Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

Played Old Oak yesterday after not having been out there in over a decade. A little short, but the layout was more fun than I recalled and the tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in decent shape considering the time of year. Never had a bad lie in the fairway, and the greens ran fairly close to mid-season average public track speed. The rough was nonexistent, which was a blessing and a curse: there was no real penalty for being in the rough, but the ball just sprinted through it towards trouble. Several areas in the rough around the edges of the treelines were soggy and chewed up with tire tracks, but they were rarely in play. Bunkers had decent sand in them, but quite a few people didn't seem to bother raking...maybe the t-shirt/blue jeans guys I saw out there had something to do with that. Paid $40, which is about right for that track, especially when compared their regular season $67-$83 rate, but I'd go back for one of their lower rates during the full season

Glen Erin and Blackstone on Saturday. Hopefully it's just cold enough that both courses don't get too jammed. Masters Saturday usually also thins out the crowd.

I think the cold, wind, and rain on Sunday will thin out the crowds. The high for the day will be near 40 in the early morning, dropping continuously throughout the day, with 20 to 26 mph winds. There will be a 72% chance of rain/snow. Ugh.

Coyote Run tomorrow morning. Hopefully we'll avoid frost. I think I'm going to skip Sunday.

Just finished my round at Coyote Run. It was 37 degrees when I teed off, and a balmy 45 when I finished. The wind was brisk. I played through a foursome on the 3rd hole, and it was clear sailing after that. Got around in 2:30. The course was in nice shape. I only encountered a few wet spots. The greens still had small punch holes in them, but it didn't really effect the roll. Speed was good.

Very good day ballstriking with 9 fairways and 11 greens. Getting more comfortable with the fade. Only two pulls and one big slice, but they stayed out of trouble. Two birdies offset 5 bogies. With a nice tailwind on 18 I hit a monster drive that left me a lob wedge into the green. Nice way to finish the day.

I'll check the weather tomorrow morning, but I'm expecting the worst.

... Lordy temps and weather can be so subjective. I am not a cold weather golfer and 55* is about my limit at age 66 because my surgically repaired back gets stiff. But it has been in the upper 90's and sunny here in Phoenix for a few weeks now and yesterday it was 74*, cloudy and about 10mph winds. I am embarrassed to say this, but it felt a little chilly. I had to wear a short sleeved wind shirt, and the rest of my foursome wore long sleeve wind shirts. If I were in Chicago right now and it was 74*, cloudy with 1-mph winds I would probably feel like it was a heat wave.

TPC-NBK,

for dry weather, it was pretty wicked out there. the cold and wind had my fingers numbed for the first nine.

at times, I wonder if golf isn't as addictive as whiskey. and I forgot to bring the whiskey.

greens were lightning fast, though they softened a bit as we proceeded.

we paired with a visitor from Boston. great company, good game.

the cafe and halfway house are open for business.

nothing like a good morning game to put one in a great mood.

hope everyone on the board has time and opportunity to get out.

best,

Glen Erin expected and received some really low overnight temps and announced on Friday they wouldn't open the course today until 9:00. Luckily, Bear and I were able to audible to Prairie View, which was in absolutely pristine condition. Yesterday's winds (and the 20+ mph wind we played in today) dried everything out so the fairways were extremely firm, the greens were perfect and running at about an 11, the course was in immaculate shape, and it was almost completely empty. All for the insanely cheap $18 walking fee. I only had one birdie (on 2) but hit the ball very well. Alas, low temps and high winds are not scoring conditions. I was happy with my 77 though.

I was able to play really well at Blackstone, though their combo tees are not as difficult as the blues at PV in my opinion. I had birdies on 1 and 7 and bogies on 3, 6, and 12 for a 73. It wasn't in the same shape as Prairie View, the greens were not as fast or smooth, and there were some wet spots on 14 and 15 but overall it's been taken care of well so far this year. Since Blackstone is the slow play capital of the Chicago-ish area, we caught guys on 12 that had teed off over an hour before we did. If guys in carts are getting lapped by two walkers, something is wrong. Did they let us play through? Of course not.

Pretty much every time we play there it slows down to a crawl. After 12:00 PM the ranger just stops coming out, groups get backed up, and no one does anything about it. Reasons include: inconsiderate bros, really, really old guys, hackers in denim, people playing from the wrong tees, and dummies who mark two foot putts.

Played Oak Brook in the afternoon. Conditions were expected - but not too bad. Had a Tim Cup moment on the benign 5th hole. Pulled the iron off the tee into the pond and after the drop, decided to hit a “Phil” shot. 5 shots later (4 more balls in the water), finally made it to the green (or thereabouts - my ball was resting against the chain link fence, so had to take an unplayable). When it was all said and done, carded a sweet 16. Gotta love golf.

The majority of our weekend rounds there are morning times so probably haven't experienced that.

I've now played The Preserve twice this year. last week they hadn't rolled the greens, yesterday they did. They're in nice shape, well above average for this time of year.

I'd say that's BS, but Carol Stream and Elk Grove Village are both close to Schaumburg and got small amounts as well. Possibly a little pocket there. Something to consider for later in the week perhaps.

five to six inches at Sportsman's. the last flurries didn't really stop until dinnertime yesterday.

arrived in Palatine this morning , there might have been an inch on the ground west of route 53.

quite the difference.
