Callaway Supersoft and a very fast swingspeed

Been overspinning wedge shots with all of the premium balls. Had an 8-iron into a green yesterday that I thought I hit nearly perfectly. When I got to the green, my divot was 5 feet short of the pin and my ball was on the front fringe, 30 feet away. That was the last straw for me.

 

I will begin my first experiment using a "non-premium" ball. I've played every X-premium offering over the years. I've found that they all perform essentially the exact same for me, and although I have a preference, I wouldn't say that any of them are at all significantly better than their counterparts. So the experiment begins.

 

 

 

I greatly hesitate to go away from a premium ball. My driver ss is 120+ and when I have tinkered before, I've always lost significant distance. I decided to give the SuperSoft a go as it's advertised as high launch, low spin, and soft. I'm nervious that these characteristics won't survive my swing speed, and it will instead turn into a high launch, high spin balloon machine.

 

The reviews have been solid, I'll report my findings. I expect to lose some distance off of the driver, I just hope that it isn't paired with tons of sidespin.

Should be very straight off driver.The only issue for me was shots going too far inside 100 yds, especially half wedges and pitches. I never took time to adjust, but loved the feel.

Sounds like an e6 or velocity would suit you. Great feeling balls that just don't generate spin. I need spin, so I cannot move away from urethane....

what cover material do these 2 have? I got the "new and improved" SS, and the cover seems to be some kind of blend I'm unfamilar with (read it on the sleeve, can't remember off the top of my head)

Very brief update:

Got a dozen balls and took them to the course yesterday. As I was warming up, a huge storm front rolled in. I elected NOT to play the ball as I didn't think it would be a fair assessment in those conditions. I also wanted the predictable performance of the ball I've been using.

However, I did give the balls an extensive testing on the putting green and then later on my putting mat. I tested them against the B330, ProV1, and Z-StarX. The Supersoft was the best feeling ball I've ever putter with (with the exception possibly being a balata ball from back in the day). It just felt so nice off of the putter face. If it can perform from tee to green like some reviews have suggested, I'm sold. The putting feel has pretty much sold me already.

I used both an insert putter (very soft) and a solid steel putter (very firm). The Supersoft felt amazing off of both. A distinctive softness not found with any of the other balls I've mentioned.



I will hopefully report back soon after getting a full round in with them, but so far so good.

My SS is around 100. I have a very high ball flight regardless of what club. I played several dozen Callaway SS and Wilson Duo. I thought they played pretty well with driver, but I would tend to hit the "high balloon". I really liked the Chrome Soft over the SS.

All in all a very nice, soft feeling ball. The temperature was in the mid 90's, and in those conditions it felt way, way too soft.



Probably a ball I'd use in winter conditions. Impressive for a two-piece.

No balloons. Higher launch then what I was used to, but I didn't have any issues with over-spinning from the tee, which was nice.

My biggest gripe, oddly, was the soft feel that I liked on the putting mat. It felt too soft on the actually course. I usually play "X" premiums, so I'm sure that I could eventually get used to the difference, but it was a major difference.

I had very little trouble stopping the ball on the greens. Approach shots with a wedge launched higher and landed softer. Whatever spin I lost seemed to be mediated by that fact.



I like a firm premium ball, and that made the leap too great for me. But for a 2-piece, it was solid.
