While it's not my favorite course, Big Run is certainly worth a visit. Being family run, they've cut corners to the point where it's almost a circle. However, if you accept the fact that it's never going to be pristine, it's certainly playable. Like a lot of courses in the area, it has some great holes, some good holes, some not-so-good-holes, and some bad holes.

I don't think I've spent much, if any, time in the bar. Pace of play at BR is rather poor, and I'm loathe to drop any extra $$$ in a place after spending too much time on the course.

If someone like Jim McWethy (Mistwiod) purchased the property and spent couple million $$$ on it, you could easily have one of the best course in Chicagoland.

I think some basic TLC would be sufficient. It doesn't take $1 million to trim a few trees, groom bunkers, etc.

 

However, a full redo would be something. I may be mistaken, but BR likely has the greatest elevation changes in the Chicago area.

Basic TLC would be nice, but I'm talking about ripping out the crabgrass fairways and replacing them with bentgrass, redoing some of the green complexes - as they are, they can be un-puttable (11th?) if they are cut/rolled.

Honestly, that's one of the biggest reasons I don't play there as often as I like. As I become a fossil, I need to warm up before hitting a (tough) course. Most folks traveling from the city stop at Cog Hill's range to warm up, as it's only a few miles up Archer Ave. 'Still, it would be nice to have a range.

Lol. I read your statement as "I can walk the course". The first time I played BR my buddy told me to prepare myself, because it was long. Unfortunately, he didn't warn me about the severe elevation changes. I was sucking wind by the end of the round. It was the only time I ever walked the course.

Ah Big Run. Within the last 15 years they hosted a US Am qualifier. Take a moment and imagine walking that course....twice!!!! Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that.

 

A buddy of mine had a permanent time every Saturday.The real problem is it was one of their first times and he lived in Lincoln Park. On more than one occasion he would go out and then drive to BR straight from the bar because if he went home he'd never get there. Needless to say he is a masochist. Back in the day you could remove the governors on their carts, coupled with a couple of those hills made that pure craziness.

It's a toss up for me on Big Run or Dunne being my favorite course in the area. I would love to see the course get shut down for a year and made into something pristine but then again I like the fact I can go play out there in the evening with a decent rate and it's generally fairly empty.

I really like Big Run- if they made the greens fast it would be a total nightmare round on a busy day. Love the layout, the natural terrain sure makes for some awesome golf holes! There aren't too many courses in that area with elevation changes like that.

My guess is nothing will be in great shape, but by now they should all have had their grounds crew going for a few weeks so they should be ok. St. Andrews Saturday was very respectable considering it's only March.

I played BR only once, many years ago, but I remember it being better and more challenging than the average golf course. Better than Cog 1 & 3, I think.(?) I can still remember holes 1 (didn't like), 9 (liked) and 13 (liked). BR does manage to elicit strong reactions from people. When I ask a co-worker about BR, his face scrunches up... "HATE it!". I ask him about BR periodically, even though I already know the answer, just to see his reaction. And this comes from a guy who plays Gleneagles regularly.
