Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

Pine Meadow today. It was obviously really wet, but better than expected. I only had to move my ball out of standing water twice.

I've been having problems with my right foot for o while. I have a tailors bunion. I can play, but my foot swells like a catchers mitt. I've been to a few Dr's, and had a few cortisone shots (they're magic, but don't last long.) Tuesday I'm seeing a foot/ankle orthopedic surgeon. Today I wore special order Addiboost extra wide shoes. They're nice, but I have to admit I'm beyond a band-aid remedy.

Played Big Run yesterday. Weather was fantastic, 10 degrees warmer down there than in the city. Teed off at 10:45, it was 70 degrees by 11:30 and stayed that during the entire 5 hour baton death march of a round. Course was in fine shape, rough was seriously penal. Greens were actually a little quicker than usual out there. I screwed up and forgot to take my back meds before leaving the house and the back hurt all round, but I managed to scuffle my way to an unimpressive 89. Only hit 4 fairways all round, but had 7 pars which helped off set the 4 doubles and 1 triple I had. Played the par 3s at 1 over with 4 GIRs. Chipped really well on the day which saved me on the scorecard.

Got paired up with a random 4some of two cool guys and one old man who combined being the worst golfer I've ever seen with also having a 1 minute long pre shot routine and a minor case of the Kevin Na's. He was the sole reason our round took forever. I went there with the intention of playing the green tees, but the guys in my foursome wanted the whites so I didn't put up a fight. I should've, 6700 yards is too far for me, especially on a course that hard. Of course the old guy insisted on playing the whites as well despite barely making it past the ladies tees on most drives. I fault Big Run for this since they make no effort to get people to play the proper tees. It doesn't help that they call the green tees the senior tees. They should just call them the forward tees, remove some of the stigma from playing there.

Anyway, on the first hole my cart partner gets to his ball in the woods and there's a stick under his ball He tells me that if he moves it his ball will move. I laugh and tell him this isnt the PGA tour and if he wants to pick up his ball and throw it on the green and then tell he he had a birdie I'll write it on the scorecard without any hesitation.

By halfway through the round i was running out of of positive reinforcement for the guy after each bad shot. on 16 he duffed his tee shot about 30 yards. He put his next shot on the green, but a little bit above the hole. I said great shot and he said well, it went a little too far. I started laughing and was like, easy buddy, don't let the golf gods hear you talking like that.

Had one funny moment when earlier he put one in a fairway bunker filled with water. his ball was 50% submerged. We pull up and I say in a stern voice, "play it where it lies son!" Then I start messing on my phone, not paying attention, I look back and he's about to hit the ball out of the water/sand. i was like whoa whoa I was just joking, don't hit that, just pick it up and toss it out of there.

Overall, hoping to go back there to see if I can play better, will remember to take my meds next time. 9 fat shots yesterday, 14 on Friday. That's when I know the back isn't feeling well, having a hard time holding my posture and diving at the ball.

I slogged through the mess that some call the Joe Louis golf course this morning, but it was more like a construction area. The place was a mess, although the greens were in fairly decent shape, not that I hit that many. Being saturated, I was getting no roll whatsoever on my tee shots, and spent most of the day hitting hybrids and fairway woods into the greens. I managed 11 fairways, but only 6 greens. Once again, my scrambling made the day somewhat bearable. I donned full rain gear, a new ProQuip Aquastorm Pro set, but of course the rain didn't arrive until I was in the parking lot. Lol. I like this strategy, and may have to use it again. The PrQuip was much better than my old FootJoy Lightweights. Similar to Gore-tex, but half the price.

Overall, it was better than staying at home, but I do not recommend the course when it's wet. Heck, I wouldn't recommend it when it was dry, but it was cheap and close. There were few folks out today, and I walked the round in 2:45. My slowest round ever was at this course back in the early 80's. It was 103 degrees, and the round took 6 hours. After that round I threw my clubs in the garage, and didn't play another round for 15 years.

Big Run is a course that should not put the back tees out and move the 6700 yard tees up a good ways on the weekend. I love the course but I've had some brutally long Saturday afternoon golf there due to the difficulty of the course and people insisting on playing a course way too long for them.

I played 9 at Village Greens of Woodridge yesterday - course is a dog track but for the $12 twilight fee you can't really beat it, probably would have gotten 18 in if it wasn't mothers day weekend but I felt like I shouldn't spend more than a couple hours away on a weekend like this.

I had a opposite experience on Friday. Played in a tournament/outing at Ruffled Feathers. We played the green tees, which generally provide plenty of challenge, but are manageable for most semi-decent golfers. In their infinite wisdom, whoever setup the course, made it play right around 6000 yards. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with this, but when you hit driver LW on PAR 5 15th, it's little too much. Despite the short length, I played like crap (3 doubles) and shot 78. My cart partner had a decent day, shooting 72 and winning the whole thing. Oh well...

Saturday morning turned out well weatherwise at George Dunne. In the 60s until a breeze picked up and dropped in the 50s. I had my best ball striking round in years missing only 3 fairways and 4 greens. Of course, they didn't bother cutting the greens since early Thursday and they were fricken crap. That pissed me off.

Until next round. Bring it on!

I guess that depends too - outings are generally some of the biggest offenders for slow play. Outings and weekends 6600 is the longest I think any course should play. I gladly will play a shorter course if it means I'm not staring at the grass for most of my round. I know length isn't the biggest issue with slow play but it certainly helps if you force players to play the course shorter. Set it up short and give it middle of the green pins on the weekend...I guess it's probably easy for me to say since I have the ability to play during the week.

Played Straits and Irish on Friday...
We got really lucky with the weather in Sheboygan! Not a drop of rain until we started our trek home.
Straits was in really good shape. The greens were punched with the usual sand dressing and were on the slower side but it really wasn't an issue. They were punched but good enough to make putts.
The caddies were great, very knowledgable and plenty of bev cart / halfway house eye candy. :)
Started on the Straits at 9:30, sunny w-light winds. Played pretty well (lack of alcohol). +1 standing on the 14th tee...
Then I crapped the bed and ended up with a 79.
The Irish is another great course but I would have rather walked than take carts. It's cart path only on the Irish.
So a lot of walking was required.
I almost forgot to add...There were tornado like swarms of gnats everywhere! Nowhere to hide.

Good to hear The Straits is in good shape. I'll be playing there on June 20th, and can't wait!

That should be a great time. Play the appropriate tee's and have fun. That's what golf is suppose to be.
I will definitely be back up there in the middle of summer when everything is green and lush.

If I caddie for Lefty can I get in on the gaming?

Of course, I'm not sure where I'd put that seat.

Hey...not nice. I'm willing to carry your bag, put skin in the game because of my confidence in you and I get an up yours response?

One question...in all the times I've suggested to play a club or shot, have you ever been steered wrong? Can I take you back to December 13, 2014? You were going to hit 9 iron, I said wedge...and the tap in eagle was one of your few skin wins that day.

You didn't even need to Aimpoint that sucker.

Word on the street is that a certain WRX'er was in Lost Wages recently and met a dancer that had "gifts" that clearly were beyond nature. The dancer wanted to spend quality time together but this WRX'er lost focus when she shared that her professional name was Erin Hills.

Hmmm, did she have huge tracts of land, and several large mounds?
