Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

I played Countryside Traditional this morning. It was a swamp, with lots of standing water and puddles in every bunker, but the greens rolled pretty true. The rough was really thick with all the rain we've had the last few days, so missing the fairway probably cost me about 10-20 yards depending on the hole and ball flight. I didn't have any birdies but I also had no doubles. I get a huge kick out of the fact that, despite how drenched the course was, they were letting carts out. Every year, Countryside waits forever to open up, then when they finally do they let the customers just destroy the place.

Just looked at tee times for The Preserve and they have indeed gone up to $84 for the weekend, riding. Not sure what the walking rate is but I'm not sure this is an $84 course.

Anyone played there this season? Conditions?

Played there 2 weeks ago. Here was my report.

Played The Preserve today at noon. Got there early to hit some balls to find out they had a frost delay this morning. No big deal, 20 extra mins. 5 and a half hours later, we were done.

Not sure what was going on but waited on every tee shot and most approach shots. Put a decent back 9 together after posting 2 triples on the front for a 92.

Some of the fairways looked horrible. Greens rolled pretty good and the course was really hard.

For $70 in April was expecting a little better.

Well, today was a 1st for me. Went to Fox Bend and it wasn't as wet as I expected. The surprising thing was that I joined another single and we played a Chicagoland course on a Sunday at noon in 2-1/2 hrs!!!

Good company, quick round, and home in time to watch the tournament (Or take a nap)!! Today was a good day.

Played River Bend in Lisle today. What a sh!t show. Just as I remembered it from several years ago. Too small a property for par 36, full of bad golfers, balls crisscrossing from every direction, long waits between shots and to top it off I was paired with a kid who most definitely places "on the spectrum".

Pass.

Lol. I used to frequent the course, and I thought it was a very nice layout. The basic problem is that it's half a real course, and not a nine hole course. By that I mean that it's not your typical easy nine hole course that caters to high cappers. As such it's much too much for the majority of players.

For a 9 hole course with some true par 5s I've never minded it, but there are definitely some spots that are too tight out there. One of the better 9 holers around DuPage IMO, but that's not saying much. Always a slow play as well.

Downers Grove, and Flagg Creek for that matter, all day over River Bend. Village Links too, if the greens aren't marked up.

... Ran up to Naperbrook at 4pm to get in a quick 9 and the place was empty! A 2some just went off the front so I went off the back and there was absolutely no wind, perfect fairways and soft greens. Had 4 birdies and bogied 15. played in probably 1:15 minutes so went off the back again and just as I left 18 the wind started blowing a good 10-15 mph. Only managed 1 birdie and 3 bogies, one of them 15 again. I have a mental black about that hole for some reason and rarely hit a good tee shot. But played 18 holes in 2:30 minutes. For $20 I have no complaints, even the aerated greens rolled pretty decent and the holes are closing up nicely.

Was visiting home in St. Louis and played 3 rounds. Each day had high temps in the 90s, and it was great! Actually having connections there is nice and complete opposite here, nothing beats free golf. Played Gateway National, which is definitely a top 10 public course in Illinois and Stonewolf golf club, which is definitely not a top 10 golf course in Illinois ha, but fun Jack design. Also played Fox Run a private course in St. Louis county. Usually go there when I go home, only people on the course in perfect firm condition. My girlfriend played there before we met about 10 years ago in an AJGA event, and this was her first time back, so that was fun.

I was looking for a quick 9 holes Sunday morning before meeting my son after he got off work.

We've been bowling in Streamwood so I Googled this course and it was advertised as a Championship level muni. Went out at 8:45 and played Streamwood Oaks for the first time, http://streamwoodoak...om/?page_id=340.

It was soaked but looked like an interesting layout. I'll tell you what, this course gave me all I could handle from the blue tees (3400 yds Par 36) in the very soggy conditions. I walked and it was a great layout. Tees not far from each green, fairways were lush but afforded no roll out. Greens were good but not great. The rough was up due to the weather and it could be deep in some spots!

The course is designed very well and a challenge from the very first hole! You get a break on a very short Par 4 3rd and then the fun starts at the Par 5 4th Where a good tee shot then requires a very accurate approach as the fairway necks down to nothing about 150 in with a marsh running on the right up to the green and trees left. The green slopes severely down to the marsh so accuracy is premium.

The Par 3 5th is quite interesting. The marsh runs down the right however the marsh grass must be 25ft tall and obscures the right side of the green from the blue tee set at 175. There's was a gold tee box behind and right of the blue tees that would be blind at 209.

The 9th is interesting as well. It was about 235 to 255 to the neck of the fairway and requires a nice high shot into a horizontal green with trouble all around.

I was so impressed after the first 9 that I rented a cart and played it again. First round I shot 40 with no birdies, The 2nd, I came to 9 even and short-sided myself in the front right bunker that was hard pack and got it to 10 ft and missed the Par, but came away really loving this course. On Sunday it was $18 to walk and it cost me $18 with the replay and cart for the 2nd time around.

Apparently it gets a bad reviews for slow play and the fact that beginners are out there because they assume it's a typical 9 hole muni, The gentleman running the place even held up a foursome in the middle of the 1st hole so I could play through. It was Mother's Day and the place was deserted, but I'll definitely be back. I want to play it in dry conditions...

Hogan's Secret.......it's in plain sight but not for everyone...

Played Prairie Bluff today. Somewhat windy out there but turned out to be a beautiful day. Shot a 40 in the front 9. A 45 in the back with a snowman on the 11th. Hit into greenside bunker and ball was buried in the sand, Proceeded to hit the ball deeper into the sand so three to get out and a 3 putt.

Anyhoo, back 9 was slow (front was real quick). When we got to the 17th hole, we paired up with a couple of young bucks who were playing the back tees (approx. 7000 yds.) One of them hits a 190 yd. tee shot about 5 feet from the pin (missed the putt though), On the 18th he hit his 125 approach shot within 2 feet and got a bird. After we completed the round I heard him say he did not bogey a hole, Had to ask what he shot - a frickin' 65 and he played for Iowa Unversity.

Wish I had played the whole round with them since I never played with anyone who shot that well. They may have thought otherwise. :busted_cop:

Hey guys, I need a replacement for my buddy who would have to bail after 9 to 12 holes this Wednesday at 11:40 at The Preserve at Oak Meadows. If you have two, there is still 1 slot open on this hot deal on golf now for your 2nd if you want to take advantage of the hot deal. It was $50 w/ fees includes cart.

PM if you want to join. If not, we may try to go a bit early and try to play fast, depending on how many people are out on the course... But at this point, trying to get a sub without time constraints since the tee time isn't refundable...

Thanks!

Last call, get a hot deal on a hot deal, pay me only $40 to play with me and two random hot-deal-seeking-singles (and not the good kind of singles, either) at The Preserve at Oak Meadows with a cart today at 11:40. PM asap.

Has anyone played The Bourne in Marseilles recently? Is the place even open? It seems like an oddball, with no website.

They have a Facebook site where you can view some info on the course. It's generally in great condition but if you're off the fairway, the ball is probably gone. Deep, deep rough. Lots of tree lined holes, water on a few. Not sure if it's even 6,500 from the tips. It was open last year, not sure if it's open now but haven't heard anything to the contrary. It's a very natural course, actually one of the prettiest courses in IL. It's worth playing at least once for sure.

Last second round at Carillon. The greens have gotten little slower since the Saturday,, but overall the course is in very nice shape. Played Red/White from the tips. After donkeying around the front for 43, found some rhythm on the back and shot even par. Only 1 birdie all day, and it came on the vaunted last hole (9 on White). Good things happen when you at least attempt to play it smart. 4 iron, 4 iron, chip wedge to 5’. Back for more at the course on Friday (tournament/outing). Having 2 teeth pulled tomorrow morning - which may be a blessing in the sky (possibly not being able to enjoy adult beverages on the course should help scoring).

Got out to our local muni Renwood last night to play with my dad after work. Course was still pretty wet, but had certainly dried up compared to where it was....

Was just going to focus on irons for the most part as I'm still getting used to the new irons. Only hit 2 drivers and 2 3-woods off of tees. Putter was rolling. 5 birdies on the day along with 12 greens. 34-35 for a 69.

Going to try to play Shepherds or Chalet Hills on Saturday.

... After 2 back surgeries my days if pounding balls at the range are over. I can hit 10-15 balls but I really need to move between shots. Getting out on a back 9 alone is ideal practice as I can hit 4 or 5 shots and them go get them. Gives me a chance to work out kinks or groove my swing when playing well. I absolutely love that kind of empty freedom on a golf course. I played Prairie Bluff last night and although it was windy as usual I was surprised how dry or non wet it was. And you are so right, it was a beautiful warm day with crystal clear blue skies. We're playing Carillon today and glad Stasek gave us a heads up on slow greens so my expectations can be low going in.

The remainder of the week and weekend looks great. With no rain in the forecast until late Sunday, hopefully things will dry out. I'm booked at Harborside Port on Saturday morning, and Willow Crest on Sunday morning. I received my new Ping i200 irons, and am looking forward to putting them in play.

I was originally planning to head to southern Indiana next Thursday for 4 days. However, I'm waffling at this point. The long term forecast down there looks wet, whereas the long term forecast for our area looks good. I might wind up taking a mini vacation in the area, playing a few courses near Morris/Ottawa before heading up to the Rockford area.

Played The Preserve earlier today off the tournament/black tees. First time out there and a great day with a slight breeze and sunny. The layout is not bad with most of the greens large, true and decently fast. I must say though the 10th hole is an abortion. Totally wrong shape green for that length hole. The 13th green isn't much better but it is a par 5 but still. One of my playing partners was not a fan of some serious forced carries off the tee (5th and 13th) even off the blue tees. Another great ball-striking day and got off to a hot start with birdies at 2 and 3. Bogies at 7, 10 and 17 were offset with a couple more birds at 15 and 16. Hitting 13 greens helps.
