Arizona Allergies

Kinda off topic but I'm curious if other people are dealing with allergies and how they've beat it in the past. This spring I've been suffering from horrible issues when out on the course/driving range/etc. A small amount of turf comes up and my eyes are watering, my nose is running and I'm sneezing like crazy.

 

Curious if any of you other golfers have had issues with this and what you've done to stop it. I've tried the random OTC allergy and sinus meds but nothing is really working. I'm looking to take the next step and do some type of heavy allergy screening and shots or whatever it takes to get it under control.

 

If you guys have any advice on things you've done or issues you've had, please share.

Yep, I know where you are coming from. Heavy wrap-around shades for the eyes help. I switched away from contacts because I couldn't make it through a round with them, so I had my doc create me some combination sunglasses/glasses. Wasn't cheap, but it helped a lot and they have lasted for a while now (eyes haven't changed). I also take a heavy dose of allergy meds, including a nasal spray which I use twice a day. Currently in the first year of allergy shots, and that seems to help a little now that I am further in. The other thing to do is ask about a prednisone script, but that is only for when things get bad. Apart from that, other people recommend a Neti Pot (or whatever it is called), but that doesn't do me any good. Some people swear by though, I just swear at it.

nasacort daily start with 2 sprays on each side at night, it may take 5 days to really start working if you are suffering really bad. Once your allergies calm down one spray is fine. As along as i take it every day my really bad fits of allergies have been way way lower this year. If I have a really bad fit or forget to take my nasacort 2 benadryl at night generally starts to clear me up while i get the nasacort back in my system. Zyrtec worked for a little bit but nothing has been as consistent for me as nasacort

The bad thing about nasacort is that it's a steroid, so prolonged use can cause thinning of the nasal walls as well adrenal gland issues.

My wife is a pharmacist and councils on this issue all day long lol

I moved here, never had allergies before.
Second year here, I was DYING in March & April. Got worse with each passing year.
Got allergy tested - turns out I am now allergic to EVERY GRASS IN AZ!!

I went to an allergist - Dr. Saavedra on 44th st just south of E. Camelback Rd.
He skin tested me, started me on rapid desensitization, and now (two years later) I am almost symptom free! A few sneezes here and there, but I feel so much better.

Only thing that works for me in actifed... generic is pretty cheap.

This year has been the worst year in history for allergies in Arizona they said on the news. My a** has been kicked by them all season, I have never had allergies this bad even back in Massachusetts.
