the par 4 14th, the par 5 15th, and the par 4 16th. Otherwise it's a decent layout. Hole 14 is still fun, as it's a good short par 4 that is risk/reward. The only reason the 15th is a par 5 is because of the large tree guarding the green. If that were to blow down in a storm it would be a par 4 easily. The 16th is as tough a short par 4 as they come. Again, risk/reward, but it does feel tight.

My understanding is that conditions have improved, but pace of play still stinks.

Similar to Seven Bridges, Willowcrest could use a range. However, at least the first hole is a bit of a pussycat, so one can ease into the round.

I do believe that WC does get overlooked quite a bit. It's not award winning, but it does have quite a few fun/tough holes. I prefer it to Oak Brook, which gets quite monotonous with the doglegs around the ponds.

Come on, it's unique. How many other times can you play a 90* dogleg 4 times in one round?

You guys are crazy. I haven't even been to the range yet, let alone played this year. Maybe it was the 7 years I spent in Atlanta, but I need it to be 50* to play. Looking like May for that.

... Even though I have been in Chicago since '78 I also still have southern blood in my veins. Born and raised in the south til I graduated from East Carolina and started my career in radio going to Athens and then Columbus Ga. The older I get, the more the cold is intolerable. After spending January in Orlando and 6 weeks in Phoenix coming to an end today, I am not playing unless a 6 is the first temperature number. Sure, on a sunny calm 55* day I might play but those are rare. I am with you, these guys are crazy and while I can deal with a 3 club wind, I have zero interest in a 3 club temperature adjustment. Unless I am loose and swinging freely, a tight cold swing with enough clothes on to have a garage sale, just holds no interest for me. Nor does spending time in an igloo, ice fishing or cross country skiing. A 3 day drive back home and I imagine I will not be playing for awhile. After 35 rounds in 38 days (having to hike when the Mrs visited on the other 3 days) a little time off probably isn't a bad thing and I will be dying to get out when the 60's finally arrive.

I'm one of the crazy guys that's been playing, but I've lived my whole life here. And, I don't have the ability to escape to some place warm and sunny for a few weeks.

There are some advantages to playing in the cold. First, the courses are empty. No pace of play issues. And, it can be quite peaceful being out on an empty course. Plus, after a long winter, its nice just to get out and walk a course again.

Also, I have to say, golf gear has come a long way. Compared to 10 years ago, I can wear one less layer, in clothing that has far less restrictions and that keeps me warmer. I think the term "tech" is extremely overused in golf equipment, but perhaps where it is most noticeable is in apparel. If you only play in ideal conditions it can be hard to recognize, but start moving to the extremes of the thermometer, you begin to see how this new clothing really helps you stay comfortable no matter the conditions.

... My wife is born and raised here so I get it. She accepts winter as a natural occurrence and embraces it with snow hiking, cross country skiing and staying active all winter. I think it is a punishment to those of us not smart enough to move to a warmer climate. I tip my cap to the both of you. It just isn't really golf just like the Sox aren't really playing baseball in this weather. The advice to hold the club like a live bird or the arms should feel like cooked spaghetti is impossible when I am tight and cold. I have a ton respect for anyone that can brave these elements on a golf course, even if I think you are insane. :man_in_love:
