Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

Recommended Posts

Just played 18 at Ruffled Feathers. Started at 5:30 and was done by 7:15. Passed 1 group on 16. Nothing like having the course to yourself. Played decent as well. But was unlucky on the front, hit the ball really well but the card didn't reflect that. shot 40 - 36. 3 birdies 3 bogies on the back. I'll take the 76, but could have been better.

Probably my last round until going to Forest Dunes and Arcadia Bluffs this weekend. Excited about where my game is to check those courses off the list.

When you said your last round for a while I was expecting a longer amount of time than 5 days! Lucky man indeed.

Ha! Sorry, didn't mean it to come off like that! Just meant, it is good to play well your last time out before going on a trip.

I managed to get in seven rounds over the extended holiday weekend in southern Indiana (http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1642632-southern-indiana-trip-report-may-2018/). Pretty much the same weather as Chicago, hot and muggy. However, 5 of the rounds were played in 2 1/2 hours, and the other two took 3 hours, so I avoided the death marches.

first 18 hole round of the year yesterday at Deerfield. Felt great during and after. Lack of touching a club since October showed up as my short game was abysmal. Missed a 3 foot birdie putt on 2 and then it was all downhill from there. 6 3-putts and only got up and down 1/8 times from just off the green.

Looking forward to getting some rounds in and seeing that short game come back around.

Really looking forward to my first trip of the year up to Lawsonia in 4 weeks.

For those complaining about the humidity, it's been fairly low (in the 40%s) which is not bad this time of year. 95* is bad though.

Whatever it is, it's certainly a shock to the system compared to the cold start to spring...

The higher the temperature the more water vapor the air can hold. So you could have the same amount of water vapor hanging around, when the temp rises the percentage would drop. Idk, I think walking around on a damp golf course with the sun out, you're going to get that evaporating moisture coming out of the ground and cling right to your skin in addition to the sweat. Nothing a clean damp towel can't fix though!

Sunday in Rockford the temp the course showed was 106. Probably the hottest temp we've ever walked. Fortunately, they had extra water coolers on every other hole as compared to Bartlett HIlls which had no more than 3 on the entire course.

... Pu$$ies! I grew up in Greensboro NC and cannot believe we used to do 4 a days in football camp all august long. Then spent 2 years in Columbus Ga when I was a DJ and virtually every afternoon at the lake where I had a small ski boat, the humidity would be so great, accumulating all day and just pour for about 10 minutes then back to sunny skies. My station manager was the President of the Columbus CC and we could play golf for free. Back then I thought golf was for morons LOL. But at 65 yrs old now, the heat and humidity around Chicago is no joke.

Forgot to add the pollen in the air. Between Sunday and Monday our groups probably sneezed a hundred times. It was crazy insane.

Coming from Phoenix this is an average day. It's the rough after all that rain! Courses are still trying to catch up with the mowing.

Played Big Run Sunday. What a course. Love those old school courses with the tight, giant oak tree lined holes!

Played it from the whites and at 6600 is all you could want...Not a level lie anywhere. Par 5, 610 yd 9th was unreal. All extremely uphill. 2nd shot has to be left side, slope runs extremely right to left. 3rd shot is no picnic to a really elevated green with two tiers....was glad to get out of there with a par. Loved it!

Yeah, the 9th at Big Run is one of the hardest hole sin Chicagoland golf. It requires 3 perfect shots, and the 2nd and 3rd shots are rarely off of flat lies. Add in a 20 mph west wind and it can be driver, fairway wood, fairway wood.

played 27 at blackstone today, overall course was in great shape and a lot more breezy then expected especially from the black tees

was really thrown off by the speed of the greens, the practice greens were rolling a solid 11-12 but on the course it seemed to be barely a 10... normally its backwards

Their practice green has always been a bit faster than the course. I'm not sure if it's the slope on the practice green, but it's wicked.

ahh i see, surprisingly a bit slow especially how dry it was, maybe they're trying to prevent the greens from burning out

Big run... I guess everyone has their opinions on courses. A cool thing about golf, every course is different and everyone likes different things. Played it once, and will never play it again. Good shape, joke layout.

Midlane on Monday:

They didn't open up until 5:50 and we had a 6:10 start.

The course didn't have any water coolers out. The bunkers were baked pretty hard.

They totally overwatered the greens first thing, early putts had water plumes; though they dried out about two hours later.

Course had standing water in unexpected areas.

Daily giggle - our group, plus the groundsman at 15 watching my approach coming in to hit his mower parked on the fringe. He didn't think he needed to move and just waved us up. Sorry Charlie.

Played Big Run from the white tees yesterday with 3 of my buddies. Drove the ball like crap and shot a 93 (which for me is not a bad score on this course). Took a 7 on no.9. None of us are better than a 14 capper and we usually play quickly, It took us 5 hours to play with nobody in front of us!! The rough was just high enough to make it very difficult to locate balls. While I enjoy playing this course - it does beat me up mentally. Not sure why the above poster called it a joke design. I've played this course with low/mid single cappers and seen them have (by far) their worst rounds of the year so when I shoot near 100, I don't feel tooooo bad. :busted_cop:

Just not my cup of tea. Nothing feels good for me there. A bunch of partially/fully blind shots. I haven't been there in awhile, and have only gone once. Maybe I need to give it another shot, but I need some more time ha! I didn't play bad there, I just didn't enjoy it at all and never desired to go back. I'd rather go to Cog Hill or Ruffled Feathers (which has its own design flaws and I am sure people don't like it) if I am in the area.

... Add me to the list of BR haters. I would not play there for free. I don't mind a difficult but fair hole, like #15 at Mistwood. You can bite off as much as you can chew. But if you wanna play safe, you can lay up right of the water and the rest of the way is pretty difficult hitting a long iron or hybrid into a narrow landing area. But hit it farther left, taking on the water and you have an easier second shot or for big hitters, a chance of getting home in 2. Unless you hit a bad shot to the right, you have a pretty level lie. I am one of those that think a good shot should be rewarded and a bad shot punished. Imo BR does neither too many times. Yes, there are a few really nice holes there but all in all just not a place I like to play. I get some love very difficult and unfair courses, I am just not one of them.

... On a different note, I played a course that is the opposite in Cog Hill #1 yesterday. Soft conditions and no wind make it a very easy track and I shot a 68. All 4's and 3's on the scorecard and not surprising when all 3 par 5's are under 500 yds. But the greens are still unbelievably in pretty bad shape. Some putts are fine while others are impossible due to aeration that is almost 2 months old but still visible and bare spots next to clumpy grass?!? Joe Jemsek is rolling over in his grave as this is the opposite of a CC course for the masses. Great deal at $24 for seniors that isn't so great when the conditions are allowed to be so sub par.

Great layout with some of the crappiest maintenance in the area. They might have gone 5 years without putting sand in the bunkers. Looking forward to hearing your review J.
