Played The new Prospect Golf Club on Friday and was pleasantly surprised.

There are others surely more qualified than me to comment specifically on a before/after for some of the holes, but I thought Esler did a great job. The course is challenging without feeling claustrophobic (several fairways were widened) and the greens were in fine shape all the way around. The varied length of the par 3s and 4s was well received (a couple of 440+ and 200+). Lots of places to grip and rip, but also a few to employ some strategery. No tricked up or stupid holes Out there either (paging Art Hills). There were a few ground under repair spots in the fairways but I expect those to be temporary.

Most importantly, they are currently doing 10 minute intervals with tee times and only charging $41 for non residents to walk on a Friday afternoon. If that keeps up, it will surely become a go to for me given its location near my office.

I play at Schaumburg quite a lot, which I like, but this is closer and comparable in quality.
[/quote]

I was actually wondering if they had opened yet. I thought the original date was July 4th but didn't know if that had happened.

I like esler designed courses. He has a good eye when it comes to looking at a hole and getting it to frame well.

Prospect had some re routing of holes to get rid of the garbage that was known as the old 18 th hole.

I'm going to have to give a shot.

If anyone finds my consistency running around loose, please send it back to me. Yesterday at Catigny (Lakeside/Hillside). I have never played the course before and put together a pretty good plan to navigate my way around the course.

Lakeside:
+3,+1,0,0,+1,0,0,0,+3

Hillside:
+3,0,0,+3,0,0,0,+3,+1

3 over par for 13 holes, 15 over par for 5 holes for a marvelous 90. 41! putts.

Anyone have any suggestions on dealing with the "blow-up holes"?

For me, I have a target score in mind at the start of the round, generally 79. Thus, I have 7 bogies to work with. If I get in trouble off the tee, I accept that it might be a bogie hole. If there is little chance of getting to the green in two, I'm trying to pick a spot in the fairway that leaves me a wedge/iron into the green. I may still save par with a nice 3rd, but I'm pretty sure I'll have bogie at worst.

As CL notes, one must avoid heroics. Yeah, they're great when you pull them off, but if a shot isn't 80% certain, I'm playing safe.

I make big numbers when I try to hit hero shots instead of just taking my medicine.

Then don't you take all your medicine on the driving range!

Thanks guys. I hit 5 bad shots that perpetuated the big scores. Take number 9 for example. The short par 4 on Lakeside. (I hit my 3 hybrid off the tees on this nine because of the trouble at 240 yds (my typical drive)) I shank the tee shot with my 3h. I then take the same 3h about put the ball about 200 yds further down the fairway. With about 130 yds I hit a nice 9 iron just to the left of the green, get a kick left into the bunker, hole high. Hit a poor sand shot (sand was not as deep in this bunker and I didn't adapt my shot), then three putted for a 7. My putting is killing me along with the missed swings. I can't seem to move from the practice green to the course. I'm going to keep grinding.

Were you aiming at the flag with your approach, or the fat of the green? Safety first.

yep, skip em. :)

J/K, what has helped me reduce blow ups this year is to keep a positive mental outlook and don't dwell on the bad shot and instead focus on the opportunity to hit a nice recovery shot. That has helped me tremendously.

Also, course management....play away from trouble and sometimes play par 4s as 3 shot holes with the goal to get up and down or worst case scenario 2 putt for bogey. Sounds like the shot that killed you was the 9 iron approach, not the duff off the tee. Did you pull it or did you aim at the left side? If you're in scramble mode play conservative and try to hit middle of the green. No point in making a bad problem worse by pin hunting and getting a little offline and ending up in a bunker.

As for putting...switch to cross handed if you haven't already done so. I did it a few weeks ago and its been amazing how much my putting has improved.

If random orthopedists watched both of our swings...Im guessing 9 out of 10 would recommend you for treatment.

If you want a bit of humility this morning (Adam will need to look that up on dictionary.com), there is a 2 day junior event at Blackstone that started yesterday. Playing from the black/gold tees, the leader shot -5. And he's 18. 5 birdies, no bogies.

Juniors these days are sooooo good! Pretty awesome to see them progress.

When we played on Sunday we were paired up with a 16 year old from Racine who played in the event and also a 17 year old senior at Marengo HS. They couldn't have been more opposite. The kid from Racine literally didn't say 1 word to any us of from the first hole until the 18th green. Never picked up a pin, never putted out, hit his tee shot from wherever he wanted to whenever he wanted to, was practice putting while we were on the green and was pretty obnoxious overall. I had to ask him to stop a couple of times and he was literally putting sometimes across the line we were playing on.

The guy from Marengo was so incredibly nice, asked tons of questions, told a few stories of his own and was a great kid that was fun to watch play. He also threw out a nice little 69 with 6 birdies. He rarely hit driver but was mostly 3w off the tee. A sweet swing like BMan and also right handed but golfed left handed.

I'm heading to Indianapolis to play Brickyard Crossing tomorrow, and then on to Cincinnati and Columbus for a day of roller coasters at Kings Island, and 7 more rounds of golf. I'll hit Trophy Club or Harrison Hill on the way back hopefully. I'll post some reviews in a separate thread in the Midwest section.

I wish. 58 so far, and mid-60's by next week. I'll definitely break last year's high of 80, but 100 might be a stretch. It really depends on the weather this fall. For the past few years I've played into the first week of December, but last year it was early November.

I'll hit another milestone this trip, playing my 300th course.
