JONES ORIGINAL "modified"

Recommended Posts

Walk about 85% of time but I wanted a bag that did it all. Added a $15 abs sheet of plastic inside the Jones bag and now it's basically a free standing bag. Makes pulling clubs and putting them back way easier and it works perfect if you cart it.

1. 1/16" sheet of ABS plastic 24"x28" ( for Jones original)

2. Open large zipper pocket. Find the "hidden" thin zipper that unzips to open into the club compartment.

3. Roll up sheet of abs using 24" as width into as tight of a burrito as possible.

4. Cram it into the club compartment of bag through the hidden zipper opening. Arrange it so it lines up with plastic club divider on top.

5. Let it go and watch it expand.

6. You can also add tiny 3/8" stainless screws to bind the edges together but they are not needed. The plastic expanding is enough to keep it solid and not moving.

Why no pic of the plastic insert itself?

Where can you buy these plastic sheets? Is this available at Home Depot?

Great idea! Thanks for posting.

I had no idea that second zip even existed so well done for finding it. I had been toying with the idea of finding some sort of baton to hold the bag upright but your modification is much superior as it also makes it easier to get clubs in and out.

Now to source that piece of ABS !

Btw, is your model the one they call the Original Stripeshow ? Not seen the White version before .. Looks good!

Thanks! Yeah as far as I know it's their only all vinyl original. So it does have a bit more heft to the bag as it is. Haven't tried this set up on their nylon/vinyl combo so I'd be interested to see how it works and looks!

I think the all vinyl is a good idea. The nylon breaks down a little and "bobbles" in my experience where it rubs on your body when you carry it (I carry mine clubs forwards). I wonder how much extra weight the all vinyl comes in at ? Probably not much, and if it concerns, you can always take a club or two out anyway.

Still no UK dealers for these unfortunately ... I've been buying mine second hand in mint condition on US eBay (got two - one green and one black Original). Shipping usually about $50, but if I can pick the bag itself up for <$50 then I'm still getting a good deal.

These are terrific cary bags, and the strap is the best I have ever used. I pair mine with some hickory sticks (pic of them on here in the Mackenzie thread !)

I noticed the "bobbles" in my gray US Open bag, since I've been using it full time this year. Hopefully, the bag will not have holes in it soon.

Cheers!

Here is the same mod but with a Jones player series bag. They come with a "spine" but it's actually just 1 rod running top to bottom. Doesn't really do a whole lot in my opinion.

Unlike the original bag the player series doesn't have that hidden zipper to put the plastic sheet through to the inside. This is even easier.....

Use the same size sheet as the original, roll it up tight (takes some muscle), feed it through the larger of the two club dividers on top and it will expand inside the bag. That's it.

Adding an umbrella in the sheath of the original will help the stiffness a little bit, and you probably need to carry one in the summer anyway...

I just finished doing this to my bag.  I should note you can buy 1/16 24x48 from Walmart and cut it down, i accidentally bought this plastic and was able to cut it with scissors.  I could not find 24x28 easily.  I would also say if you can have help from someone else, ask them.  Maybe I had really strong plastic, or I need to actually go to the gym, but rolling the plastic, keeping it rolled, and finagling it into the bag was not easy.

How does it work? U like it? Does it stand by itself?

It gives the bag better shape for sure and because of that it’s easier to take clubs in and out.

My bag won’t stand by itself. If it didn’t have clubs in it, the bag would likely stand up straight.

It’s definitely a personal preference. The plastic was 20 bucks with shipping. I figure if I don’t like it after a month it’s easy to take out. Surely easier than getting it in there!
